Argentina faces Mexico in the first knockout round, the same team which it faced in 2006 World Cup in the first knockout round.
Also if both Argentina and Germany win their first knockout round matches, they play each other in the quarter finals. Same thing happened in 2006 World Cup.

Maradona was supremely gifted as a player. I'm not sure if his protege' Lionel Messi can be as consistent as pocket dynamo Maradona was.

whatever the outcome the match to watch..I think England is the weaker side compared to Germans, but you can never say...may be England will be just lucky..
Dont forget he was drug addict and certainly not a role model. He was great footballer but certainly not a role model. Please donot get emotional about him. Look at Sachin Tendulkar. He is great cricketer and excellent role model.

My dear Ravichandran, Ferrari ( which he received as a GIFT had a cost price of around Rs 1 crore ( Is the figure correct ??? ) If I gave you a gift of a Ferrari, for your outstanding comments on this discussion board, would you pay the excise duty of Rs 1 crore ( 100 % of cost of car ) and receive the gift or would you ask for exemption of duty ??? Tell me....Be.. in his shoes... After all , do you have the feeling that he DOES NOT deserve to have been excempted from duty for a Gift, which He did not ask for ???
Re: Re: Re: Maradona is not a role model
by Ravichandran on Jun 24, 2010 11:10 AM
why in first place to ask for. 1) he should have declined the price (being a human being won't), 2)you had every means to pay the duty

Dont use that to stop the acclaim that he is the greatest ever. All humans are not perfects and all have some flaws. He was once and now no more. But do u know the story how he become one...it was in Italy in late 1980s when some clubs in Napoli with mafia help jealous of his fame and skills turned him into a addict. they fed him with drugs and ruined him.

there's no doubt about Sachin's abilities, but he is a one eyed king in a kingdom of blind people. cricket is played religiously by only 8 countries in th world and still he could not get the world cup. Soccer is played world wide and 32 countries are in this world cup alone. Maradona gave world cup to Argentina but sachin could not. Sachin declined for WADA tests which all other sports person has to go through. This clealry shows that there's indeed fishy about the Indian cricket players which includes Sachin too.
Re: Re: Maradona is not a role model
by mohan on Jun 24, 2010 11:18 AM
nonsense, pardon me. sachin is playing from when he was 16, for India. He's cleanest.
first line of argument is okay, about World Cup, 8 countries vs 32 etc. Maradona almost repeated his WC feat, he got Argentina into finals in the second final after his first win.

Sachin is a role model, and there is no doubt about it. But as human beings we are bound to make mistakes. That doesn't or rather shouldn't take away anything that we've achieved. Maradona is ready to everything back to the game which earned him the name ,fame ang everything he posses. This is the ultimate thing which matters. HATS OFF TO DIEGO.

I think , the passion with Maradona loves football is second to none. He has fought so many battles in his personal n professional career. N now media , he has shown how a man with grit can make mockery of media , which is now a days only reduced to marketing gimmick no matter what happens, esp. in our country , where Media is hype.
For GOD sake learn something from him instead of criticizing him.
Argentina will go down in quarters as they have put too much effort in preliminary rounds & opened the tactics too soon. in the next rounds all other teams will be vary of Argentine tactics & have remedies for it.

yep ! after the 4-0 hammering they gave Aus, they went into ICU and just came out. Hope they'll hang on tight. Their path to final is very very tough as they got a tough draw. From this point on they will meet top and serious contenders in every match.

Also don't forget that he came directly from slums. He worked very hard and struggled a lot to rehabilitate himself whenever he was stuck with his problems. His countrymen have forgiven his negative points and have drawn inspiration from his football and what he accomplished for Argentina.
Re: Quite a remarkable personality

Not one of the greatest, but the greatest ever for all times in the history of the game.
U can look up YOU TUNE and make out. Look at the 2nd goal he scored ah England in 1986 World Cup. The greatest goal of all times, magical stuff
Re: Re: Quite a remarkable personality

His closest contest is with Pele, the black pearl. Maradona excels with his one-foot dribble and play and Pele excelled all-round and also scored more goals.
Re: Re: Re: Quite a remarkable personality
by JAKE on Jun 24, 2010 11:00 AM
Pele was stats wise the best ever, but not a complete all round player and entertainer. Maradona was one and the hysteria he created is unmatched to date.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Quite a remarkable personality
by mohan on Jun 24, 2010 11:13 AM
Maradona cannot be a complete player. He scores goals off only one foot. A complete entertainer no doubt, but Pele wasn't less. I've seen a full-length movie of Pele's games and goals and they are deadly. For that matter, checkout Klinnsmann's goals or Zidane's goals etc. They are terrific too. I'll not fall for the label of 'greatest' yet.
Re: Quite a remarkable personality

Maradona said he will sweep the streets of Buenos Aires if Argentina wins the cup this year - that's how bad he wants the team to win.
What's wrong with it ?? Are everyone jealous of Maradona ?? If you cannot be like Maradona , Why groan & moan about it ??? In fact, I think, if ALL the cameras in the stadium, FOCUSSED only on Maradona & not on the players, - WE will still be able to follow the game thoroughly !!!
