Typical Indian ignorant masses
by hari rao on Jun 25, 2008 09:40 PM  | Hide replies

Hmmm, what can I say when I see some of these postings? Why is there so much ignorance in our country when it comes to sports? One day they will praise a player and make him an overnight demigod and the next day they will rip him apart. What people do not understand is that consistency sets great sportsmen apart. And of course when the time comes that a Ganguly or a Tendulkar consistently fail, they must graciously leave and let other youngsters take over.

As far as technical ignorance is concerned, it is just rampant even in cricket which happens to be the most followed game. Then what to talk about tennis which has only a handful of sane followers.

I saw the match ball by ball. Djokovic was just not there in the game. It was a bad day for him. By no standards did Marat outplay him. It was rather Djokovic who did not play sharply enough. Granted Marat is talented and I have seen him play some amazing tennis in the past, but Marat is well past his prime. He has been lacking in match sharpness, something which even Marat has acknowledged in his interviews. He has not gone beyond the second or third round for almost 2 years.

So while Djokovic did not play well, Marat played better and so he is obviously the deserving winner. But if Marat wants to go further (I doubt he will get beyond quarter finals), he has to play some great tennis and regain some of his Midas touch.

My objective is not offend anybody who is posting here. But many of my sports l

But many of my sports friends (I am a pretty good tennis player by the way) believe that a majority of the sports loving people do not understand the sport itself. Rather people are bordering on a whimsical understanding with lots of emotional hang ups.

If you play tennis and live in Chennai, we can meet up for a game. Just for fun, if you like.

hari....u said it right that safin is very unpredictable and whimsical...however i think to say that he did not played that well and it was because djokovic did not played well wud be a bit unfair for safin...it was because of the consistent pressure of his shots and winners anhd his trememdous ability to return well that djokovic's game faltered and he eventually fell away...i agree with you that safin will probably not go past the quarters...however to see him play well, being the temendous talent he was and still is, was really good and heartening.

Marat Safin vs Roger Federer
by Jayanta Samaddar on Jun 25, 2008 09:36 PM  | Hide replies

If anyone can stop Roger Federer it's Marat Safin.......and considering the previous ties.......Safin leads Federer by 2-0 I think.....I'd want Federer to win.......but Safin is unstoppable on his day.....especially on fast courts.......US/Aus Open.....well grass is a fast surface too........Fed X 5 time champ at a stretch.......wow I can't wait for the semis......want a good game so Safin go go go reach the Semis........no doubt Federer will reach there too.......hot Wimbledon lineup there......^^

He lost to Safin....does any1 note that?
by ss on Jun 25, 2008 09:24 PM  | Hide replies

there r 'm-o-r-o-ns' out here who hv been hailing the boring roger federer & bashing the promising djokovic. but these l-o-sers don't realise that the guy lost to the merucrial marat safin - a player with no parallels on his day (roger federer & pete sampras would vouch for that - aus open & us open, respectively)

i agree federer is boring because most of the times he plays and wins which many dont like. just like in cricket aus leading others federer is leading others by miles. even bangladesh has defeated aus in a onedayer. that doesnt make them mercurial players. its just a one off match. so is safin. he may win odd matches but not everyday. in the third round he may even be ousted some unknown player. but with federer you cannot expect the same. so i totally agree with you that federer is BORING

dear lakshmi narayanan srinivas,

yr long name seems to hv had its impact on yr intellect. any one with a basic common sense of tennis wud agree hands down about safin's game being one of the best ever.....u cn hv inumerable quotes from his contemporaries (sampras, aggasi, y federer himself). his temperament has always let him dwn....smthing like another gr8 goran ivanisevic. a 2 time grand slam winner & u tend to ridicule him shws yr level of understanding about the game. my suggestion is that u shud avoid posting gibberish & 'gar-bage' on public blogs like this as it gives away yr growth or the lack of it. i hope u tk it as constructive remark.

i totally agree...marat is probably the most naturally talented player on the circuit...but he jus redefiens the term "flawed genius"...every time i see him play...i cant help but despair at the fact that he could have scaled serious heights if he had his head in place...

but i still maintain if theres anyone who can dethrone fedex...it is MARAT SAFIN...

cheers

and it was all fluke that he won 12 grandslams so far. if u dont like anyone just leave him alone. just for critisising him dont do it. I repeat that there is no one who can match federer on and off the field. he is a thorough gentleman off the field as well.

and his best match was in 2005 aus open semi final when he demolished federer in a five set thriller. so federer has a good challenger in safin rather than nadal.

uh how is a five set thriller a demolition?fact is federer outplayed safin for most of that match and had match point in 4th set.had he kept his composure he might have won.but yes no doubt safin played very well after that and deserved to win.But Safin is nowhere as strong as federer mentally

Dear Guest,

I will tell you, why it can be called a demolition?

You know that Federrer served for the match point in 4th test. He might have dreamt about the cup for sure.

But, eventually he lost 4th and 5th set and lost the championship.

I think it can be called a demolition act, considering Federrer was within the sight of victory and lost eventually.
