It is realy a great performance by an Indian

In US the tennis is popular and you can see the people playing tennis in all the community (like street in India). In India the only popular game is cricket because most of Indians watch or play cricket (most stupid game). If some one being in India wins such large tournaments then it is really a great achievement. We Indians should congratulate Paes for making us proud at many international platforms. Indians should also support the game like tennis, badminton, shooting, wrestling etc. Now it is time to discourage cricket in India.

I do not understand why people write bad about cricket. If you dont like the game, dont follow it. Dont speak about it. I think Cricket is a wonderful game that increases the team spirit and camaraderie. And I think thats a huge gift that the game gave to a country like India. What else would a Hindu, a Muslim, a Sikh and a Christian do together in India? I think what they are doing "together" is a very big reason for the entire country to stay united!
Cheers to Cricket!
(And of course Congrats to Leander Paes, thats a totally different story.. my point is that cricket is not bad)

Yes. You are right. Cricket is so popular just because it can be played with a cheap rubber ball and a cheap bat. Also many players can play with just these two implements. For wickets, you can just draw three lines on the wall. For all other games, you require costly items.

Very true but i have reason to beleive that the two sports can co-exist, we don't have a reason to deemphasize cricket, after all, it our national sport. Hockey is no longer seen as number one sport. In tennis, we have lot of talent and we need to put infrastructrure in place. If tiny Serbia can produce champions in Tennis like Nole(Djokovic), Jelena Jankovic, i see no reason why a huge country like India cannot produce 10 high class tennis players who will bring glory to India in Grand slam tournaments!!

rediff reporting sucks!
by Prabhuram Jagadeesan on Sep 06, 2008 01:15 AM  | Hide replies

This is one other reason why any other sport other than cricket is not growing in India..The media don't give a rat's ass for any other game, but when we lose to someone better, be there first to call "Fails, miserable, lost their way etc.," People who just read the title will think that he lost in the 1st round or something.. I remember times of India noting this particular worst attitude by press in an article. It quoted two instances.
1. Indian olympic swimmers finished at national record timing at the olympics. But since they din't enter the finals of that event, press reported " Swimmers lose their way in water at Beijing".

2. Once an Indian lady qualified for the finals of a shooting event (top 8 out of 120 odd participants) and finished 8th in the finals..Press report -- 'XXXXX finishes last'

Please stop this kind of bad reporting once and for all as this discourages people who wants to take the sport as career.

And by the way, anyone who watched the game today will certainly agree with me in opposing the usage of "fails -- or any disgusting usage of words" for leander's game. He played awesome.

Prabhu, I agree to your comments but honestly the heading is true for today's match. Paes blew up couple of good chances in both the sets and double faulted on a set point to give the advantage back to them. Good effort but definitely FAILED to use the opportunity

you should learn to appreciate people and how do you realize that he is not india. Do you think that only hindus can be real indian??? He was born in Goa to Vece Paes and Jennifer Paes and raised in Calcutta, India. Vece Paes was a former Indian hockey midfielder, and representing the Indian team in the 1972 Munich Olympics, that won the bronze medal. Jennifer Paes is a former basketball player from India who captained the Indian national basketball team in 1982.She is the mother of Leander Paes, India's top tennis player, and the ex-wife of India's former field hockey player Vece Paes.
He is the one of the greatest sportsperson in india, I have ever see. Check his performance in olympic from 1992 to 2008. have you ever played at school level??? do something before criticize anyone...specially a hero like paes..........
