guys please think liberally

have u ever heard about "the hand of god" in football folklore where diego maradona netted a goal using his "hands" quite "intentionally" and argentina won the game 2-1 , that is "cheating"

coz he wasnt penalised for deliberately handling the ball instead his team won the match

suarez didnt cheat any 1
u can argue that he might have been unsportive but he got his punishment a red card sentoff which is the maximum punishment rule laid down by FIFA itself

and suggestions like life ban etc cannot be incorporated for handballs

what about the goals which are actually scored and not awarded

are the referees and umpires penalised for that ????
are they banned for life ????
what action is taken against them

and who knows whether they didnt "cheat" or they didnt make a mistake "intentionally" or "partially"

u can call it whatever u want but its better luck to Ghana next time

i must say he was quite smart putting his hand out, reminded me of suicide bombers, ready to get red card but winning wont be easy against us. Well done.

Absurd
by Sudden Lee on Jul 05, 2010 02:39 PM  | Hide replies

This whole argument of everyone stopping the balls with their hands is absurd. If that was so, a lot of ppl would have already done it. FAce it, what other option did Suarez have? And how was he to know that Gyan would miss the penalty? He knew that by sticking up his hand, he ould get a red card but since it was the dying moments of the game, he didn't hesitate. It would have been cheating if there weren't any consequences but there were. And it is Ghana's fault they didn't conevrt!

Its pathetic to see people trying to justify Suarez's action. They say that since he knows and suffered the consequences, its ok. Thats just like saying that its ok to sexually abuse and violate others so long as you know the consequences and suffer the same.

dude sexually abusing , homicide are criminal activities

handling a football is not a criminal offence
even in cricket if a batsman handles the ball he is given out

suarez got what he deserved
a red card and a penalty kick to ghana
these are the rules of the game
made by FIFA itself and why not ban umpires and referees for incorrect decisions
who knows they might do it partially and intentionally

better luck next time for ghanaians
they werent just good enough

What a stupid correlation! Talk sports, dude. What should he have done? Watch the ball go right in? There are various degrees of doing something wrong. Equating sexual assault and a deliberate handballonly exposes your lack of intelligence. Id you want to debate, at least remain on the same tangent.

Rule should be there to award goals directly
by HIMANSHU SINGH on Jul 05, 2010 12:51 PM  | Hide replies

In this case, the ball was ont eh goal line and there was no one else between the ball and net. hence it was clear goal that was prevented by Suarez. Ideally either this should have been given a goal or there shuold be a new way of awarding Penalties i.e. without evne a GK in front of the goal. for fouls inside the penlaty are normal penalty Kick should be there, but for clear prevention of goals i.e. where the ball is heading goalwards and there are no defenders to prevent it, it should be given a goal.

Cheating
by kaushik sonowal on Jul 05, 2010 10:37 AM  | Hide replies

First of all Luis Suarez cheated and for that he was called hero by his country fellows. He didnt feel guilty about it and this is how he gave example to his country and the youngsters and the cheat code in extra time for future use by other players.Fifa should learn from this world cup and make some changes in the book of rules. They should also introduce video refering for critical decisions like offsides, denial of goals, foals etc.

Then foot ball will become a sport like golf or five day test match. The video referal system has affected the flow of the hockey in the recent world cup held in India. Do you want the same thing to happen in foot ball. Instead I suggest, video refereeing should be there and he can reject or accept any goal only if its done with hands or the ball bouncing back after crossing the goal line. The flow of the game should not be stopped and the score alone has to be changed according to the decision.

Even a 1 goal make a difference between losing and winning. So FIFA should minimise as much errors as they can.

NO LBW kind of rule in football..
by Rajesh Shetty on Jul 05, 2010 10:35 AM  | Hide replies

In cricket we all know there is an LBW rule. And this rule is a bit ambiguous bcos there is no way of knowing even using Hawk-eye whether a ball is going to hit the stumps or not. But all other conditions being met, if the umpire thinks so, then he is given out. Sometimes wrongfully too. Now that is the rule of the game. Now in soccer there is not such thing as HBG...hand before the goal..!! There is only a penalty kick, if it takes place inside the D. So u cant say they cheated. They just stretched things to give them a semblance of a chance. And it clicked. One can say its a comedy of errors..A cricketer is not banned for deliberate padding, he is only given LBW if the ball is going to hit the stumps in the opinion of the umpire. So same with football here..

In this very unhappy incident, all 11 players (in fact a whole team representing a nation and not just one cricketer) were thrown/dumped out of the football world cup because of deliberate handball. This is not sensible in terms of 'FAIR PLAY'!!! The said player could have used his head or chest or shoulder considering the height to stop the ball from entering the nets but instead chose his hands to stop the jabulani on the goal line in the dying seconds to prevent a certain goaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal and cheated way to victory...... In very very very critical situation (such as this one) the player should be given life ban by FIFA after ascertaining and re-ascertaining the magnitude of blunder/offense and this could perhaps be a lethal warning/lesson for the players who cheat their way to victories. Banning just one game for deliberate cheating (such as this grave one) is a cruel joke!!! Now this is called comedy of errors!!!

deserved
by stryker on Jul 05, 2010 10:01 AM  | Hide replies

there is no rule in place right now
regarding handling the ball "intentionally" apart from the player being sent off

Ghana are the ones who didnt deserve to go through to the next round , Gyan missed the penalty its his fault ,they couldnt win the penalty shootout its Ghana team's fault their problem

suarez handled the ball and was sent off
he got what he deserved

ghana got what they deserved and

uruguay got what they deserved - a place in WC semis

if FIFA thinks "suarez" and uruguay "cheated" better change the rules "next" time .

no need to create a controversy of that incident now

better look at refereeing blunders where goals are not awarded even when the ball crosses the fuking line
lampard's goal not "awarded" is a shinning example

If that so, from now on everybody will try to stop the ball with their hands if it is heading for the net. So they will have a chance with the penalty strike.

That'll be a bad idea because its a red card offence. For Suarez it made sense because it was done at the last minute of extra time. So his red card doesnt hurt the team except for that they'll miss him in the penalty shootouts. It wont make sense for everybody to try to stop the ball using hands everytime the ball is coming towards the nets.

100 percent right. We have seen many 'cheat goals' off the hand unlike this one in which he deliberately tried to stop the ball. And he paid the price for it. And one could argue in hindsight that had the Ghana striker been good enough to beat everyone's attempt to stop the ball ( by hand or head or foot ) then they would have got a goal and the whole discussion would not have taken place. So everyone here paid the price for what they did and for what they did not.

Referee standard is at its worst
by Rajendra Punekar on Jul 05, 2010 09:40 AM

Ghana should have been in. Kaka should have beed awarded penalty in first half, referee was biased towards Netherlands. Bommel was bulldozing anybody and everybody still no action. To me he should have been sent of thrice in the match.

hello..there is something wrong with u. Irrespective of other umpiring errors, there was nothing he could have done in this particular case. And what is the yardstick that a particular ball would have gone into the goal if he had not blocked it. Do u mean to say that for any handball(deliberate or not ) a goal should be given ? The beauty of this whole thing is the amazing result that it has brought. One has to go by the rules. And the rules say its a foul for a deliberate handball, punishable by a a red card and a penalty. Rules are rule and one has to go by the rule book and not emotions. One could argue that the Ghana striker was not no good enough to put it across without being obstucted by any Uruguay player, hand or no hand...!

even if its a deliberate handball a penalty can only be given if the handball is committed in the D area else just a free kick is awarded apart from the player being sent off

I think more than a handball, it is hard tackles that are more unsporting in football. But even for that all u get is a free kick/penalty and a red card, not a gift goal...u have to hit the goal urself in football...by hook or crook..

Rajesh,
In this case it was noticeable that the ball was just going to cross the goalline. This argument does not go well with me that the Ghana Striker was not good enough. There is no place for cheating in sport no matter what the decision later on. The way you are stating it will soon become acceptable to commit a blatant foul on the opposing team's star player or get him booked through some wonderful play acting. This is cheating .. End of discussion ..
The ball was going in .. The uruguay player does not deserve to ever play international football. We watch football as it is a beautiful game not a manipulated one ..

Fine..agreed. Now this heated discussion is taking place bcos it happened in the last minute. Throughout the 90 mins in every match we see numerous fouls, hard physical tackes, some that result in not only obstructing goal-runs, but also severe injuries for life. How clean is that..? Why dont u think that is cheating ? In that case we will have 22 cheats in every game. You can call Suarez's unsporting, but not a cheat. Something like Chapells underarm ball...but at least that was planned cheating..not an impuslive decision. But they changed the rules of cricket for that right..? Let FIFA change its rules, so that a free gift goal is given for such stops. Also let FIFA give free gift goals instead of free kicks/penalties for tackles ..since u want the beautiful non-manipulated game..
