Training and strategy is important
by Narendran kumar on Sep 04, 2007 08:25 AM  | Hide replies

Happy to see that out team winning Korea. But we were once world champions. To regain that name, first and foremost thing that needs to be done is change the heads in IHF. Most of them corrupted and does not worry about the future. We need some people who think of introducing latest techniques in training, introduce Astro turf in states where it is not available, give more benefits to players since the star player of hockey does not get money earned by a state cricket player, and above all stop politics. We are already some 20 years behind holland, australia, germany etc., So what we need is rapid action from IHF not just putting blames on others. Otherwise, we may not even qualify for olympics and wc in future.

Astro Turf - our handicap.
by Kabothi Kumar on Sep 04, 2007 07:04 AM  | Hide replies

In the mid-80s, the Europeans made Astro turf the default surface and ever since, India/Pak etc are on the slump. Holland (the size of a small Indian state has 400 astro turfs - almost in every school), but India has less than 10 overall. Only when players reach national level, they get to play in Astro turf surface. That adjustment takes a lot of time and by the time they adjust, they're 35-36 and out of the Indian team.

Even malaysia, china etc have many sports complexes with Astro turf installed and available for free. Australia, Germany etc have thousands of these. Some day, even football will be played in such grounds.

Like Tennis I guess ...we should propose that Hockey also should be played on different surfaces - grass and astroturf both.

also the new version of games (its rules etc), it is said, gives more task to muscle power than tactics. this is also said to be a reason for the slump of asian, esp indian teams. Is there any expert aboard who will say more on this?

by dhruv sharma on Sep 04, 2007 06:21 AM  | Hide replies

its just a media hype of cricket that hockey is ignored in india.indian hockey team has much better record than our poor cricket team....indian crcikett team plays only two or three nation tournaments and that too they loose while hockey is mainly about group tournamenrs like sex nation or 12 nation tournaments so competetiion is much tough there ho many six to 12 nation tournaments indian cricket team has won in last 30 years i guess not more than 2 ha ha....thats tht biggest joke that indian cricket team is still praised after all that...even in current 2 nation series they are loosing

either you are really ignorant or you choose to ignore the success of Indian crciket team. Friend just to praise one sports you don't have to demean another. This is our typical indian mentality, when we wnat to go ahead, we never try to go ahead on our own but instead we pulll others behind so that we appear that we are ahead...really stupid comment that was..
By the way we have won the test series in England and still the ODI tournament is not finished...also the world cup, champions trophy, Twenty20 world series, VB series are always of more than 2 teams...mostly 10-12 teams...so dont show your ignorance here and shut your mouth...and enjoy both cricket and hockey..

tell me, how many cricket tournaments, india have won in which more than 8 nations participated...?

we r not criticising cricket.. but we r opening the eyes of the people who thought india's performance is good in cricket and wasting their time and money in this sluggish sports. its false...

VB series is of 3 teams for your information...also nature of cricket is such that it has both test and one day tournaments...when you play test matches, its difficult to accomodate more than 2 teams...on the other hand hockey has just one type of play and dont last the 5 days as cricket test...

But vinay your good willed criticism still lacks the point. U dint answer the question how many tournaments India has won where six or more nations play? Further, hockey is played by many more countries than cricket. So even winning a bronze in a tournament in hockey is like winning a gold in cricket, dont u think? make the point than mouthing your defense with empty words.

thats true dhruv...

we r better in many sports like hockey, chess etc..

in most of da cricket tournaments hardly 2-3 nations participate. so winning chances become almost 50%...

also, even though thr r so much money and govt/media support in cricket, still they cant deliever a single world-cup in last 25 yrs!

india won just 1 WC in cricket that too not even 10 nations participate. lol

I want Indian hockey to do well just the way that i want Indian cricket to do well!
But i will be honest enough to say that i'll be thrilled when India beat the big 4, ie. Holland or Germany or Aus or Spain! South Korea is a good team but India are expected to beat them!

This is a great victory, but still team should do much better. We r too behind in Hockey/Football in world ranking. If Players want glamour/money like Cricket they should win consistently. We've to do too much to promote Hockey/Football.These two games need much higher fitness, stamina, practice and skill, compared to Cricket so for strong indian youth we all should motivate Hockey,Football,Badminton,TT,Lawn Tennis than useless, hopeless and unreliable cricket.Hope Hockey/Football teams will continue their winning spirit and good performance in future. All The Best.
