Rafa's knees are baffling: he appears not to have had an operation - we haven't been told he has and photographs don't reveal apparent operation scars. He doesn't wear knee supports or even the wraps designed to alleviate tendonitis, and his on-court movement shows no diminution. He is incredibly fast and able to sustain prolonged high-intensity effort. He hasn't taken an extended period of rest to help his knees recover - if he has tendonitis this should be a period of several months. He never appears to limp. Yet he complains of constant pain and says he receives treatment that includes "injections" - of what we don't really know.

Why are you worried about Nadal's knees? You may suffer tendonitis in the finger after typing so many absurd messages.

reason for nadal's 2009 performance ...

Rafa was at it again in Paris on Friday complaining that when he was in his bath at home in Madrid on his day off his mother had to shout up to say the testers were calling. Wasn't it awful? How shocking.
Excuse me, that’s exactly when RANDOM drug testers are meant to call.
And his good friends David Ferrer and Fernando Verdaso were tested at 6am the other morning apparently. Terrible. "It's crazy," complains Rafa. "I don't know if, from a legal point of view, this is correct. That is, to know where you are every single moment of your life, and to account for this. This is what I think.
"I don't think this is a right thing to do. It's wrong. It's a high price to pay to practice your sport, to play tennis.
Absolutely wrong, Rafa. That is precisely the price you have to pay to ensure your sport is as clean as possible. It is the price Cycling and Athletics has been paying through clenched teeth for years and getting maligned for it. Why is tennis not prepared to pay this price? The sport lends itself well to possible drug misuse and there are persistent reports in the Spanish press that some very big name tennis players were uncovered in the Operation Puerto exercise a few years back which exposed a number of cyclists allegedly involved in blood doping.

Tennis is partly an endurance sport reliant on an athlete’s ability to keep going for 3-4 hours most days, a multi-million pound business when top competitors can not "afford" to be off the court too long with injuries. It has a drug use profile even though we like to think it is clean.
And on the subject of counting the cost, I wouldn't pursue that too far Rafa either. You earned over €1,000 a minute last year winning the French Open, Carlos Sastre barely topped €90 a minute for winning the Tour de France.
Others are paying a bigger cost.
"I want tennis to be as clean as possible, of course," continues Rafa. "This is crystal clear. But there's room for manoeuvring. You see, there's a certain type of leeway."
Wrong again, Rafa. Absolutely 100 per cent wrong. There can be no leeway. You want to compete in the Olympics, then you should be subject to exactly the same random testing regimes as other Olympians.
Bite the bullet and get on with your marvellous, thrilling tennis, Rafa. You are one of the ultimate professionals and one of the world's most rewarded sportsmen. It can be the pits having to get out of your bath to compete a random drug testing but, actually, it ain’t so very bad compared with the lot of billions of people on this planet.

The funny thing with Nadal is that, every time you think it could not get weirder, it does.

We had the mysterious knee injuries and the mysterious treatments (laser at the USO 2007, PRP before RG 2010à.

We had the wild variations in muscle mass and his 2009 slump.

And now just when you think you've seen it all, suddenly Nadal drops at the US Open equipped with the most formidable serve, he who according to uncle Toni had no serve to speak of when he came on the Tour in 2003. Right now, Nadal has better stats on serve than peak Sampras in three of his victorious US Open runs (93, 95, 96) and he serves faster than Federer.

Obviously this Nadal is a talented, hard-working fellow :-). Although it requires probably more talent for the tennis commentators to keep a straight face when gushing about Nadal's extraordinary improvements.

You may not like someone, but that does not mean you will alledge with dope and other things. I am not a Fed fan, still like him play great tennis. Fed is great when he plays against others except Nadal.

Rafa can do it
by kieran dsouza on Sep 12, 2010 01:52 PM

He is the most consistent player so far not dropping a single set. Federer was lucky to lose to Djokovic otherwise he would have been thrashed by Nadal in the final.

Anyway, this should be an interesting final!!
