Agriculture and growth
by Anantha Krishnan on Jan 14, 2008 10:36 AM   Permalink | Hide replies

It is time Agriculture is also treated as a business and not as a cottage industry. It has the potential to be "profitable" provided we allow the market to be free and do not "subsidize" them.
The need is to organize farmers so that they can collectively produce, what they have to produce; be it food grains, pulses, etc. There is also need to "Educate" farmers on the various inputs that can be used to ensure that they have a bounty of a crop.

Excellent. This is exactly what is to be done if India is to feed its vast millions. The small holdings tilled by ignorant farmers are not the solution. Agriculture should be taken up by organised industry. Latest technology and machineries should be put to use. Better marketing and distributing skils are to be used. Co-opearative and collective farming where the farmers pool their small holdings to form larger areas for cultivation can also be tried. Government should integrate major rivers to ensure uninterrupted water supply. Instead of subsidized power uninterrupted and guaranteed power supply should be ensured by authorities.

The G7 nations too heavily subsudise the farm sector so i guess that needs to be done....but it is indeed surprising thatdespite having experts who are internationally regarded the Agri minister spends time sorting our issues regd. cricket rather than forming a think tank of these luminaries, giving them a carte blanche and sort out the mess....if Mr.kurian could do wonders with Anand why cant his help be sought for formulating ideas of copperative farming....
