It is too late for 2012
by Joseph Robertson on Sep 02, 2008 08:05 AM

Unfortunately it is too late for 2012 - unless we are looking at relatively established disciplines like shooting. If we want to excel in anything else like track or gymnastics or the likes then we should aim for 2016.

india in sports
by Ajai Jacob on Aug 29, 2008 11:32 AM

India in Olympics-50th position in 204 countries
India cicket rank-4 in 12 countries (ICC reco)

India at Olympic better than cicket ...so cheer
Great! This shows that India can never excel in any sports. We are spiritual, not sportive. We are the most peaceful people on the planet with less crime rates(not corruption) and violence than other countries.Hence we have lesser aggression and fighting spirit which is very much needed in competitive sports.Of course,we have lots of sportsman spirit letting others win,ha,ha,ha!

Govt thinking needs to change.

if you really want to get medals in olympics we need to have stadiums & basic infrastructer.Every time govt talks about this only at major sporting events like olympics , other than that no one bothers about building turf courts for Hokey & tennis , shuttle courts. I tried to get badminton court to play , find it very hard even i am ready to pay monthly subscription. in my openion frist we need to have facilities then we can expect something.

what infrastructure...Thats an excuse for our under-performance..how do poor african countries and poor south american countries do better than us. in 1988 Surinam had one Olypic sized swimmimg pool in their entire country and still they won gold in olympics 200m freestyle swimming. We should stop making excuses and try harder and find more opportunities to compete with the best in teh world.

Sports Institues like NDA/IMA
by anjan on Aug 28, 2008 09:40 PM  | Hide replies

We are a poor nation of120Bn. Parents do not want their Sons & Daughters to go for Sports.Bindra is very lucky as has rich parents who supported him with All facilities, foreign trainers etc and spent approx Rs.2 Cr. on him, and he really loved the Sport and focused to Win it Big.
Our Parents, first think of a child's future, hence Education takes priority. If we have Sports Institutes, like Defence - NDA/IMA, which gets you a Educational degree while you Train in Sports. That Institute also insures that you get a Job, which sustains your life. Then only parents will send their Children,to SPORTS.
This is seriously perused at village & town level, India will then shine in Sports. We can have Army of Gymnasts, Sprinters, Shooters boxers etc. if we start now by 2024, we will then have more Gold, then One.

if money didn't play key why top 7 GDP nations are in top 10 of the medals list.I will agree with you that that in some events african countries are doing good without infrastructer. I would like to remind you how much money china spend on training & how much mittal trust is spending on olypic medal prospects.

Tax cricket heavily to be a sporting nation
by TS on Aug 28, 2008 08:52 PM  | Hide replies

If govt. doesn't have money to fund other sports, it should tax 50-60% to all cricketers endorsement, profit from all cricket related leagues and matches, and this should be invested in development of other sports only. Since India is a one sport nation, no matter what people willwatch cricket, and it would be a constant source of income for govt. to fund other sports. May be after few years, once standard of other games improves, govt. can think of reversing it.

The govt would be more than happy to tax all the endorsements of the cricket players. But the money will end up in the coffers of the politicians.... The sports bodies should be made autonomous and independent of politics

R&D is sports
by TS on Aug 28, 2008 08:39 PM

What we may require possibly institutes that do R&D on technology involved in sports, medicine, bio-mechanics e.t.c. Australia is one of best sporting nation in the world, and it has few such unversities. To start such a unversity, we obviously need people who understands sports at the highest level. So few companies, instead of endorsing stupid cricketers to sell their products, may come forward and at lest start such a institute, and sponsor initially to get the faculty/coches from best of the countries to get our people a better exposure. Without this, there may not be any improvement in the standard of sports in the near future.

you don't need IIT for sports
by sahi on Aug 28, 2008 07:37 PM  | Hide replies

You need sports in IITs and all colleges. There should be sports scholarships and sports facilities in all prestigious colleges to get students interested in sports.

That is a wrong approach. People who want to excel in sports should take up sports as their career. If you try to study in IIT - a technology institute that require high level intelligence and high level dedication to technology - and try to do well in sports trying to elevate yourself to Olympics performances, thats not going to work out. Yes, you can have sports in IITs, but that is only going to get to a level of creating healthy engineers. Not world class athlets.

People who get Olympics gold medals are generally those who dedicate themselves to sports. Now I know Abhinav is managing a company etc, but that is just an exception.

Basically you can not produce world class athletes by providing schlorships and facilities in prestigious non-sports colleges. As the author suggests, institutes dedicated to sports are part of the solution.
