Cricket will always rule
by Zaveri on Oct 31, 2007 09:02 AM  | Hide replies

Indians dont have the mental strength to fight in real sports. In fact cricket has changed the defenition of sports and sportsmen. Most of us have a picture in mind when we heard about a sportsman. Butromesh powar is also called a sportsman. Actually cricket is a soft entertainment which suits indians perfectly. We are not a proactive nation so active sports cant get much support among us. The preaching of gandhigiri and ahimsa has already made indian really soft and vulnerable. so cricket will be the no.1 sport in india.

Other sports, barring chess, lasts max 90 minutes, hence, its not a TV money spinner
by sudhir dhar on Oct 31, 2007 08:23 AM  | Hide replies

But cricket, on the other hand lasts either a day(ODIs), 5 days(Tests) or 4 hours(20-20s), thus seduce the gentry, as being on TV for so many hours, causes a hypnotic effect!

Other sports have no chance to compete with cricket due to the TV time soan and exposure.

Before TV became wide spread after the 1982 Asian Games in India, other sports started dying due to Crickets TV exposure.

Oh yeah thats why cricket is the most popular sports in England, Australia and SA. In fact they dont even bother to watch cricket barring few unlike indians who have enough time to watch cricket as well as advertisement

Pour more attention, money and accountability to Football
by Gautam De on Oct 31, 2007 01:41 AM  | Hide replies

It is time we put proper attention to football, instead just being a benevolent torch bearer of the Commonwealth sports - cricket.
It can be argued as a mark of a character of a
nation, how it performs in sports and king of sports - soccer. India should do the following:

1. Remove inefficient politician Das Munsi from IFA
2. Bring in Chuni Goswami or a revered footballer in that post
3. Bring in Jagmohan Dalmiya to bring in more money in football, just like he did in cricket.
4. Bring in a foreign coach as a National Football Adviser, who would spend time mostly for improving infrastructure and finding out new talent. He would work with and help National Coach Bob Houghton.
5. Media should be encouraged to focus on football more.
6. Finally, remove ALL KINDS of POLITICIANS from sports - be in cricket or football. It is the brazen inefficiency and vested interest of politicians, which has reduced India to a minority in sports. FIFA rank 145 (down from 162) only proves that.

I urge rediff.com also: PLEASE DO SOMETHING.

Honestly Rediff didnot even mention about the match before kickoff on 28th Oct. Only Later it mentioned after the date was changed on 30th. at the same time, cricket news even minor one, get big headlines.

sport under unsporting politicians

See who are heading the sports bodies. Indian olympic association, amatuer athletic federation-Mr kalmadi, he is bringing Formula 1, good news, great speed, money. How many indians are benefited, see the state of the sportsmen other than cricket, they are crying for pittance, no infrastructure no scientific development of sports person. What happens to the millions dolled out by the International olympic association, nothing is made public,no body knows how the money is vanishing.Mr Kalmadi is fattened with the coffers of IOA that he cannot get up and leave the chair he is occupying for years together, his end in IOA will only come with his end only, then only the IOA and india sports will be resuurected.

mr P.R.dasmunshi-fotball is in doldrums,no vision for tomorrow, just occupying the chair because of political power and destroying both the sports and politics. Please vacate the chair and hand over the rein to somebody who is a real CEO who can give returns,A drastic change has to come in to this country then only everything will be alright, pray for it folks, that's the only way for us,easy going, jano de yaar, don't care indians. No wonder even after two shots of scotch down his gullet, Mr Iyer's utterances have got no effect on this system, every thing remains calm in chilly delhi and quiet like the silence before the tornado.can we have one for a change.

You did not mention Sharad Pawar. Who is single handedly destroying Indian cricket.

SURESH KALAMADI SHOULD BE IMMEDIATELY REMOVED.
ITS NOW PROVED THAT HE IS A WORTHLESS MAN.
REMOVE MARGARET ALVA ALSO.
MAKE MIKHA SINGH AND/OR LEANDER PAES IOA PERSIDENT.
KICK OUT HORRIBLE POLITICIANS FROM SPORTS.

there's no cause for disappointment
by soumik chowdhury on Oct 30, 2007 08:56 PM

We need to continue playing international football and improve on our winning percentage. Someone in this discussion said that his dreams are shattered. I would rather advise him not to dream but be practical and supportive to Indian football. We were so badly knocked out from this cricket world cup. Yet we are following cricket as keenly as before. We should do the same for football. Its obvious that in these initial days we would loose more matches than win.
