Hockey is no more a DRIBBLERS' Game
by Ujwala Kulkarni on Aug 12, 2012 08:41 PM  | Hide replies

Gone are the days when hockey used to be a dribblers' game. It's eons since that happened. Contemporary hockey like any other sport requires agility, speed, stamina, physical fitness and reflexes. Moreover, penalty corners need to be converted. When will Indians realize this? They only seem to go through the motions.

Incidentally, it's erroneous to say that Indian hockey is dead. IT'S DECAYING.

Ujwala I totally agree with you. I was infact screaming in front of the TV and my dad was calming me down. I was going \"Appa Enna Pa...summa Dribble pannitay irrukaga\" (its in Tamil and it means \'Why are they not passing the ball (first time release) .. why simply dribbling the ball and showing individual heroics\'. Even in Afro Asian Games in my city Hyderabad I saw these guys just dribbling the ball and not quickly passing and getting on with the fast astro turf game like the Western countries do in modern hockey. Luckily we won GOLD there. But why dribble so much ? Does each player want to show off his dribbling skills ? Even DD commentator was screaming off his lungs in Hindi \"Samajh may nahi aatha Bharath kay khilaadi gendh ko jaldi \'Release\' kyun nahi karthay \'D\' may aanay kay baadh bhi ? Sirf ek do second miltha hay \'D\' may (because there are so many defenders and man to man marking) and Why our Indians keep wanting to go individually all the way and score goal themselves ? If they don\'t release within the 2-3 seconds the opposition team (however weak they maybe.. even South Africa for that matter) would easily poke their stick and snatch away the ball and Indians miss out on the opportunity.

Why the coach doesn\'t tell the boys about all this ? Is there a language problem. Is it because he cant speak Hindi and is not Indian, the Indian boys won\'t connect better with him ?

Infrastructure - Makes a difference
by vilastadoori on Aug 12, 2012 08:07 PM  | Hide replies

Dear Indian Hockey Federation,
I reside in andhra pradesh - hyderabad and 35 years old. Very keen follower of hockey and cricket since my childhood seen indian hockey going down to dumps. Last year I have been to a trip in europe - netherlands to be precise and my job was to travel through the country. What I have seen was really awesome, there have been small hamlets and even in small hamlets we have seen small hockey grounds laid in turfs and school kids from the age of 5 with hockey sticks and proper hockey attire play hockey on those artificial synthetic turfs and you can see the results when they play for their country after 20 years. If we dream of gold in olympics we need to invest money, we do not lack in human population every small district headquarters shuld have an olympic school sponserd by the central govt directly build hockey stadiums with synthetic layout and tap the village power give them basic education and infrastructure get in world class physio's put them in condition camps the elimination should happen at taht level not after qualifying for olympics....
continue the same for 20 years and we are sure we will challenge USA and China( Lets forget pakistan/bangladesh/srilanka/mynmar and other places for a moment we have won 6 medals and pakistan none...lets not complete in SAARC lets compete at the Asian and world level that is where we belong.) ....even north korea won 4 golds....and we are way too advanced than north korea ..Vilas

All sports are killed in India
by John Kulandai on Aug 12, 2012 07:44 PM

So, the cricket fans will now be happy. There will be more fans for the Cricket now, since Hockey is gone! I have nothing against cricket, but am against the monopoly of the media hype for any particular game. In a country of 1.2 billian people, there is immemnse opportunity for a lot of sport activity and we could compete any country in the world, if only we could stop the monopoly of one particular sport and promote all sports and games. What a sad picture at the end of the Olympics for a great country! Just 6 medals, when even small countries have more.... What is wrong with us?

Arm chair ex player critics

Indian hockey went into a decline when astro turf was first introduced at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. The country had won the World Cup the previous year on grass, now slipped to 5th position. The thing is what were people like Leslie Claudius doing then ? They were holding positions of some importance in the hockey hierarchy then. Why did they not launch a movement to get astro turf pitches introduced all over the country ? These guys, after retirement, have just gone after cushy sinecures and done nothing more than make statements trying to show how good they were then, and how bad players are now. They are the root cause for the decline of Indian Hockey. Not the players, not the boards.

Demise of Indian Hockey
by Sceptic Critic on Aug 12, 2012 06:50 PM  | Hide replies

Mr. Claudius is absolutely correct in declaring that Indian hockey is dead. It can never be resuscitated as long as we have corrupt politicians, corrupt hockey organization, and lazy people all over.
So India should stop sending hockey teams to the Olympics or World Championships from now on.

Sceptic and Claudius....What happened in year 2008 ? We didn't qualify at all for the Olympics. Was it not dead that time itself ? When it qualified this time (an improvement to atleast play 6 matches in Olympic Games), you are calling it dead ? Strange people of India. You don't even have a name.. you call yourself Sceptic Critic .. hmmm...

I'm a sceptic and a critic. I state only the truth. Of course truth is hurtful for people like you. Tough luck. Indian hockey has been dead for quite a while, at least two decades. Claudius brought it to people's attention only now.
