Great Chess Player
by syed ullah on Jan 19, 2008 11:12 AM

One to one competitions were very popular during the prime days of Bobby Fisher. Top players like fisher, spassky, karpov and korchnoi participated in such tournaments and achieved lot of fame among chess playing countries. World Chess championship news was a major sport item and used to draw lot of interest. sad at the demise of this great chess player.

Syed Basheer,
Hyderabad.

ok stupid question.

Innocent question and more for my education than not....
Why does everyone think he is the greatest player ever ? Didnt Karpov win more titles etc?

Just wondering if the western hype and his history made him more popular ?

I don't know much about chess (except that a good 7 year old player could beat me), so don't get agitated at the question just educate me !

She had requested not to get agitated. Nobody can have knowledge of everything, including you. You first go to school and learn some manners. Now you may want to have a go at me!!

His creativity and style of playing won him accolades allover - Just like Kasparov! There are many people who rate Kasparov higher than Fischer.

As of Karpov, his approach towards the game was totally different. He believed mroe inc onsolidation than taking Risks.

His straight playing style and exploiting small davantages were legendry. In world Candidates match he beat Super GMs Taimanov and Larsen 6-3 and the great Petrosian 6-3, at will. He used to win Tournaments with clean sweep like 11-0 or 8-0. In world Chp match in 1972 he threw away a match, on principles to trail 0-2, and still win the Wld. Chp. He was inventor of Fischer Clock and Random chessm which are a rage.

Controversial genius
by Howzzat on Jan 18, 2008 10:56 PM

Though he was a great chess player, he entwined himself in many controversies ranging from not defending his title against Karpov (After which he lost his World chess title to him) to being in cutody for 9 months in Japan. He accused the USA often. But, he was a genius. The world definitely will miss him.
