NOVAK IS ON A FEDERER LIKE RUN
by HUSSAIN MITHANI on Jun 09, 2012 11:34 AM  | Hide replies

Novak is on 27 match winning streak in a Grand Slam which ia now tied with who else but the legend Federer himself who has achieved this streak twice. But Federer ranks second in this streak which is surprising since most tennis records are dominated by Federer. Rod Laver is on top and if Novak wins the french open, he will rank second and ofcourse will become the first man since Laver to hold all four grandslam titles.
The big question is: Can He do a Novak Slam? if it was any other surface than red clay, my answer would be a definite "YES" but since Nadal is red clay court specialist only and with the ease of Nadal's draw and Novak struggling on red clay having more match time than Nadal, it will be very difficult for Novak to win. It is interesting to note that despite being the favorite to win the french open title every single time, Nadal has held the no.1 ranking while playing at the french open only twice in his career. He has been mostly relegated to the no.2 position. Federer dominated the No.1 spot for a long time and now its Novak's turn to dominate the no.1 ranking. Novak's domination in tennis is just like how federer has dominated early in his career. The competition has always been there, but Novak has risen above competition and made it look like there is no competition at all just like federer. Novak is trying the emulate the domination shown by federer and so far he is doing a pretty good job. Just how long he sustains it, only time will tell.

The hard court specialist Federer himself ran up record streaks against weak opposition between 2003-07, and always got easy draws that's why he ran up 16 slams. If it was any other period, there is no doubt he wouldn't be able to match the all court specialists like Novak and Nadal. Its interesting to note that whenever faced by Nadal in a GS,Federer has come up short. He is yet to beat Nadal in a non Wimbledon slam. Each defeat gets worse than the other, whatever the surface.Federer has now been permanently relegated to 3 and below.Agreed he provides token entertainment, and has loads of retarded fans like Michael Jackson had, waay past his sell by date......If Novak wins the French Open,he will do something the so called GOAT couldnt do despite being 5 years senior and playing in an era when there was no competition worth the name. Its not surprising he couldnt perform a calendar slam...after all,Nadal emerged to end his career effectively.

Hollowness of perceived greatness
by Mephistophilus on Jun 09, 2012 09:55 AM

Delpo is 39-3 against players outside top 10, Ferrer is 41-5 for the same which doesnt mean they are great.

Same goes to Fed in 03,2004,05 where he dominated players where none were great enough to be in top 10 in this years ranking. After the arrival of Nadal, Djoker and Murray Federer has settled to his level of 12-15 losses a year, which is not enough to rank him as the greatest.

For anyone who has followed Tennis for some years, it is evident that Federer is finished as a GS contender. Barring some miracles (injury to other players) Federer will never will another major.

I felt sorry watching the match only to turnoff after seeing Djoker playing with Federer and send him scurrying like a tired man and hitting winners at will. Such was the dominance of the younger player that even his ill executed drop shots werent fodder to Federer for winners.

After watching highlights of Delpo 2 sets against Fed, I am sure had Delpo maintained fitness Federer would have been history 2 days back.

Djokovic chasing History of holding ALL FOUR Majors Simultaniously.
This is considered as GREATEST Tennis achievment.
BUT, Federer holding FIVE Cosecutive WIMBLEDON and Again FIVE Consecutive U S Open IS actually Greatest.
Even though ALL FOUR Majors in ROW is very RARE,WE have VERTICAL FIVE in ROW done by Federer - Twice.
In short, Four- IN- ROW Concept should be seen from Vertical point of view and IT should be AT Par with Horizontal.
What Rod Laver and Don Budge have done is GREAT ,BUT NOT Greatest since it has Vertical-"FIVE IN ROW" as answer !!!!

Stop foaming from the mouth.Anyway, how many French-Wimbledon doubles has Federer done? That's the greatest achievement, and there he ranks a distant third behind Borg and Nadal.

The Semi-Finals score-true reflection
by mukesh shivdasani on Jun 09, 2012 09:35 AM  | Hide replies

Both Nadal and Djokovic showed just how far they are ahead of the others on a CLAY court.I was really surprised by the time each match took and frankly the loosers were never in a position where they looked like winning. Sure, Federer broke serve a few times but that may have been due to the fact that wind conditions made it difficult for anyone serving.Djo was way ahead in other aspects but that was expected.Roger is now moving into the last stages of his career and can't really be expected to come out on top on Clay. All of us saw how his single-handed backhand was a liability that was taken full advantage of.
And the finals..well this is going to be a 5 setter and I predict Nadal is going to win.Only because the crowd will be behind him.

Nadal and Djokovic are WAAAAY AHEAD of the rest of the pack on all surfaces.Any final of note in the last couple of years has been between them or had at least one of them.

Federer

When a person usually "Signs out",
he makes a "Gesture".

Greater the person,
the more magnanimous the Gesture.

When Federer beat Pete Sampras, in 2002,
Sampras, being a king,
I remember,
He hugged,
he congratulated,
he actually "Escorted" federer to his seat, after the match.

When Federer, in 2008,
was stunned by Nadal;

I remember, NO one would have played like that..

Swirl, swing, skill, backhands..

That Final set, was way beyond his age.

He ended his reign &

Leave being maganimous,
he did not even make a "Mature Gesture",

to herald the coming of a boy,who will end his reign.

So,There are reasons for prejudices against this man.

He's not, you know, sort of accomplished & contended soul.

Yes u r correct, He's not, sort of accomplished & contended soul. That's why he did that. He still have that fighting spirit to be come and be No # 1. If at all he doesn't reaches that feat; even after trying his level best he will definitely Show that so called "Mature Gesture" for the young talents, and i should say not just that mature gesture he will stand out of all the previously shown mature gesture to be remembered as the greatest of all.

GOAT FEDERER WILL BE BACK
by HUSSAIN MITHANI on Jun 09, 2012 06:01 AM  | Hide replies

you can't stop the greatest player of all time. He will come back. You can't expect him to win everything at this age like he used to. A younger federer would have clearly won the match. Federer was up a break in both sets. He just made too many errors. Novak is still struggling to find his form. He was broken so many times by federer in the match. If he does the same thing in the final, he will lose. This year so far has been quite successful for federer despite the age factor. He has four titles and stole the no.2 ranking from Nadal. That says quite alot about the legendary federer. He is not done yet. He is going to try to win as many titles as he can. He has done pretty well so far. GOAT Federer is the leader of grandslam titles and numerous records. The rest of the tennis players are just trying to follow the leader. Good luck in trying to catch up to the greatest player of all time, Roger Federer. It won't be easy since Roger Federer is not done yet. There are more surprises left in store when you talk about the legend and the GOAT Roger Federer.

There is no denying the fact that Federer is one of the greatest ever to have played Tennis and nobody is doubting his ability to come back. He did that last year against Novak. In fact even Nadal seems to have emerged stronger from last year. The way he is attacking and not just relying on his top spin is ample eveidence of that. Roger will have to find out a way to tackle these 2 relentlessly attacking and highly accurate hitting players. Else he will be relegated to No.3 position only for the next 1-2 years. Let us all hope that RF is able to do something more to his game.

Final
by anand pathak on Jun 09, 2012 03:18 AM  | Hide replies

The best two have reached the final. Nadal has the clear edge on the red clay.
I respect Federer that despite of having slowed down with time and age, he still manages to be in top three. Time will tell who all will have his longevity.
I hope the final is well contested.

It is clear that Nadal is a much improved player since last year whereas Novak has shown vulnerability. Like you, I too think that Nadal will put up a much greater fight this time and match will be well contested, even though Novak has prevailed over nadal quite a few times in the last 1 year. I couldn't wait for Sunday to come.

I think it will be a no match, and Nadal will win easily.Federer leads yesterday's match in 33-27 winners, where as he also leads in unforced errors 46-17, that is why he lost, Nadal won't do that, and will win for sure.
