why will current government go against most popular indian sportsman. there should be some reason. I didn't know that he hold spanish passport till today. government has rights to get clarification from him. give some more time. media need some spicy news for rating.

Give government some more time. you are all judging before know the truth. you are the same people demand everyone should treat equal irrespective of power, position and status.

That is the problem with people like you. YOu need to follow your advice and read up before commenting.

Anand had faxed his Indian passport to the HRD ministry 8 months ago, and he was invited to the ceremony in Hyderabad, and visited Hyderabad for the ceremony and to play the chess games.

Just before the ceremony he realized that the organizers couldnt give the degree for which he was invited because as usual HRD ministry was sleeping over this passport that was faxed. since they slept over it, and did not give permission to the unviersity till the last minute, this controversy arose.

The same HRD ministry never questioned his citizendhip while awarding him Khel RAtna. Or when awarding foreigners Bharat Ratna.

Honorary degrees are routinely offered to foreigners by INdian and foregin universities. Why the HRD ministry has to get into such trivial matters as if some national secret is being taken away, is beyond common sense.

In all likelihood, Kapil Sibal may not even be aware of some low level babu in HrD ministry even asking for the citizenship proof which is not required to begin with. If anything Sibal must be embarassed about his episode. Which is why Indian ministers need to trim this bearuacracy and focus on things that re needed. For example building schools in villages, instead of checking if Anand has citizenship or not. Even if he doesnt go ahead and give the honorary degree (whci is of no use to anyone anyway). Build schools Sibal. and keep shut.

Anand is the undisputed king of chess. He has been the most brilliant player in the history of the game. Through his sheer effort he has crossed the narrow confines of geographical divisions and he is a citizen of the earth. He has won on every continent and every country imaginable.

"live in india serve your country here"

LOL...so a chess champion should not stay whre the world chess circuit, players, strategists live, but he should come back and live in India, away from where the other chess wizard live and practise? When our archers go to europe and practice with the best there, should we ask them to come and stay in the villages of india and practice with our tribals instead?

"Serve your country here". Next, are you going to tell Indian Navy ships exercising with foreign navies to come back and only serve their country here in India?

I live in the US. Why is it the Americans are not so touchy about where their champions live, who they marry, they respect and treausre their champions.

I can guarantee that such a controversy would never happen in the US because they respect their heroes.
