by AmarnathReddy on Oct 22, 2003 10:57 AM  Permalink

Regarding lack of IITs..

we r need in need of more IITs .

We know that the knowledge of every person today bigger than yesterday..

and as well as the ultimate students survive the othere students thru IITs ..

The Cream of knowledge is sufficient in indians regarding to the subject what they don't have is no alternate pushup towards direction .

IIT

Exclusivity of IIT should be retained. In the past we have seen upsurge of various engg.colleges coming up but very few of them have proper standards.RITs aredoing good work but let them continue as next line of institutions .

Do we need more IITs?
by jitesh dhingra on Oct 22, 2003 09:57 AM  Permalink

this is a step which should not b welcomed coz quality of engineering students can only b maintained when lesser number of IIT colleges are available.

Govt must review the proposal......

New IIT
by Jaspreet on Oct 22, 2003 09:15 AM  Permalink

Yes creating new IITs will add to india's technological power, provided high standards are maintained. Given adequate resources and time i think any institute can establish itself comparable to IITs. It is a good initiative by the government.

No need for more iits
by B.V.S JAGADEESH on Oct 22, 2003 09:11 AM  Permalink

At the present situation and condition of the studies there is not much need for more IIT's. The government could not be able to provide proper placements for the present IITians and after more IIT's this problem may further be increased. Instead they can spend the same amount for upgrading or improving the quality of the education in some the reputed insititutions and also can improve the quality of primary and secondary education in the rural areas such that they too can avail the oppurtunity for higher education.
hope improving the number of iits may create a problem and further the quality of the present educaion in the iit's may go down. Also the government can try to improve the necessary infrastructure for the present.

Creation of IITs
by Krishnan V A on Oct 22, 2003 09:02 AM  Permalink

The move is to create more IITs is not a bad one as long as the bridge in facilities between the existing IITs and the new IITs is made up quickly. Afterall there are quite a few opportunities for competent engineers even now. With ideas like exchange programs and admitting international students through SAT, it will only add more credit to the institution.

However how long it will take for the new IITs to catch up with the old one leaves me uneasy

Definately!!
by Proteus on Oct 22, 2003 08:08 AM  Permalink

Having studied in an IIT, I know how easy it is to get in there. It's just a question of how much knowledge you have about a certain subject. This is the problem with IITs. I have also studied in other countries and the selection process, I should say, was a lot tougher than in the JEEs. The students at the IITs were not the top notch students of India, but people who just memorized a textbook full of crap!! I have seen really smart people not making it into to the IITs. Increasing the number may, hopefully, get those smart people in as well.

Do we need more IIT?
by Balaganesh on Oct 22, 2003 06:45 AM  Permalink

There is no point makeing REC's being converted into IIT's. There is tremendous scope for engineers of all divisions due to the booming economy, resulting in mushroom growth of self financing engineering colleges. So I suggest the government choses five new places, built infrastucture at a rapid pace and begin 5 more IIT's. We must have a vision for growth. Converting a already good college by just changing the name does not make sense to me.

IITs & RECs - What's the difference
by Sri on Oct 22, 2003 06:32 AM  Permalink

This is in response to some people's idea that RECs are not good-enough to be converted to IITs. That idea is completely wrong. Here is why:

- IITs are NOT famous for its teaching or facilities

(these are very low compared to most US univs.).

They are famous ONLY for the quality of its

B.Tech students (not M.Tech). Though this is

true, very few people admit this or agree with this.

Note: I know many people who did B.Tech in private

engineering colleges later did their

M.Tech and Phd's in IITs.

- Such bright undergraduate students can shine

in any environment (RECs, etc).

- I did by B.Tech in R.E.C Warangal. I have visited

4 IITs (Bombay, Madras, Kanpur & Delhi). I was

surprised to see that all these IITs are not that

big (facilities, labs, buldings, etc) compared

to REC Warangal. There is hardly any difference.

Some of the advanced labs present in RECW are

not present in some of the IITs. For example, I

really doubt that any of the IITs have the library

and adutorium as big as that of RECW.

You should go and see yourself.
