ROFL - - - Sania gets tough Olympic draw
by Vivian Richards on Aug 07, 2008 06:58 PM  | Hide replies

Even if we exclude top 50 Ranked players from Olympics our beauty goddess Sania will not pass through the first round....

Her concentration will be on applying makeups and plasters all over her body just to show that even with injury she is participating in Olympics...

Rediff Pls Wake up and bring people to limelight who are performing well at the international circuit. Dont restrict yourself just to Tennis and Sania alone. There are plenty of Stars from India.

You know Sharapova is suffering from injuries and nobody says anything. Serena and Venus were out for a year because of injuries and nobody said anything.
Hey Richards, Leander won a medal in 1996 when he was ranked below 50. So, let's hope even if the task at hand is very difficult.
How about encouraging instead of criticizing?
And let's encourage ALL the stars that you speak of. Encouraging Sania does not mean we are discouraging others, or vice-versa.
Let's also encourage other would-be stars, instead of giving them the impression that hey, once you do slightly better, we will cut you down in any way we could.

SANIA WINS OLYMPIC GOLD
by hari nair on Aug 07, 2008 06:18 PM  | Hide replies

Who said Sania Aunty can't win Olympics Gold Medal? She can certainly win if world's top 500 players dont participate. Here is the scenario.
Ist round - Gets Bye
2nd round - Opponent injured
3rd round - Opponent injured
4th round - Opponent injured
Q.F. - Opponent injured
S.F. - Opponent is world no. 756. sania
wins 1-6, 7-5, 12-10.
FINAL - Opponent is world no. 601. sania
wins 0-6, 7-5, 14-10.
CONGRATS TO INDIA & SANIA. SHE WINS GOLD MEDAL FOR INDIA.
Rediff, no use in such headlines "sania gets tough draw". even if she gets the easiest of draws, she can't go past 1st/2nd round. that's her destiny.

well said. media is only creating hype abt her. Sania is not so worthy as she get d attention. instead of creating hype abt her media sud focus on other games, like Archery, Shooting, where India can make something out in olympics.

Mang UNCLE ....you are a clone of Hari Uncle or what ? We havent achieved anything...We are not even experts on Tennis.. SO we should atleast let her play the game and CLAP for her and encourage her..as we are Indians. We wont be allowed to even enter playing pitch in Beijing because we ..you and me and all are only TALKERS on the blog. We are not her coach or her relative or anything. We havent achieved anything at all. So better be proud she is representing INDIA our country at Olympics and feel proud for that and try to cheer for her and feel happy if she wins each match. Even if she doesnt ...still feel happy that she represented INDIA. Not a single man in Tennis Singles ... you or me or anyone could go to Beijing for playing for India na. COuld we ?

Instead of encouraging our sports-persons to do better, these people can only come up with negative comments.

brilliantly put anamika. Hari Nair "UNCLE" can only bark and pass useless comments at others. He cant even win ALUMINIUM MEDAL forget Gold....even if 10 Tennis players in Kerala competed against him.

UNCLE Hari....can you hold the tennis bat and hit a ball at 150 kmph speed. If you can do that ... Anamika and I will present you with a coconut. If you can return a stroke which hurtles past you at 150 kmph without touching the net...then we will give you a jackfruit.

Stop talking and start achieving yourself UNCLE before pointing at others

Yes Lucky B.. You, me and Anamika are supporting Sania. Qualifying for OLYMPICS itself is a great achievement that too being a girl in a male dominated country like India with men like us always finding fault and all...at such a young age she has achieved so much... CREATED HISTORY in WOMEN's TENNIS in INDIA. NO man from India (NOT EVEN ME ...I can only talk on blog) has achieved anything in SINGLES TENNIS. She has achieved so much.

Thanks to supporters like you and Anamika etc.. we are proud of sports persons like Sania.

God bless her. God bless India.

guys , why do u blame hari uncle...and look closely whom are you supporting instead...sportsmanship doesnot mean we have to be overwhemmed by the fact that she is the only indian player in top 100...when did she last cross any 2nd round ? dont you think she is over hyped player who would perhaps have done better if camera dont follow her everywhere...what did she do last time by which we can still be confident on her ability to win any glory for india...guys , dont just support blindly, open your eyes and praise somebody who deserves...tell u the truth, if others would have got the facilities that this gal has got , u wd have found many indian gals playing in top 100...

Hey let us encourage our people to do BETTER, instead of criticizing them.
btw, do you know the kind of hard work she put in during her early years? She did not get any of those facilities until later. If our gals put in that kind of hard work, of course they would do better.
So let's encourage, instead of discouraging. She may lose in the first round, but let's keep encouraging our people to do BETTER.
Heck, I am happy when I see Neha and Shikha make it through the qualifiers at some tourneys. Think positive, buddy and let the next generation see that we encourage our sports people.

What facilities...what are you talking about debarshi. I am from Hyderabad the same city where Sania lives. She is just 21 years old and she hardly gets any facilities. Only after participating in Grand Slams and all she got some facilities...Nothing compared to what American, Russian tennis players at world level. Dont forget she still lives in India and she is still recuperating from injuries at such a young age. Despite wrist surgery she is able to play and she puts her whole hearted devotion and hardwork and plays, despite people commenting on her and all that.

In 1 billion Indians... how many rich people's kids who have all the facilities on earth ever played for their own State , forget INDIA.

This girl from a small city like Hyderabad (compared to your Kolkotta or Delhi or big Metros) has made INDIA World famous in Ladies Singles Tennis. No Indian girl be it rich or poor or with or without facilities since 1947 has achieved what she has... in Tennis.

Isnt it a shame that we dont have any SINGLES players in MEN and we have to always rely on SANIA MIRZA when we talk of Singles ?

Now you understand....It may sound like HYPE>..but she is all we have atleast till now.

Hope some MEN or WOMEN also match up to her and atleast something close to her Career Best Ranking of World NO. 28.

in general indians are lazy persons and that attitude comes up in any sport event....they do better in sports which involves minimum physical exhaustion...problem is if one of them tried to turn up the table, 1 billion people started dreaming around him/her and soon this poor fella are suppressed under expectations and money flowing around her...now u see the problem??...if supporting somebody degrades her performance then rightout stop supporting and let her grow rubbing the shoulders with international players....another point, i personally believe champions are of their own genre...look at Federar , he might be undergoing bad time this year but he will be back soon and nobody can question his tennis ability, its just matter of time...problem with sania is she didnt show any champion quality at int. level so far, please dont say reaching career high 28 means she is a champion....she just has won one singles atp chpship that too 2nd or 3rd tier....only good thing with her is that she is still 21 so next 3-4 years will be her pick....so better she proves she can beat Vennus Williams on her day better for us..

Maybe we should support Neha and Shikha Uberoi.. oh wait...they are ranked in the 300s

She achieves something no other Indian woman has done before and we have everybody from the Mullahs to the BJP goons targeting her.

Maria Sharapova has an injury and no russians are gunning for her the way people would have if Sania had the same problems.

Why can't we encourage our athletes to go higher, farther, faster instead of cutting them down?
Over a billion people and we cannot get any decent medal prospects. Corruption, communalism, fundamentalism and of course, this crab mentality, is what is bringing India down!

US doesnt want India to get a medal ... so they put Ms. Williams in Sania's draw. Anyway, prayers from 1.13 billion people will help Sania to overcome this hurdle and get us a gold medal....
