silly argument
by sunil nair on Mar 12, 2010 07:48 PM

A S Khan was a great player so it is sad to see him make such stupid comments . If FIH hadn't stepped in, Indian hockey would still be run as the personal feifdom of a few beaurocrats .The reason for our diminishing fortunes is easy enough to see . Modern hockey is played on Astroturf which provides a fast and even surface . It was made standard to avoid the vagaries of a turf surface where the ball would roll awkwardly . This decreased the dependence on dribbling skills and put more emphasis on physical fitness . Naturally India where from childhood hockey players are taught only dribbling suffered and the more physically fit Europeans started beating us . However this could have been solved if Indian coaches had adjusted their methods to suit the new style . We don't have to forget dribbling but we can restrict that to moves within the D and concentrate on our fitness and develop quick passing . This is not impossible , Korea adapted very well from a purely Asian style to a mixed style and were quite successful . A foreign coach is invaluable now as he can help in these adjustments . Most Indian coaches still have this old world tendency to look only for dribbling skills in youngsters . As a result India has always had great dribblers who would never reach the D while our opponents would score off quick counter attacks and setpieces . I can only hope the new office bearers whoever they are have some vision .

No problem with foreign coach
by YOGESH SHARMA on Mar 12, 2010 06:05 PM

Freinds I think we shouldn't have problem with foreign coaches because the game has totaly changed today. We have to think forward and bring some latest fresh ideas and trends also otherwise we cann't match the needs of present days hockey. I think brasa has done a resonable job. Moreover a foregner can be less interested in our ineer politics of the game. He can be more foccused and less influenced in his working. He has done marginally good and he should be given some more time to show his wotrth. At the same time for our past players we should have full respect and there should be some committes of our past players to look after the progress of our game.

Best is to accept poor std of our team
by Titus Godwin on Mar 12, 2010 05:27 PM  | Hide replies

Today hockey is played in much faster pace which our team is unable to match and with this limitation no one can't do much better. Fact is that hockey is modified to suit Western teams at the cost of Asian teams. Now, we have to build from here on by encouraging the team. Simply humilating our best players is not going to help us in any way. We have to wait and work hard to develope a good side which can win matches consistently. Yes... foreign coaches should be welcomed as the bring lot of experience of present day Hockey. OK..... I didn't mean to dump our old hockey champs but we can't close our eyes to the way the world play hockey.

But Gary Kirsten is successful! Hockey is different in that the nature of the game has totally changed. We need some good penalty corner experts alongwith experts who can help in trapping and imagination...

So what''s the real problem
by Sun on Mar 12, 2010 05:12 PM

Seats...seats...free tickets etc. In hockey now in IPL etc.Nobody is worried about the standard of the game or of the players. Its just about the free ticket or if its given whether its a good one.

Basic Requirement
by promod parihari on Mar 12, 2010 05:11 PM

First of all we need a strong Federation in india who can handle the problem of the players. In the same time we need good sponsor for betterment of hockey in india. Further now a days we need money for our staybility and the hockey federation should look carefully on the concern matter. If the Federation can arrange atleast 3 to 4 hockey tournament including best team of the world then we can learn or we can show better hockey.

There is no question of changing coach. If A.S.Khan will be the coach he may handle the same problem

Hockey
by Mangesh Chavan on Mar 12, 2010 04:58 PM

Hockey is one of the most streanous group field sport requiring tremendous stamina, power and skill all rolled in to one body and one team. There is no moment to relax in hockey as in cricket and football. As such the a solid foundation in the 21st century can only be built around the super-nutritioning of the players of atleast three runks.

As for administration the Babus (Administrators) and the netas are too used to building their riches at the cost of those they pledge to serve. But how to chemotherapize these Bad cells that continue to pollute the blood and spoil the body.
