Dehydration cost Sushil the Gold medal
by Ganesh R on Aug 12, 2012 10:18 PM  | Hide replies

Sushil was totally exhausted and dehydrated just before the Final wrestling bout in the 66kg Men's event.

After the Semifinal and the hardfought 3 bouts he was very tired and drained. He had given his ALL and fought brave like a LION to enter the Final and ensure India a Silver or Gold in this Olympics which would be surely much better than his achievement of Bronze in last Olympics. He was determined to surpass his own benchmark and do well for himself and his INDIA. Sadly his physical condition got the better of him in the FINAL.Not only the physical tiredness and mental tiredness, he had also vomitted 2 times before entering the Final for the bout. That made him fully dehydrated and weak.

Don't forget that Sushil had fought 9 Full PERIODs , 3 each in his 3 bouts prior to reaching the FINAL whereas the Japanese wrestler who fought him in the final had made it to the Final by winning in just 7 periods (in his 3 earlier bouts). So Japanese was more fresher and less tired than Sushil when entering the FINAL. Also Japanese didnt have any health issue like dehydration etc. So Japanese was lucky to easily win in 2 rounds. Had Sushil not vomitted due to the food he ate or whatever reason it was, the Japanese would have had to fight really hard to beat him and who knows the match would have gone to 3 Periods and the Hero of Najafgarh who had eliminated 2008 Gold medallist in his very first round here in 2012 would have even gone on to thrash the Japanese and bag Gold.
