Brasa's suggestion on the need and type of change is spot on and needs to be done immediately.
In hockey it is very easy for good teams to concede goals if you are not consistently sharp.

Our Hockey team
by Lakshmikanthan Venkatraman on Mar 03, 2010 03:34 PM

Our team hasimproved a lot, but need to be trimmed. They missed a penalty corner, and gave a goal like a cake. Surely it would have been copetetive if our players have bit of a planning and coordination. In the first half, the ball was near the Australian goal keepermost of the time which shows our players were putting sufficient pressure on the Aussies. Well done India.

they have taken tutions from BCCI and Indian Cricketers and also from Indian Cricket Public... Whenever India looses,, it is the umpires fault, the pitch is to be blammed, other team cheated and won.. what u say Mr. Siphah...

BCCI should Intervene
by Sreedhar Sreedhar on Mar 03, 2010 11:25 AM  | Hide replies

It was gross injustice to award 2 match ban to Shivendra by FIH. It has to be noted that an Australian national has awarded this inspite of no evidence.

BCCI should intervene and deal with this situation similar to 'Monkey episode'. Rather BCCI should tell FHI to declare India as the winner otherwise, they would take over HI and start Hockey Premier League.

The day HI starts controlling World hockey like BCCI does for cricket, these kind of racial partialities will stop happening.

Hockey India must now join hands with BCCI to work out a strategy to tame FIH over this issue.

No. Australia is world number 2 side. Only Holland, Spain and Gaermany can be compare to Aus. Newzealand is ordinary side. England is improving from last 1 year.

Bulshit Basara. Our team is no match to other teams except pakistan. We may loose to all other teams in the world cup. Media is the main cause for indian defeat.

Aussies were too quick
by iota on Mar 03, 2010 11:14 AM  | Hide replies

Some observations from the game:

1. Aussies were too quick for indians.
2. Indians seemed tired.
3. Aussies attacked from the word go.
4. Aussies passed the ball around much better, even long passes were very good.
5. Indians totally failed to position themselves in Aussie D circle when there was an opportunity. Ball would be passed, but no indian player to take advantage of it. This was surprising.
6. Indians did not make serious attempts to get Penalty Corners, by playing inside Aussie D Circle.

But there is a positive side to it; Last minute penalty stroke evaded by Aldrine was excellent. Otherwise it's true that better stopping & passing were required; particularly while entering D circle they were seemed too shattered & as told by Prabhojot Singh man to man marking was not totally complete. But the confidence is very high that they can do it. So best of luck to them.

I do not agree that Indian team did not play well. The two return goals inspite of heavy pressure were really impressive. Indian team did fight well, but Australian took early advantange and maintained it. The way Australians put their blood and sweat after their defeat by England, any team would had met the sane fate as India did.

The absence Shivendra was really felt in the forward line. But Rajpal, Ranjan Pillay did well. Sandeep Singh disappointed in the defense line and Penalty corner. He was the weakest link for India.

Indian Hockey needs victories
by abdul nazeer on Mar 03, 2010 11:09 AM  | Hide replies

To make hockey re-emerge in India is to win matches, many people in India might be knowing that we beat pakistan, its a good advertisement for indian hockey, what more can we need by beating pakistan. But consistency and more victories will pull the sponsors into the game and we will have more hockey series like cricket. This will improve the game of hockey and improve the number of new talents liking this game.

We cannot match the physical fitness of aussies or westerners, but we can specialise our playing more and also be fast in our approach like the chinese and japanese. We need to be more aggresive and fast in our game. If we can reach semis in this world cup, it can pull more sponsors and we have a new begining to this wonderful sport.

The victories can bring the sponsers but I would like to put one thing there should be policy from govt .like as for any nationalise or world approved event there should be a comman economical packages at different stages or national level for the events or games so , as to promot & add interest in games.except cricket .

Only winnability is not sufficient. India won Asia Cup in 2003 and 2007 very convincingly, but it did not work.

Even in cricket, Indian cricket is a first round exiter in big tournaments. Maybe its WC 2007, ICC CT 2005,2009, T20 WC, Team India crashed in the first round. But cricket is popular as there is a match every third day in a bi-lateral series which is actually fixed.

There is a need for the Hockey administrators to work out an International hockey calendar to be played in India throughout the year. Reviving PHL will a good thing to start with.

Hockey died in 1975 - Obscene rules need a change!
by Talisman on Mar 03, 2010 11:02 AM  | Hide replies

I watched the Aussie players run from one end to the other without putting stick to the ball and get into the circle and push the ball into the opponent's legs to get a penalty corner.

If the FIH thinks this is hockey, I have got news for you. I think the current rules ignore spectators. I dont want to see some guy running like heck. I want to see players put stick to the ball.

Yes. Thats how they succeed.

First they killed Hockey with Astro Turf and then with terribly long passes, enter the D of the opponent and get a penalty corner and hit hard.

The real hockey was killed in 1975, immediately after India became World Champions.

Why Cannot do the same. Just blaming turf and other excuses?
It is Indian politics who made India cry in Hockey. It look like Only Pnjab is representing the whole Hockey. That is reason we are so behind.Partiality and politics is the down fall of Hockey.

No, we are only talking about the hockey the artistic game that India and Pakistan used to play, has been killed.

But its 28 years since hockey world cup was played on grass and every team should had mastered on artificial turf, because this is life.

The fact is that hockey administrators completely ignored hockey in India. The neighbors Pak had no problem adapting with Astro Turf and they continued to give good performance. So, India can not escape with an excuse here.

Guys, we have to take introduction of astro-turf into consideration because both India & Pakistan were adversly affected by this change because of their playing styles. For around two decades after its introduction, it had been a downward slide for both the countries. People lost interest in hockey and so did the sponcers. At the highest level of any sport, you need brains to understand the game as every thing has become so scientefic. Thus, what we have today is probably not the best of the lot as we could have had! If Indian hockey has to regain its lost glory then IHF with the support of Government has to come up with some lucerative plan that could attract the best of talent. Once that is done we can then think of providing the best of equipments and infrastructure along with professional trainers to these lads. May be then we may hope to see a podium finish in World Cups.
