If we donot consider gold/silver/bronze classification,as per the total medal count,India stands at 35th position among 204 participant olympic committees.
If our boxers were not deprived of 2-3 more medals, our standing would have been even better.Joydeep missed the medal by a whisker_! Kashyap,Poonia,Gowda,Jwala,Ashwini,Irfan,Devendro,Vikas..all of them did well.India got a medal in badminton ! India improved in Bx,Wr,Sh ,BM and Atheletics.
For a country where 42% population still leaves below the poverty line and very low human development index, this achievement is encouraging & hope this will give some sense to our government to invest more on sports and health.
British PM had said his people"get rid of bollywood dance, and concentrate on sports" ! When shall our PM says"Get rid of british colonial lazy cricket, concentrate on olympic sports" ?
Mao_Zedong had said that cricket is like opium and it will destroy all other sports and he had banned cricket in China.Today China has 38 gold medals in 2012 olympics.I think,it will need another 50 years for us to reach that level.
Except few third world countries,no nations gives any value to cricket. So,let us develop our people in other sports

Why can we have good sportsmen in both type of games i.e. cricket and the games part of Olympics.
Cricket is popular as wins come to India's kitty quite often, the same will happen to other sports when people will come to know that you can earn popularity, respect and good money once you win a medal at a big platform like Olympics.

First we congratulate our medal winners. We cannot compare with the developed countries. We have population more than any country in the world. There are lots of talents in hidden areas. Have to find and train them. I dont know how many of olympians had pure merit. If we nurture the real talents (without any pressure from money and politics) we will be in top 10.
It seems Indian contingent flag bearer Sushil Kumar was hiding the elusive gold medal and it seems it will surface on the final day of olympic. What a finish for India in London olympics..way to go !
Beijing 2008 3 medals London 2012 6 medals Rio 2016 12 medals
India is making 100% improvement every olympic, that is 25% improvement every year.

If there is a sincere effort from Govt side, it can grow more than 100% by 2016! Yes, it will be the great moment to get an individual gold on the final day!

Yeah - the media is already touting this as a big success and truly the medal tally doubled. My reading of the whole thing is that India came back with at least 3 medals short (boxing, archery and shooting), but anyway even 9 is not good enough for a country of this size.
Apart from Saina Nehawal none of the medal winners are that young where they can carry on till the next Olympics. Apart from Davendro in boxing and Kumar in wrestling none of the really young seemed capable of matching the world's best.
For me the most important is the time you peak. There are only a few real medal hopes for India and they should peak at the right time. Most Indian sportsmen were simply incapable of doing that. THis will be our best haul for at least the next two Olympics, and unless there is a lot more money in sports due to economic growth Olympics medals are not going to come.
I will remember London 2012 for two reasons - Saina against China, Yogeswar Dutt's mesmerizing bouts for bronze and of course Sushil Kumar.
HATS OFF to you sir for such a stupendous performance without loosing hope and winning 5 bouts in a day.Your deed should and would be written in Golden Letters in indian Sporting History. For me you Bronze medal is not in any way inferior to a Gold.Humble salutations.
Re: what is grappler???

These are commonly used alternatives. Grappler = wrestler, Pugilist = boxer, Cager = Basket baller, Paddler = TT player, wood pusher = Chess player ...

On second thoughts, can't you improve your English vocabulary rather than asking others to stoop to your level? Learn to give credit where its due. Instead of red herring issues, at least congratulate the grappler on his medal.
I think wrestling is a very demanding sport which needs so much amount of psychical strength and endurance and to beat the last opponent with such convincing fashion speaks volume of his talent. I strted watching wrestling after Sushil's feat in last olympic and I think it is such a eye catching sport...beautiful to watch good wrestling. I have seen Alexander Karelin (The Legend) in Greco Roman but watching Indian Wrestlers winning in such a fashion is awesome !!

Look at the brighter side. For the first time India will have total equal medal count of 5-6 with countries such as South Africa,Turkey,Norway,Switzerland,Mexico,Sweden,Argentina,Ireland, etc.
From Asia, only China,Japan,South Korea ,North Korea and Kazakhstan got higher medal than India...
