Khan''s comments on the coach
by SR Hari on Mar 12, 2010 03:42 PM

It is sad that an old player had comented on the coach of the team despite India doing the best in the last 15 years in the WC. The Spaniard had spent few months only with the team and making them to be in top-8 is better than what we all expected (10,11 or 12) after the issues that plagued Indian Hockey 2-3 months before the WC.

Ask Mr Khan (he used to be my favorite dusring his playing days) to ensure the game is administered well, at the top, rather than criticizing the coach, just because he happens to be a foreigner. Indian coaches can only understand the mentality of the Indian players. The need of the hour is to adapt to the fast paced game in which the Europeans and the Ozs are excelling right now. Mr. Khan should fight to get better infrastructure for the game to improve. Leave the coach Mr. Khan.

i think brasa did fine job in coaching. We may not win but have given good fight to opponents and played some good hockey in parts. he should be given more time atleast two years to see the better result. i am sure brasa will everything to fulfill our expectation.

Aslam Sher Khan is one of the finest hockey players India has produced. His contribution in winning 1975 WC was priceless and he has always given his 101% in all matches he played. But, he will have to understand and accept the changes that world hockey has undergone in the last 30 years. We can not keep playing the hockey we used to play on grass for emotional reasons and still expect our team to win World Cup and major championships.

Khan's comments on Brasa are unnecessary. It was a very late decision by Hockey India to bring a caoch like Brasa who has the ability to bring the changes overdue for decades and make Indian team a modern hockey team om polygrass. Then only we can expect good results from our team.

Dhanraj Pillai is more sensible among the hockey stalwarts in India and understands the need better.

Hockey in doldrums
by Keerthivasan on Mar 12, 2010 03:12 PM

State of indian hockey is aptly judged by the level of intelligence exhibited by a stalwart like Aslam Sher Khan. No doubt a great player in his hey days but hockey is more about intelligence than skill only.
Obviously the coach who has put his head on the chopping block needs to have a say in the team selection! this is something which even a school boy will agree. But our famous hockey players who consider it a snub not to have been considered for coaching always have once conspiracy theory or the other.
Coach brasa has done a good job and it showed in glimpses. He needs time and we should be patient with him. Please remember India is about to have its best world cup finish after more than 15 years...

I can't believe that a hockey lover will write in such irresponsible manner. We do have problems and most of them are administrative. I agree with the problems at FIH as thanks to people like Mr. KPS Gill that our hockey is in such shambles. We have had Indian coaches but let's face it, they are not capable of coaching the team on current formats. We have not had any great performance for decades so not sure which "number of stalwarts" Mr. Khan is referring too. If we had some in last couple of decades, we should have been better placed in the sport.

Coach has an important role to play in Captain selection as it impacts team moral. The management that runs hockey (or any sport for that matter) in this country has not clue of the sport so they MUST NOT be allowed to pick the captain. Its a shame that these people are allowed to pick the team. 7 or 8 finish is better than what Mr. Khan's "number of stalwarts" could achieve in many many years.

Comments on Brasa is uncalled for before Brasa and charlesworth it was only indian coaches but have they achieved,it is shame that we have brought have national game to this stage,We have seen in the world cup eventhough India did not make it to the cut atleast we played and commended some repect on our approach and Iam sure with Brasa at the helm we can see a bright future but we have to be patient since the damage is huge.

The standard of coaching in country is abisymal & most Indian coacheds lacks the understanding of modern hockey.Barsa has done a good job for the team & should be retained. The other side of story has a long history of feudalistic approach in running the show from the days of Ashwini Kumar who was a corrupt polic official followed by an insane cop known as KPS.

STOP THIS NONSENSE

I appeal to all former indian hockeys players to stop saying that we have tons and tons of home made coaches. These home grown coaches are no good in today's hockey. This is not 1960's when india dominated. Today we need to adapt to european style of hockey, fast, physical with lots of tactical stretegies.

Deepak,
You are absolutely right. These old guys live in a bygone era and the changes now are too mucch for them to handle. Brasa has done an excellent job in a very short span of 7 months. The trapping is better and they coordinated well. With some more years we can get good results.

Brasa has actually done a good job and the Indians have shown a marked improvement. we need to remember that while we were basking in the glory of the past, the others have taken giant strides in the game and Aslam Sher khan needs to speak less like a congress politician and accept that Brasa is the best thing to have happened.

brasa has shown that Indian Hockey tean can compete with the best in the world..I can't think any former players who wud raise to this level in short tym. Unless you attack U can't win games..meanwhile Defence shud also b given due importance. If we continue to grow like this, we can cement a Top-5 finish in any Intl Tournament

I completely agree and am rallying behind Jose Brasa..!!!

Finally who's the coach is not as important as winning the games and reclaiming the lost glory is.

Let Brasa be the building block in the Glorious Hockey Team. I reckon bringing in new blood should be tried more often and sprucing up the bench strength.
