Patience

Have some patience guys. No one can become a champion or a winner overnight. This team has only taken theirs tentative steps towards glory. So much depends on how they are handled and nurtured.

They did the best they could and that is more than than some of our lazy, greedy, over paid and over the hill cricketers.

Stop criticising cricketers. They are also winning. There is not much difference between your hockey team and cricket team!

Never looked like they would Win
by Murthy Valluri on May 11, 2007 09:43 PM  | Hide replies

We continue to be plagued by the same problem that we have faced through the last 2 decades.. We played 2 good games and then we have run of 4 badly played games.
Honestly India never looked like they would win, dont get me wrong they played well but not good enough to win. If penetrations into the opposition Dee were to be considered as goals we would have won hands down.. The problem starts from there on.. all of sudden the team faces collective amenesia and never too sure what to do with the ball...
I really wish the new caoch can address these issues. In the match against Argentina the passes were crisp and precise but today we were all over the place.. Whatever the gameplan was it did not work.
Then again if we can support Indian cricket despite their Losses I dont see a reason why we cannot support the Indian Hockey team through this rough time... I do understand we have a new young team and i hope they get more exposure and they get better with each game and most importantly they are more consistent..
All the best to the Indian Hockey team for the spirit they showed in this tournament... Hope you guys win the Bronze medal...

India played well but lost. It is part and parcel of the game. What is important is how they played. 2-1 is a narrow margin. Match could be anyone's till the end. Well done Indians. All the very best for bronze medal.

Do not lose hope. Victory always comes slowly. Continue the hard work. From what I have seen today the day of your victory is not far.

You fought very well.

We are proud of you.

Developing the Master !!
by Gaurav Mathur on May 11, 2007 09:39 PM  | Hide replies

The team is beginning to develop into a masterful shape. The players fought well. Hope they learn from the mistakes and keep the attacking mode on (while not forgetting the defence). Good job for now but don't get too excited. Next time we want the cup.

What are you saying?? Isn,t this a false dawn??
If we can't beat an average team like Malaysia, how are we going to compete against strong teams like Germany and Spain??
Your optimism is out of place; Indian hockey is dead!!

I think not. Because the team majorly consisted of 'young' players. Entering the semis means that the team (and the players) have began to 'click' with each other. Let's hope that in the next tournament we bring home the cup... Afterall, even you don't want them to lose...
(and as for playing against stronger teams... as we say in Hindi.. 'Karat karat abhyaas ke jad mat hot sujan'.)

if our team was 'inexperienced', malaysia was more inexperienced and they were right second last of the 8 teams in the tournament and see where they are now.

Well guys, if the team is not performing should they stop playing national & international tournaments. There is no question about Gill's incompetence. Still, if anyone who saw the match today, do have to make a fair judgement, would certainly say the team tried and tried hard. The margin of loss was narrow and i remember one oppurtunity missed by us to score, which would have aleast taken us to a draw. The teams performance in the current tournament is much much better than before. They hardly get any sponsors...the govt does not provide them with proper facilities, still the performance that i saw today did not make me feel bad, although it did hurt as India lost.
I back the team and wish them success in the tournaments to come.
Remember, a typicl sign of losers is that they always complain and come back with issues, however, winners always look for solutions. This is a stark reality of today. It is for u to decide which group you belong to!

Malaysia beating India

It becomes routine. Cannot take it, as hockey comes below soccer in Malaysia. How come they can produce these victories aagainst us when they have only 2% of our population.

We have to adapt to do justice to our tradition in hockey

comparing the population is not at all correct my friends. Consider this:
In an organisation there are only 50 employees, as per you... do you think the HR should be able to manage an accurate database of all employees without any issues. I think so.
Slowly the organisation starts growing and in a gap of 4 years the employee count swells beyond imagination to 5000. The HR goes mad as they are unable to keep a count of issues reported. The emp database gives wrong results. So, they decide to automate and invest in a HR solution.
What i am trying to suggest here is that as Shiva mentioned in his quote above "How come they can produce these victories aagainst us when they have only 2% of our population", i would say it is easier for a small country (with a small population) to get a quality team than for a country with a huge population like us.
So, at least in this case "size does not matter". What matters is the controls and measures exercised by the governing authority during the selection and then the training process.

Amit,

Your point is taken and makes sense. However,I hope it does not apply to cricket also, then we can justify losses later to Bermuda, Ireland etc.

My point was Malaysia not only has much lower population. We have been playing hockey for donkey's years and has a rich tradition. In Malaysia, hockey does not figure high as a sport compared to football etc. It attracts mainly the Punjabi community who are also a minority in the minority Indian population. Recently, thay have been beating India consistently.

This means others are stealing a march over us by better training and with a confidence that we are are beatable. Our tradition goes back to Dhyanchand, who was cosidered a wizard in the mould of Bradman. Vicory by dozen goals in Olympics were given and taken for granted till Pakistan came into play.

Though I agree that big population does not guanrentee success, China cannot wait for the olympics to start as they think they can win all the medals. America has been feeling the heat for the last few Games and they know it is getting worse.

So to accept defeat in hockey to Malaysia really hurts, though after all it is just a sport and failure hopefully is a stepping stone to success, but we seem to have only failure stones in sight now and I am craning my neck to see the success stones.

Pls make me an optimist.

India go down to Malaysia in semis
by Krishnaprasad on May 11, 2007 08:56 PM

From where we were, where we are now is certainly commendable.

Its highly idiotic to comment on this young team so quickly. They are just starting to get a feel of pressure situations without the seasoned veterans. They should try to concentrate and digest pressure and play cool. Certainly we were more superior in terms of skills but cool headedness is very important to finish off any match.

We have to fight for 3rd place with korea which is worth a watch. Anywhere between 3 and 4 for this young team is certainly worth its credit as of now.

India Does it again
by on May 11, 2007 08:51 PM

The disappointing show of the indian team in the semis against malaysia only highlighted the fact that we need quality and calm minded strikers in the team .The poor finishing and the shaky defense again did us in .
We need a extra penalty corner specialist and selection of non performing player like harpal singh should be addressed immediately .
We need to bring back sandeep singh into the team ,as quickly as possible .
