PARTHO BAGCHI
FEDEX
by PARTHO BAGCHI on Sep 10, 2008 01:33 PM

Someone commented in this forum yesterday of Roger being 'Federeresque'.Federer was at top for record four & half years - incredible & he is the only one to get two majors ie.Wimbledon & US Open five times in a row.Such was his standard that we expected nothing less than divine, sublime & 100% perfect tennis from him!Now if anyone comes anywhere close or near to him in quality & consistency, his game will be called 'FEDERERESQUE' like we in cricket used to call Lara & Tendulkarkar's game 'BRADMANESQUE'!!!

Rafa is going to fizzle out soon.
by V S on Sep 10, 2008 12:12 PM

Rafa plays a phyiscally exhausting game and it is unlikely that he will last 4 years at the top.

Murray who thrashed the Nadal in Semifinal was thrashed by Federer in straight forward sets.
If Nadal will play 15 matches on Hard court or Grass court with Federer, Federer will be ahead in head to head record. But it's hard luck of Federer that Nadal is not capable to reaching in finals of Hard court and Grass court tournaments(to meet with Federer). Wimbledon final victory was just a fluke. We will see next year he will win only one grand slam French Open.

Now, that's the perfect explanation for Nadal leading Federer in head to head record - He reaches finals of French and beats him invincibly; but everywhere else, he loses before final (which FedEx does) and so FedEx can't take revenge upon him. If they play evenly on all surfaces; RF will lead him by more than double the wins.

Infact, i would say; every year ATP should hold bilateral tournaments for Nadal and Federer on all surfaces throughout the year, with 5-10 matches on all surfaces; to decide the better of the two.

How many Clay court tournaments before Australian Open. Because I think Nadal will win only those.

Roger Federer
by A Singh on Sep 10, 2008 11:19 AM  | Hide replies

Roger Federer next plays in Sockholm, Madrid, Basel and Paris before the season ending Shenghai Masters. He has to defend 1325 points in these tournaments. Last year, he had won at Basel and Shenghai. Assuming that he is able to win at these places and is able to reach finals of the other two tournaments, his tally at the end of the year may touch 6200.
After that, should he win the Australian Open, he will gain 550 points to reach 6750. If Nadal too retains everything this year he won last year, but is not able to reach the semi finals at Australian Open, his tally will come down to 6650.
So, theoretically, Federer could be world no. 1 again, after the Australian Open.

Defending points is difficult once you reach the top. You have to be at the top of your game always and defend the points of your previous wins and, if possible, add additional points also. However, top players always try to garner most points through Grandslams and Masters' Tournaments. Federer did this successfully for 4 long years. Nadal always used to fade away after Wimbledon in the past 3 years. Therefore, he had nothing much to defend whereas Federer's dominance used to commence from Wimbledon (though he reached the French Open finals the last three years) and continue through to the Masters final, the season ending tournament. That is why this year Nadal started earning more points once he won Wimbledon and continued his good run thereafter. On the contrary, Federer faded away after Wimbledon (where also he lost points by losing the finals)till he won the US Open. Federer still has lot of points to defend and Nadal not much. This is to Nadal's advantage to widen the gap, given the type of season they both are having. However, the real test for Nadal begins next year after the French Open (he always dominates the Clay court season and may successfully defend his points till the French Open)as he has to defend lot of points. Perhaps Federer can do a Davydenko and play lot of tournaments to garner points, though one feels that top players never do that! Any how, it is a long haul for Federer to regain the no.1 spot, though he will certainly win more Grandslams!

Good evening, Dr Vasudevan.
I do not know much English, and I do not know much Tennis either. But to my understanding, for defending or accumulating points, all one has to do is, to keep winning. So, how is defending points different from and more difficult than earning them?
Please do not mind this silly question, Sir. After all I am poor both in English and Tennis.

We Indians are very good in writing. Wonder if some FEDEX Likes can be fuelled from India. Y shd we always keep writing but not winning in a big way. We Indians often make a mountain of a mole and we spoil our sportsmen/women,making them to give more time on ads than focus on their play

Hunger was back......
by Anurag Rathore on Sep 10, 2008 09:51 AM

1.His second-round opponent, Radek Stepanek, said, "The hunger was back."
2."I almost felt invincible there for a while," Federer admitted after winning the 13th Grand Slam.
3.Murray said : "If he played like that and I was absolutely fresh, I'm sure it still would have been a very tough one for me to win.

A poet with a tennis racquet
by Rakesh on Sep 10, 2008 06:58 AM  | Hide replies

Roger is definitely the best player of all time. Rafa is also good and looking at his hunger he may even end up with more grand slams than anyone else. But he is sheer power and on court looks like he is battling for his life.
Its like comparing Laxman with Gilchrist. The former is a poet with the bat and the later looks like a baseball player whacking the ball all over, though I must admit Gilchrist might've won more matches for his team.

Sampras, rafa and others are aggressive whereas Fedex is serene. Watching Fedex playing is like listening to Romantic Poem. He is class apart. Rightly said like Laxman or Mark Waugh of cricket.
