Sanias is a first round champion. Dont compare that beauty queen with Somdev, who gives his cent percent while playing
opponnents.

good to see someone playing singles

India has always produced fake talent in tennis (read: doubles players where there is no competition)

But the winners in Singles do not play doubles well. Or doubles is not there priority or they dont combine well. so doubles is also a specialised department like singles.

One has to appreciate, where the talent gets recognized "VED". That way chennai has identified his talent.

Somdev proved it
by pradip Singh on Jan 10, 2009 02:30 PM  | Hide replies

Leander Paes was heavily criticised for choosing Somdev as the singles player for India in a Davis Cup. Leander was the Indian team captain. Somdev was selected ahead of Rohan Bopanna and Ashok Amritraj. Somdev was not a recognised player at that time. They were very angry with Leander Paes and declined to play under him. Leander had realised Somdev's potential. Ashok Amritraj and Rohan Bopanna has played a long time in the circuit but they havnt done much in the ATP circuit. They cannot improve much. While Somdev has the best potential. There seems to be something extra in Somdev to become the top player of India and also to break into the top 100. He has upset two very good top 100 player in the world at the Chennai open.

Do you know who is ASHOK Amritraj? Search the net. Somdev was selected alongwith Rohan and PRAKASH and not ahead of them. As Prakash was not fully fit, Somdev played on the opening day.

Dont invent stories....

I know ASHOK Amritraj is Vijay Amritraj's brother and he played Tennis too. I wrote Ashok instead of Prakash in a hurry. But what I wanted to mention was that why the Indian players were angry with Leander Paes. He had won the only bronze medal in tennis for India. He plays Davis Cup for India for so many years, and won many matches for India. When playing for India, Leander gives more than 100 pr cent. How much the oter players have achieved barrin Mahesh Bhupathi.

Dont focus on Ads!!!
by senthil kumar on Jan 10, 2009 12:03 PM

This is great sign for the future tennis.

Before that the advertisement companies will spoil his games.

At the same time the government should take responsibility to help these kinds of players in sponsorship.

somdebburman's feat
by biswanath roy on Jan 10, 2009 10:46 AM  | Hide replies

somdeb has reached the semifinals of ATP Chennai, becoming the first indian/of indian origin to do so.it is a tremendous feat. however one should not go head over heels over his performance, we have to see him perform in tournaments abroad where one's grittiness, temperament, skills are tested. moreover how seriously high ranked players treat this Chennai tournament is to be given a thought. nadal came to this tournament last year and lost in the QF's, then went on to win french, wimbledon, beijing olympics & other ATP tournaments, became no 1, & this year gave a slip, & is playing in abudhabhi & qatar.murray, federer, djokovic the current world no 4,2&3 also gave chennai the slip & preffered playing in the gulf tournaments.
home support for somdeb & the attitude of high ranking players is to be seen in this perspective, as loosing in QF's also gives you a handsome amount. anyway best of luck for 2009 to the lad

Leander was to first Indian to reach SF here. I think it was in 1998.

Somdev's father is an IT official who was posted in Chennai for 10 years. Hence Somdev learned his formative tennis at Chennai. Thereafter he moved to US for higher education. As such he is still an Indian and his parents are from Tripura. Good to see his neighbours and classmates cheering for him at stands. That gives him extra energy. Wish he wins the title
