Boris Gelfand must have attained the status of the Challenger after he beat other Top Grandmasters in the matches for selection of the Challenger.
So technically Gelfand is better than Carlsen & Topolov.

hats off to you Mr. Anand ! You are a true champion. You are a true hero. Would a Bharat Ratna make any difference to your greatness? I don't think it will.Don't even eye for it and for a Rajya Sabha membership for that matter since these awards and rewards in this country, though great, are so much laced with political disease that you may end up getting contracted with same.

Issue with Bharat Ratna
by French Cuisine on May 31, 2012 11:22 AM  | Hide replies

People have started noticing now that Anand should be awarded a Bharat Ratna. Undoubtedly he is a prime candidate but people are missing the whole point. Where is the enthusiasm for chess in this country? People are just looking for - "oh he won, or oh we lost" kind of an attitude. Without garnering more enthusiasm for chess and taking a concerted effort to promote the game the whole point is lost. I am happy that Tamil Nadu tried to introduce the game in schools - but many parts of India have produced great talents. And yet when I go to the bookstore to pick up a book on chess there is none! Infact the recent bookstores are more or less scrapping all science sections in favor of businessManagement andPolitics. Everyone wantsAnMBA and all other intellectualPursuits are abandoned. Go toYour localCrosswords store - you will find not one book on chess. But if you are in the US - go to BarnesAndNobles and you will find at least fiftyBooks and ChessPuzzles.
So what is the whole point - a nationOf aBillion canProduce at most 10 worldClassIntellects. Hehehe - meraBharatMahan!

Oh, I never knew Bharat Ratna is given for `popularity' and not for achievements. The mad game of cricket is followed by the whole country, thanks to the media. So, even though it is a team game and unless the other 10 chip in the greatest could never have achieved what he did, he is recommended for Bharat Ratna, because he wins the `popularity' contest. Anand has won 5 world championships, achieved everything under the sun in Chess, which is played by more countries than cricket will ever be played, but he cannot be given Bharat Ratna, because he fails the `popularity' contest. Going by `popular' notion I think Rakhi Sawant will win any popularity contest hands down! May be she should be given Bharat Ratna! Why not?

I do not agree. India has so many grandmasters and IMs. Just becuase you do not find books in the stores and because media does not report chess, it does not mean that there is no enthuiasm. So many youngters play chess in India and we have a lot of talent in this country. Unfortunately, chess is not a physical game and cannot be shown on TV. That does not mean chess is not popular.Bharat Ratna to Anand, which he deserves more than any one else, will do a lot of good to Indian Chess.

AdmittedlyIndia has done anAdmirable job in developingChess - butThis is still a B or a C gradeJob. ManyCities in India have put up chessAcademies, which train youngsters, and some of whom go to becomeGMs. Chess is an intellectualAndIndividual endevour, so unless you make books and magazines available chess is never reallyPopularized. No matter how much you argue. Say you are a great student, but no matter how good yourRducation neverReaches you unless the booksAre available. Same is that withChess - Israeli newspapers coveredGelfand withExtensive gameAnalysis. Anand was mostly confined to backpages in TOI with hardly anyAnalysis. There was never a hooplaOver this great internationalContest with our icon featuring in it, of course compare it with what happened withIPL. Publish books on chess, publish magazines on chess and continue good work in the chessAcademies and then there is a promotingOfChess. In this marketDriven economy it is simply not the case. Anand probably deserves theRatna richly, but itWill notHelp is myPoint. It will largely still be an individual effort. Just like any other sport apart from cricket. The absence of anyKind ofPopular bookOnChess that is readily availableInStores says it allToMe.

China is now the no 1 chess team in Asia and closely compete with Russia for world title. In the recent China vs Russia match Chinese won. Just a few days ago the Asian meet was held and our GMs could not figure out theirs. India is a powerhouse, but comparing to CHina it is small. They are producing WGMs at an amazing rate - all top WGMs are Chinese. GMs are catching up. In the next century chess belongs to one country - China according to chessgames. In summary China has done a better job than India in grooming talent.

As for being cheap - even with your superstandardName you hardly have an argument. YourArgument is that China is extremelyPoor inChess - so thatImplies thatIndia shouldAlso doPoorly inPopularizing chess. You get negativeMarks for your joke.

Whatever Sania has done is with the limited facility that were there in India. She should be applaued for that, so also Vishy Anand. These sportsmen have done best with whatever they got in India. If they had born in the US etc., they would have got the best in the world, and if they had failed, then criticising them would have made some sense. In India only cricket is supported, because it has money, and money makes things move, while most of the students in other sports from young age, they put their own money for travel, food and stay during tournaments etc., So, let us appreciate their efforts, rather than pulling legs of people who have dared to be in different sports than cricket.

Chess is comparatively intellectual game whereas cricket is more of physical nature.

No doubt, he is indeed brilliant than cricketers..

However, for recognition from political and Indian mass for awards like Bharat Ratna, it is better he is from a BC or a Muslim..

If He were SRK or Kalam, our leaders and intellectual Indian public would have lined up in queue.. and compete with each other to greet him, demand for Bharata Ratna..

Whereas he is a Hindu and that too a Iyer Brahmin..
No wonder, no political leaders are quick enough to beat the Drums for Him...

Good that He settled in Europe.

Heartily Congratulations!!

Best wishes,
mahesh
