Rio Olympics
by Venkatachalam on Aug 16, 2016 04:24 PM

What is so commendable about coming 10th that Rediff has applauded Lalitha. We want winners and not also ran. It is very clear that we are nowhere in Athletics and field events. There are a few good performers like Dipa, Lalitha and some Badminton stars. We are only good in one sport Cricket.

One of the problems with our athletes is that they seem to have a target to win fame and money and once it is achieved they tend to relax. Saina Nehwal is one such example.

saina is no 1 choker
by Dhantannan on Aug 16, 2016 01:28 PM  | Hide replies

she choked in beijing 2008,london 2012( but was gifted medal due to injury to chinese), choked in world championship and all england from winning position to carolia marin.
she can only put on weight, take selfies, do endorsements and win some useless superseries to make media happy.
she also insulted her previous guru gopichand.
sindhu is 100 times better and a big match player.

Even she was lobbying for Rajiv Khel ratna or arjun award. This Saina & Sonia Mirz. only takes pride of playing for personal milestone.

saina not only humiliated but also cheated and fooled us!
by Dhantannan on Aug 16, 2016 01:18 PM

media kept on saying gold from her since australian win.
why did dhe play if she was injured ?.
Due to injury to opponents she expects gifted medals(london 2012), but her own injury wants to use as an excuse for failure.
when first match was won she did not complain, but after loss highlighted it.
this is not acceptable.
she and coach must apologise.

MUST SUPPORT
by Shilpa Mehta on Aug 16, 2016 01:15 PM  | Hide replies

Saina could have won a medal if not injured .

And now we can still hope at least a bronze from Narsingh Yadav .

WE ALL MUST SUPPORT OUR PLAYERS , NO MATTER WHETHER THEY BRING MEDAL OR NOT .

REPRESENTING YOUR COUNTRY IN OLYMPICS & REACHING FINALS / SEMIFINALS , ITSELF IS NOT A SMALL ACHIEVEMENT - - -

Every sportsperson has to put lot of efforts to reach Olympic level .

One simple question to CRITICS - -

At least these players represented our country at Olympics level - - What these CRITICS did for our country ??
Does these critics represented even their city or town in any sporting event ?? Leave alone representing India , its a far off thing .

They only know one thing ie
' TO CRITICIZE ' NOTHING ELSE

The critics are tax payers. Who want accountability of their hard earned money.
The sportspersons are not doing anything for free, they are well paid.

True Olympic Spirit!
by Bwinde Kang on Aug 16, 2016 01:11 PM

Although the Olympic motto is the ‘hendiatris’ Citius, Altius, Fortius [Latin for "Faster, Higher, Stronger"] proposed by Pierre de Coubertin upon the creation of the International Olympic Committee in 1894, he had introduced a more informal but well known motto "The most important thing is not to win but to take part!" during the 1908 London Games. This is widely expected spirit of the Olympics. So much so when the Americans during Atlanta games riding on the wave of their supremacy had put up posters “There are only winners or tourists” it was derided as against the spirit of Olympics forcing them to retract. The Olympics is about excelling – being in competition with self rather than others. It may be difficult to appreciate such lofty ideals in modern-day materialistic society.

National Shame
by sandeep sharma on Aug 16, 2016 12:57 PM  | Hide replies

These days sports is not just sports. It is a medal war.
Being happy with participation is good excuse for small countries and not for India having population of 125 crore people.
All the coaches, trainers and ministers who went to Rio must be held responsible for this national shame.
If you can't win don't play, that's it.

Just our cricketers and a few others who have made us proud!
by sandeep kumar on Aug 16, 2016 12:57 PM  | Hide replies

The Olympic fiasco proved precisely why a billion of us celebrate our cricketers, who have brought consistent glory to our nation in the form of world cups, no 1 ranking, world records etc. The rest of them, with a few exceptions like Saina, Sania, Bhupathi, Dipa and Bindra, are nowhere near world standard. Look at someone like Paes. He plays politics all the time, turns up when he wants in Rio, came in the way of Bopanna Myneni partnership, and now says wants to set a new record in Tokyo playing as a 45 year old! Hope he is never selected again. And then the hockey players..they have their own league, lots of sponsors. Plus Tatas and Ambanis have pumped so much money into indian sport, but to what use? BCI is rich of course, but its the players desire and talent that makes them win matches. We need the killer instinct of a Virat in our sportsperson. Only then we can hope to retunr home with atleast a few medals. Lets stop pampering our sportspersons!

Before commenting on Paes know the facts.Did Sania,Bhupathi,Bopanna brought any medals to India in Olympics? or did they played won games as Paes did for India in Davis cup. It is easy to say Paes is playing politics. If uyou see actually it is Bhupati,Sania,Bopanna are doing groupism and playing politics with Paes and Indian tennis
