Instead of punishing guilty, government protecting Dow Chemical officials who are responsible for this massacre. One more failure.

you just showed your ignorance. stay in school a little longer son. The people who were responsible for Bhopal disaster are long gone, and Union Carbide exists no more. If you guys have a problem then it should be with the gov's acceptance of the settlement amt and its distribution to the affected people.

BOYCOTT THE OLYMPICS
by bukkaraya krishna on Feb 16, 2012 04:49 PM

Does this present Indian Government under the leadership of Mr.Manmohan Singh has enough courage to take a decision of boycotting the Olympic games, I think no, because these coward government does not have guts to take a decision for increasing Oil prices before elections (be it state or central)then how can they take such a big decision on boycotting the olympics. I feel sorry for the victims of Bhopal and feel pity about the sorry statehood of our government for which we ourselves are responsible and to be blamed.

to boycott or not bocott
by Joydeep Ghosh on Feb 16, 2012 04:40 PM

The day Dow Chemical aquired Union Carbide it automatically became liable to penalties imposed on Union Carbide. Those who say Dow Chemical is not responsible should first pay a visit to areas around Bhopal where where generations have been affected.

As for India boycotting Olympics it doesnot make difference as Indian sportsman dont have a significant chance to win anything.

Congress and typical Indian chalta hai attitude caused tragedy.

Equipment and safety regulations
Union Carbide MIC plant

In 1998, during civil action suits in India, it emerged that the plant was not prepared for problems. No action plans had been established to cope with incidents of this magnitude. This included not informing local authorities of the quantities or dangers of chemicals used and manufactured at Bhopal.[5][6][14][21]

The MIC tank alarms had not worked for four years.[5][6][14][26]
There was only one manual back-up system, compared to a four-stage system used in the United States.[5][6][14][26]
The flare tower and several vent gas scrubbers had been out of service for five months before the disaster. Only one gas scrubber was operating: it could not treat such a large amount of MIC with sodium hydroxide (caustic soda), which would have brought the concentration down to a safe level.[26] The flare tower could only handle a quarter of the gas that leaked in 1984, and moreover it was out of order at the time of the incident.[5][6][14][27]
To reduce energy costs, the refrigeration system was idle. The MIC was kept at 20 degrees Celsius, not the 4.5 degrees advised by the manual.[5][6][14][26]
The steam boiler, intended to clean the pipes, was out of action for unknown reasons.[5][6][14][26]
Slip-blind plates that would have prevented water from pipes being cleaned from leaking into the MIC tanks through faulty valves were not installed. Their installation had been omitted from the cleaning checklist.[5

Indian govt. let Anderson go. Tragedy happened in Bhopal.
by V S on Feb 16, 2012 04:33 PM

All the security guards and managers were Indian. Chalta hai attitude caused tragedy.

Factors leading to the magnitude of the gas leak include:

Storing MIC in large tanks and filling beyond recommended levels
Poor maintenance after the plant ceased MIC production at the end of 1984
Failure of several safety systems (due to poor maintenance)
Safety systems being switched off to save money—including the MIC tank refrigeration system which could have mitigated the disaster severity

The problem was made worse by the mushrooming of slums in the vicinity of the plant, non-existent catastrophe plans, and shortcomings in health care and socio-economic rehabilitation.[5][6][20]

cong not DOW is the culprit
by veerapuram dharan on Feb 16, 2012 04:12 PM

some two years back, when the tragedy was brought to the notice of the media, there was clear evidence to implicate rajiv in this case..NDTV reported the excerpts of arjun singh giving interview to DD channel that he had no intention to prosecute any one in this case..it was clear that warren anderson was let go scott free in a govt. vehicle upto the airport..

instead of going behind DOW, we should ensure sonia and co own up the responsibility..

mms when asked about anti sikh riots, he merely said it shouldnt have happened.

when rahul was asked about the last mumbai blasts, he said only 10% died and if it were in any other country, more number would have died..

and we all will easily forget and forgive them..

same way, we will forgive DOW too..

by D goel on Feb 16, 2012 04:11 PM

D. Goel pkl. afternoon 4.10pm, Thursday, Fwebruary ,16, 2012.
Well, Mr Rogge's doing some expatiation, for the indefensible deeds of Dow's collaboration with his Organising Committee for july London Olympics .
Wein India are appalled by thiskind of softpedalling of the horrendous crime of Union Carbid in 1994 whose dehumanising effects still maim thousands of Indian Citizens in Bhopal.Besides theEnviromental damagesthatoverdecades this Lethal chemicals has done to ecology of the region.Dow'stiming andcuplability isfior theminutiae of dates etc, that Indian judiciary also hasnotbeen able to giveany satisfactory Solution. Mr Rogge'sdefence appars to me vey disappointing and inimical of Olympic Spirit - Human Brotherhood, to say the least. D. Goel

national shame
by veerapuram dharan on Feb 16, 2012 03:50 PM

when hundreds died and equal number paralysed, its not a national concern..but if italian mafia queen is treated for cancer, then the common man should show concern and the media highlights it accordingly..
