Smita,do you know anything beyond cricket? Lazy Indians have identified themselves with lazy cricket. Cricket is one of the least popular games in the world.ICC tried to popularise it,but failed.T-20 is the latest gimmick. This will also fail. Football is the most popular game in the world. There is no comparison of football with cricket.Cricket will remain in India,if not elsewhere, even after 100 years.Indians are not capable of playing the vigorous, demanding game of football properly.Maybe due to the frailer physical structure. Hence Indians are stuck with lazy games like cricket which is the garbage left by the British, when they left India.

FYI india was very good in football and played in SEMIFINAL in olympic in the year 1954. after 1954 due to dirty politics in football association of india, indian football graph is started downfalling, currently india is on 132 position. there are many others countries behind india, but they all are very small and undeveloped countries, out of most we have not heard even name also.
Dear all, you are all forgetting one big factor :Where its being played !! Its in South Africa, totally different weather conditions. We indians always forget this. We did same when our cricket team went West Indies as favorites, we forgot it was played in West Indies. Same here. I feel France, Brazil, Argentina and Spain will be toughest with one dark horse..Ivory Coast.
When will we start giving importance to football in our country we need to start building grass root football well i use to represent my school in the mssa championship and then college.speaking from exp i know te facilities are so bad and the grounds r not maintained.Football is a universal sport and played in over 120 countries and we are the second most populated country in the world i am sure if proper training and facilities are provided in wil be up there in top 50 in 5 yrs time.Govt to start investing in football rather than spending money on cricket where cricketers only pla for money( ads )

wrong... it was in the 1952 Olympics .. which is far inferior to the worldcup .. and that too because they got a "bye" in a previous round

I am quoting from an article of Daily Pioneer written by Dina Nath Mishra: "It may be recalled in 1950 the Indian football team qualified for the world cup in Brazil. But the country did not have enough foreign exchange to send the team there. And thereafter India never qualified again. In the Olympic of 1952 our barefoot team bravely fought and carved out a place on international level. In the Melbourne Olympic of 1956 the Indian team with boots finished fourth. In those days India used to be one of the Asian super powers in football." Then India clinched the second position in Asian Cup 1964. According to Mr. Mishra, India did not participate in 1950 World Cup Football (held in Brazil) because of monetary problem. On the other hand, according to BBC, " India pulled out because Fifa would not let them play in bare feet." Thus, you can see that opinions are divided about India's not taking part in World Cup 1950.
