Was it Mal Anderson of Australia, who won the US Open in 1957?

Mr Singh, you appear to be a genius. I was looking for an answer myself, and I had not been able to go that far back in my search. You could be right. Perhaps this question should be answered by other experts like Mr. bano tango.

No, it is not.
Mal Anderson was unseeded, when he won US Open in 1957. It is for sure.
If anyone achieved this feat earlier, I do not know.

Mal Anderson was quite a player. He came to India to play for Australia in Davis Cup in early seventies. He was about 37 years of age at that time. Vijai Amritraj, who was in prime form at that time, had to make 110% effort to beat him in a gruelling five setter.
The top ATP ranking he achieved was about 125, in 1974. What is important is: that he was playing Tennis until 1974, and competing.
He did win U.S. Open in 1957; unseeded. In 1958, when he was seeded, he lost to Ashley Crawford in the Final.

You following Tennis since 1957, eh?
This forum seems to be full of octagenarians, who are hell bent on showing who is the oldest.
What the hell has Mal Anderson got to do with Wimbledon 2008? Why are you giving us this useless piece of information?

First of all, I apologise for giving an incorrect information. Ashley Cooper won U.S. Open in 1958, and not some Crawford.
The idea here is not to show how much I know, but to try to answer a question raised by a fellow Tennis fan. Mr. Vasudevan seems to be a genius himself, since he has left the forum after asking a difficult question. Even learned followers like bango tango have not tried to answer this question.
I have not been following the game since 1957, am not an octagenarian, and am sorry for offending a young man like you.

I am sorry Mr Singh. You desrve all respect for your knowledge and humility.
In fact Anderson playing until 1974, was not such a big deal. It was the trend those days. The game was not as fast and demanding as it is today, and players used to last longer. Ken Rosewall, who was of the same agegroup as Anderson, was runners-up at Wimbledon and U.S. Open in 1974.

One down, one to go!
by Narahari on Jun 26, 2008 09:38 AM  | Hide replies

`One down, one to go' must be the thought of Federer. Djokovic and Nadal are touted as the prime contenders for Federer.Nadal is the King of Clay, but highly inconsistent on other surfaces, in spite of his two consecutive finals at Wimbledon. Djokovic wins and loses - he won the Indiana Wells Masters and lost in the first round of the Miami Masters after a four day gap. One day he is on top of the world. The next day he collapses. He is highly talented and definitely a contender for world no.1 ranking, provided he becomes a bit more consistent. What can one say about Federer! He is out of form, out of sorts - in spite of all this he is still the most consistent, especially in the majors. That is the difference between Federer and the others. It is easy to become world no.1, but thereafter difficult to consistently win and defend the points thus earned. Federer has done it successfully the last three years and is finding it difficult this year. In spite of that, he is more consistent than other top players. Hence, a shaky Federer this year (well, he may not think so but the media and his rivals definitely think so!)must be thinking after Djikovic's loss at Wimbledon - `one down, one to go'. The one to go is Nadal!

Federer has to beat nadal...
Fedex fans should not hope to see Nadal loose to someone else and make federer's path easier. Nadal proved that he is the undisputed king of clay by decimating federer in the French open finals. Now it is Fedexs' time to show who rules on grass....And he cant do that by not facing Nadal.
In fact all tennis lovers should hope for a Rafa vs Fedex final because it really does not get better than that. I personally feel that Rafa will win earlier on grass than federer would on clay....

The following are facts. Nadal's game on grass has improved by leaps and bounds. He is in greater form this year than Federer. And he destroyed Federer at French Open. But, there is one more revealing fact. In the latest issue of `Time' magazine there is a very informative article about the wimbledon grass. If Tennis lovers could get hold of this article, they will know the reason why Nadal has an opportunity to win Wimbledon earlier than Federer has an opportunity to win French on Clay. The surface has been deliberately slowed down by the Wimbledon authorities by changing the variety of grass used to make it last longer. Even though the grass was changed in 2001, because of rain that year there was not much of a change and Invanisevic and Rafter served and volleyed their way to the finals and Rafter lost. The very next year, baseliner Hewitt won the title! For Tennis fans with some knowledge they would have seen that the surface has considerably slowed down and baseliners are having a field day on the Wimbledon grass. And Nadal is no exception. This is nothing to take away from Nadal's game. Also, age is on his side - he is 21 to Federer's 27. But then, can any one question the greatness of Federer on multiple surfaces (including Clay), given his astounding records over the last 4 years, especially in the Majors! Perhaps he many not win another Major. But, his greatness is assured.

Djokovic
by VASUDEVAN V on Jun 26, 2008 09:22 AM

For second year running, Djokovic had to leave Wimbledon physically and mentally exhausted. This shows that despite being talanted, he is not able to sustain the rigours of the circuit, and therefore he is not likely to fulfil the promise he shows.
His victory over Federer in Australian Open this year, should be attributed to lack of fitness on Federer's part rather than any brilliance on part of Djokovic.

incorrect draws
by PUNEESH on Jun 26, 2008 07:26 AM  | Hide replies

i really feel that the draws at wimbledon shud have been in such a way that safin shud have met nadal in semifinal instead of meeting federer....in this way, wecould probably have seen rafa ousted even before taking on federer...however there are several other players who are quite capable of doing that on their day..

Better still. Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer could have met in first round itself, so as to diffuse the tension of the spectators about the eventual winner.

How about Horacio De La Pena, Tamer el Sawy, Christian Bergstrom, Gianluca Pozzi, Karsten Braasch, Bernd Karbacher, Jonas Svensson, Marc Kevin Goellner. Tennis certainly has depth and variety and not just the top 10's

bad day
by RamRam on Jun 25, 2008 09:57 PM

Its a bad day for Djokovic. Safin, a great player on his day, was never consistent. Now, Roger will be feeling a sigh of releif. Hopefully, Safin will challenge Roger, if Safin makes it to the semis.
