Skill is more important than height
by Indranil Chowdhury on Jan 11, 2011 02:10 PM

The average height of the Australian team is more than Spain - so why is Spain World Champion? These guys not only lack physical strength but also the necessary skills. I saw the match and they could not put together more than 3 passes in the midfield. The midfield is the most important in this battle and it is not basketball. Among the eleven - the two center backs played okay but lost the aerial battle. The full backs Deepak Mondal and Surkumar(I think) are incompetent. The Ozs had a free hand in the wings. Climax and Nabi cannot hold the midfield play. An European school team can pass better than that. And Dias was miserable - not one of those stupid long balls found its man. Chetri ran a lot but was bundled off the ball like a rat by their tall defender. So why cannot a professional soccer team pass the ball and players movement off it? First the ball and then the anything else. This is my favorite sport and I feel ashamed. Seriously I cannot bear this pain. Unless things improve we will have to wait for 24 more years the next time in Asia Cup. Honestly, I have given up on Indian football.

We trail in FootBall because by "World Cup" we understand 9 Nations and Direct entry, No qualifying required....
We are familier with 9 Nation "World Cup" Theory...
BUT when it comes to 155 Nations.....we realise we are 2 year old toddler in sporting world....and then what follows is Just "pee "

We trail due to poor strategy applied by the foreign coach. Can you imagine Deepak Mondal in Left Back position, where as he plays in stopper in club football! Why Bhutia is in squad?

Be glad they weren't playing Spain or Germany -- the score would have been 10-0.

I remember PSV Eindhoven touring India about 15 years back. first game they beat us 9-0. next game...we scored the first Goal. I.M Vijayan was the scorer. The gallery was in extasy. but then they scored 10 goals; 10-1 :(

Yes, that is the point. Its not about the height. Its about stamina and dedication, which is lacking. There is hardly any support from Government, which is busy eating money.

Indians only fit to play Cricket coz there is less competition
by Prasad Damodaran on Jan 11, 2011 12:54 PM  | Hide replies

Indians, Pakistanis, Bengladeshis, Srilankans etc. are only fit to play the lazy game of Cricket coz first of all not much stamina and strength is required to play this game and there is very less competition involved in Cricket as compared to Football where each small nation is vying for a place in the Game. Once the giants like Germany, Italy, France etc. starts playing the game, these people will be pushed up and South Asians will go down.

hey nobel,
Just try sprinting 100 meters 5-6 times in 15 minutes.
Cricket is played only where English people ruled . Football is 90 minutes of pure thrill just as last few overs of 20- 20 or 50 over match.

Boss, are you trying to say that cricket requires no stamina. Try playing for 6 hours of cricket and then you would see the difference.

Whether cricket is played in 1 country or 2 countries is not argument. The fact is it is a beautiful game of not purely strength, but also of skill and has produced greats. India has sachin and anyone would go t watch him or sehwag for eg. In sharp contrast indian football has a long way to go. I live in kolkata where football is a passion, and the footballers are paid well by the clubs and are sent to watch world cups. Still there are no improvements. It is pure lack of attitude and skill.

India has just not focussed on soccer
by Gopal on Jan 11, 2011 12:50 PM

"It's not that India is not a sporting nation. See the Commonwealth Games: they beat everyone in cricket and ruled the world in field hockey. I think they just have not concentrated on soccer"
???? - these two sports are not ones where height plays a major advantage..in field hockey, no one lifts the ball above the ground and in cricket, most of the top batsmen have all been ones who have been shorter by sportsmen standards e.g. Bradman, Gavaskar, Lara, Ponting, Sachin..
