Magic of America and his parents
by indianindi on Jan 10, 2009 09:41 AM  | Hide replies

This is another great example of America's greatness. It is land of equality and people are gven priority based on their talents and skills. Not by nationality, religion, caste, language or sex. US identifies and recognizes talent and because of that it is a great country. As long as indians elect the kind of politicians who kill engineers for not 'donating' money for birthday parties and let their world cup boxing medalists take taxis on their own money to reach home from airport we should never take pride for the kid being indian. Instead we should feel ashamed for not grooming such talents in india and let others to find our talents. Somdev is a talented individual and lets hail him and wish him success.

NRI, OCI ?!?
by Ravi on Jan 10, 2009 02:55 AM  | Hide replies

Its a pity that petty politicians decide Guys like somadewverman , Ashok amritraj, cannot represent India because they are NRI's!
I very well understand preference should be given to lacal guys if there is brek even. But sadly India has no much international standard male single tennis players. Blame it on infrastructure for sports in India or sportpersons being poor.So I think it should be left to the individual, in case of multi national citizenship, as to which country he represents. Unfortunately hook or crook politicians would see to it that indian flag will not fly high although individuals do try that.

Teh govt decison to not allow non Indian passport holders to represent India is correct. These so called sportsmen want the US lifestyle but want to use India to get to Olympics and other important events. Indian constituion does not allow mulitple citizenship. So there is no question of anyone being both an Indian as well as a US citizen.... To clear matters, NRIs are Indian passport holders, but living outside India for more than 6 months in a year. They can represent india.
Btw, I am glad the Somdevdevarman does not fall in the same category.

Your jst another person who is fooled by the govt. nd especially by the indian sports ministrys' claim to object PIO's nd OCI's.

Sports min. havin a policy in accordance to the rules nd regulations of citizenship is fine nd all tht, as its the sports min. nd sports federation to decide whthr to allow or not allow an foreign athlete based on whtever decision or policy thy come up with.

Bt deporting an athlete based on performances whtr dull or good is purely the decision taken by the coach of indian tennis team. Its defnitly nt the job of sports min. nd govt. to interfere in that.

Wht the sports min. did ws judge the players intentions wrongly by bringing up rubbish non-evidence fact tht foreign players ar "using" india to get to sporting events. This is the dumbest statment made the indian sports min. nd this explains why the system of indian sports is weak. Worse is you actually believe that(lol)

Wht ur saying is also hypocritical as you uphold the govt. rules nd also u judge the players intentions as basis fr objecting them frm playin fr india.

Either indian sports min. follows this rule nd not allow the players w/PIO's or OCI's in the first place, or sport min. allows players w/PIO' or OCI's based on their potential to contribute to the sport to the best of athlete nd coaches abilities.

The sports min. nd federation has allowd these foreign indian players w.o "indian" passport in the beginning, then now they ar objecting them. Hypocrisy nd foolishness.

you mean to say have a indian passport and live elsewhere (in Somdev's case USA). Indian constitution is return by indians and can be changed in a way advantageous to India. Moreover if in some category Indians cannot qualify to olympics and NRI's can, whats wrong in having medals in India's account! Its just give and take! There should be provision to individuals to select which nation they represent in case they are multinationals. will there not be big news if some american or otherwise with indian origin does something!

Somdev is born in Tripura. He is basically a Tripuri Boy. He is related to R D Burman and S D Burman, from the Royal Tripuri family. He is studying in US now, but grew up in Guwahati and Chennai. Unless you know of a guy completely, never comment on that guy. His surname is written a little different way. It should have been Debbarman. Thats how Tripuris write their surname.

Somdev has beaten a top class player.

He also beat the 1999 World # 1 - Carlos Moya.

Great going ... I hope corporates sponsor such a talented tennis player, so that he can achieve more success for India.

I beg to disagree. Though I hate the message of patriot , I have to tell you Krishnan at his time came upto semis in wimbledon. Vijay Amrithraj at one time was on par with Borg and connors. True, tennis is a very competitive game and requires lot of killer instinct. Vijay and Ramnathan Krishnan appeared on the world tennis map. But patriot is definitely an A**H**e.

Everyone misses the point. Leander Paes is of Bengali and Armenian descent. Leander's father is of Armenian descent. He is very much a Kolkata boy and a direct descendant of the famous Bengali poet Michael Madhusudhan Dutt, who introduced blank verse to Indian poetry. check the facts for yourself before you speak. But dont belittle him by claiming him for one part of india. he has single handedly achieved more for the country over the course of his career, than most of us put together will do in a lifetime. and somdev devvarman is originally from tripura. north india by the way has a number of budding tennis players - cant remember names at the moment.
