The Real Failures are Passing Judgement on those who TRIED
by Kishore Joshi on Aug 21, 2008 10:59 AM  | Hide replies

I think every Olympian is far better than his critics.
Atleast they represented the Country, unlike the rest of us who were bogged down by the CBSE BOARDS or selfish dreams of becoming an engineer or a doctor.
Every Olympian should be given One crore rupees for putting India on the face of the Olympic Map.
It is easy to criticise but very difficult to accomplish.
There is a lot of Pain and Hardships our Olympians have faced before "losing a medal".
Think about it.

I agree with your first point and for that there must be at least one period of one hour of playing and not just PT. But I am not in agreement with 2nd point because then only politician babies will go there for one crore each.

"Politician babies" will still need (if they can) ten years of solid work to qualify for Asian Games, not Olympics. I don't think they can afford to spend so much time on something that doesn't "repay" them instantly.

Olympics requires an Olympian Effort - You can't just walk into Olympics - Even Laluji hasn't been able to put his son in the Indian Cricket Team, Yet!

Thank You for appreciating part of my comments though!

i see so bloggers blaming goverment for not providing any facilities to sportsmen who are preparing for any events like olampic. first of all tell have we asked them to provide any time, in election agend all most all parties have points about poverty, jobs, tax reduction, free rice this and that. we also bot enforce them to concentrate on this area.

My point is we are in democrated country we need ask to our leader what we need then only they can. Simple blaming htem is wrong. Politicians think that other issue are major problem our country growth so they are concetrating on that. If any way i am wrong please tell me.

WRESTLING FOR SUCCESS
by Dwaraka Nath on Aug 21, 2008 10:52 AM  | Hide replies

WRESTLING IS OLDEST SPORT IN INDIA AND PEOPLE IN RURAL AREAS ARE MUCH INTERESTED IN THE GAME. LALU YADAV WAS GENEROUS IN ANNOUNCING RS. 55 LAKHS REWARD TO SUSHIL FOR HIS ACHIEVEMENT. WHY NOT LALU COME FORWARD AND ANNOUNCE WRESTLING, KABADDI, KHOKHO ARE THE CORPORATE SPORTS OF INDIAN RAILWAYS. THESE SPORTS DO NOT REQUIRE MUCH INFRASTRUCTURE.

SPORTS PERSONS LIKE ANJU BABI GEORGE SHOULD NOT BE ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE IN LONG JUMP ANYMORE. A PERSON PRACTICING FOR LAST FOUR YEARS TO PARTICIPATE IN OLYMPIC HAS MADE MESS WITH THREE FOULS. WHY SPORTS MINISTRY IS NOT IDENTIFYING NEW PEOPLE AND ENCOURAGE THEM?

facilities are more important than rewards
by rakesh tiwari on Aug 21, 2008 10:22 AM  | Hide replies

The governments across the country are bestowing rewards to Bindra, sushil and vijender. but they did not provide facilities when these athletes were yearning for them. The govt attitude is telling a school kid to prepare for the exam without books and if he happens to pass reward him with a computer!

Why is the government rewarding only these 3 guys. Just bcoz they won medals. What about other members of Indian Olympics team??? All other members also prepared hard and they also need finacial support and other facilities. Just imagine what will happen if all these ath;etes boycott Olympics because lack of facilities provided by Indian Govt.

Do you think, these govt. are actually going to pay this money to the athletes? Bindra is anyway not gonna receive these cash awards. Others will also have to do so many formalities that they may skip. Actually, this money now might have shifted from the public account to awards account. Any unclaimed award will sweetly shift to the party fund. Elections are coming and all the politicians need money. So, declaration business is just a process to transfer the tax payers money to the party fund. Same happens in train tragedies etc. How auditrs allow this remains a question. Or may be that awards/ compensations get shifted, invested. Interests are earned and if audit catches it, the original amount shifted back. Public sympathy for Netaji's concern towards athlete come as a bonus.

We should hang our heads in shame
by Suraj Singh on Aug 21, 2008 10:16 AM  | Hide replies

China has won over 45 Golds at last count. I have not a single article where they are going over the top. In fact US is doing some introspection on why they are losing in track and field. Of course I salute these winners against all odds, but we are making fools of ourselves in front of the world by crowing about our 3 medals.

You are right Suraj.

But tell me one thing. How many medals did you win for the country????????

Its easy to criticize boss, but its extremely difficult to earn this kind of glory when the administration has a step-motherly conduct. Dont forget my friend that "success is the biggest motivator".

It is this "crowing" that will motivate them to equal or better their performance.

It is this "crowing" that will motivate other hopefuls to put in that extra effort that is required.

Dont undermine the achievement shown by our players. Remember, Rome wasnt built in a day. India is on a course of becoming a superpower. Yes, we have our short comings. But instead of feeling shame, do some introspection (like your fav. USA).

If you cant do anything constructive, PLEASE STOP GIVING NEGATIVE COMMENTS.

Well said Ashsh!! I endorse ur vantage point!
Lets be pragmatic. We all knew before the start of the olympics that we are losers. But, these sportsperson have been a braveheart all the way. These are guys who have come against all the odds and made it BIG in the global arena. Its easy to condescend them ,but they deserve their share to bask in the Glory and get all the adulations and accolades. If media is doing it (CROWING it) then its good. Its good for the posterity and all the aspirants.

Well done boys!! We are really proud of you!!

Then you should have chosen your words carefully.

I am certainly not feeling shameful for having won "just 3 medals". But I am proud that we won more medals than ever before.

And you say I dont have logic. Then assuming that you have some logic in your comments, tell me one thing. Do you wish our players to just wake up one day and go to the olympics and get 45 medals????????????????

My dear friend even when you are constructing beautiful buildings, the first step is to dig up a lot of dirt (which is not exactly pleasing to eyes) to lay a good foundation. What you call "ridiculous fanfare", I call this encouragement to all the sportspersons, a foundation to contruct more medal winning performances.

And you seem to be very influenced by USA's sports achievements. Have you ever seen what kind of fanfare there is for even university level competetions?? In that country even a college player is cansidered a star.

We dont have that kind of system here. So I think it is just to shower all the praise and accolades that we can on those who relentlessly followed their dream in shadows of anonymity. Not only this, I think even the guys like Jitender Kumar deserve accolades for having reached in top 8.

Aim for 10 Golds in London

London is full of Indian supporters. Just pick up 10 sports and train for Gold. It is certainly within India's reach with a bit of planning and encouragement. India is RICH, not a poor country, its people are strong, and the vegetarian diet when properly balanced is the Athletes diet these days.

India rich?? Yeah sure....We can easily make out that are among those smug, self centred middle class(who's probably working as an engineer in MNC), who benefitted most frm govt policies. Sir, 70% of indias pop is rural, literacy rate is not even 70, and the max number of poverty ppl in India.

You need facts Suraj?????

No. of Indians in the world's richest list is increasing every year.

Economy has been growing remarkable for last 4 years now.

Only one person (L.N.Mittal) has formed a corpus of USD 10 Million to sponsor and train athletes and sportspersons for olympics. His trust targeted 10 medals this time. And they are a bit disappointed at not having achieved it. And are now upping the ante for London.

And its just a matter of time since more corporates come up to respond to their National Duties.

But in one area our country is indeed poor. Self Pride. Good for nothing people like you cant contribute anything for the development of the country, but desert their mother land as soon as they get any option to leave.

Dont forget Mr. Suraj that India, a country just 61 years old, which was in complete disarray at the time of independence, is competing with the worlds developed nations in many spheres. And the competetion can be even tough if instead of critisizing somebody's patriotism by calling it "plain jingoism", we ourself contribute a little bit to make this place better.

Buddy Ashish....you are right to an extent and I like the way you answered that Suraj regarding Olympics. But then Lakshmi Mittal is a rich man in UK isn't he ? Correct me if I am wrong. He is valued in Great Britain Pounds or they speak about him in Millions of US$ worth (when they convert). Everything whose worth is measured in World market is measured in US$. Why so ? Even oil prices are said to be XYZ Million or Thousand or whatever US$ a barrel.

Why nothing in world market is ever measured in INR (Ind Rupee) if India's is such a rich country ? Why I see so many beggars on roads in even developed BIG cities of India ?

Fact is that in INDIA there is no balance. RICH become RICHER and poor become Poorer and actually live their entire lives on roads and in slums. This is real India. But Indian economy is rising with many foreign investments and hope it changed all that in next 50 years or so. Atleast our children and next generation can see a richer India. As of now we have to live with it. 60% of India lives below poverty. See on TV that some Indians dont even get 2 times food to eat. No basic education. Leaking roofs in schools, small rains also resulting in floods even in big cities where poor people are killed and houses washed away. If poverty reduces and all are able to get 3 times food a day and live in BASIC dignity of atleast 1 room house then automatically India will produce more sportsmen & Medal winners like RICH countries USA , China, UK etc.

Dear Gulabjamun Bhujia,

I agree to your point that the econimic disparity in India is huge. And also on the point that you see beggers more and more these days. But my dear anonymous friend, I can guarantee you, that many of those beggers are beggers by choice. But still this argument cant hold good as there are many who work hard and still barely manage two square meals a day.

Here I would like to bring to your attention to China, which you mentioned as a RICH country. When China was developing, the development was centred in the western areas, and eastern areas suffered neglect. Then the Chineese just said, that there is no need for you to worry, because once your western brothers prosper, you also will reap the benefits.

This same effect has started to show in India now. The major cities have now reached their saturation point. Now development processes are headed towards the Tier II cities. This will bring economic development closer to villages.

Tax collections are increasing and the amounts now will be used for development of the areas which have been untouched by this.

My friend India is now changing. But still WE (people like me and you) need to work on eradicating the corruption prevailing in all spheres. There is no dearth of funds in India. All that is needed is the right application of those. Its high time that we change the world bank comment that referred to us as "best planners but worst implimenters"
