Sign of things to come !!!
by Andy on Jul 08, 2007 11:24 PM  | Hide replies

Hats off to both players. And Congratulations to Roger. However, I think this match shows that things are not going to be easy for Federer anymore, against Nadal that is. Federer, who only a few months back claimed that "if anybody is going to beat Nadal on grass, then it's him", had to struggle to beat that same opponent not on clay but in his own den !! Also, after winning today, Roger himself seemed to acknowledge that Nadal has come of age. What say ?

I bet you can't count Nadal out anymore on non-clay courts. Rest is for us to see and for him to display his learning abilities...the way he did by improving on his performance from last wimbledon to this wimbledon.

Hey Judas,
I agree now Federer is ahead of Nadal. But dont u thk Nadal is only 21(just crossed 20 in French open) and he had more years which Federer,Roddick,Safin and Hewitt dont.So he will be new no. 1 in tennis after couple of years and today he proved that he is not only the king of clay but he can play in all surfaces.U have said that he cant play in Hard and synthetic surfaces.Do u know what tier 1 tournament is.This is the tournament where all top players play.Nadal had won many tier 1 tournament in hard and synthetic surfaces and mind u beating Roger. So in future we will see Nadal will win many Grandslams like Roger

Maybe more than Roger by the time he (Nadal) retires !! Just a guess. Coz at the same age (20 yrs something) Roger had no grand slams to his name. Nadal already has multiple slams and looks set for more.

only on clay remember.... assuming fed and others play the way they played in 2007, till 2010 there is no real threat to federer... even if federer retires tonight, there is NO WAY rafa will win 11 grandslams... NOT A CHANCE.... He is a greatt player no doubt though... just unlucky that federer runs the show and others including rafa, djokovic etc are all catching up fast

rafa is 21... agreed... federer is ONLY 25... Given HIS GREATT tennis, miles ahead, he is set to dominate for next 3 years.. meaning rafa will be 24, 25.... by then djokovic and at least 2 more players of his calibre will evolve... IF Rafa has to win other grandslams except french (and french incl in the future...:) ) he has to do it in the next 2 years... if he doesnt, he will be easily forgotten...

THE AVERAGE TENNIS LIFE OF A CLAY COURT SPECIALIST IS ALSO SHORTER THAN THAT OF A ALL COURT OR GRASS COURT PLAYER. eg brugera.
and dont forget that djokovic , andy murray and devydenko are not far away from nadal on any surface - remains to be seen if nadal takes over from fed -

Hey Avada,
Do u know Bruguera even played last yr.And mind u he never reached quarters of other slams which Nadal did.U r right Murray and Djokovic are good tennis players. But Nadal is ahead of them.Bcoz they have to increase their physical fitness. And lastly dont compare Nadal with Bruguera.Becoming Two times Wimbledon Runners Up was not a joke.

roddick is not tough enough... he is already past... no more slams ever for roddick... even hewitt holds a mild chance but no, not roddick..!! youngsters like djokovic and surely nadal (come on, he is a great fighter...!!)who are evolving into all court players will dominate, federer permitting... Fed s reign is on for at least 3 more years, if he gives himself a chance and stays outta injuries... :)

nadal has really acclamatised to the grass but still remains a bit less than fedex but federer is a bit of novice against nadal on clay.....well today's match could have gone either way but federer held his nerves hope we can see a similarly contested final in 2008 roland garros..HAIL FEDEX-RAFA RIVALRY!!

federer the champ, nadal the showman
by abhishek gorlawar on Jul 08, 2007 11:22 PM

yes, this was indeed one of themost awaited andmost beautifully played match on grass after a long long interval - infact in the grandslams

hats off to nadal for displaying a brilliant array of strokes both from the base line and the net.

though am a die hard federer fan; would not mind to say that though federer won the match, nadal stole the show... it was awesome from nadal. exceptionally brillinat

federer as usual magical at crucial moments to take those important points and more importantly save many cruical points in his favor

We have seen a historical moment in Men's Tennis..Surya
by suryanarayana dasika on Jul 08, 2007 11:21 PM

Just as we thought that we saw the greatest of grasscourt players in the form of Pete Sampras, did emerge Roger Federer..and what an era are we witnessing now. One might dispute this comparision given the quality of opposition that Sampras had to face in the form of Edberg, Becker, Rafter, Ivanicevic, Philippousis and so on...but having said that, we cannot deny Federer this moment of greatness wherein he equalled the legendary Borg's record of 5 successive Wimbledon championships. It was a match which could have gone either way..Nadal was really a revelation...Federer did not have a chance to win in Paris, but Nadal had his moments, which he failed to capitalize. It was indeed a privilege to have witnessed such a great match..reliving the 1980 final between Borg and McEnroe.

Federer's game
by jay kay on Jul 08, 2007 11:20 PM  | Hide replies

Federer has a beautiful game, well rounded.
but just as winners rocket from his forehand, and also he is going a lot for topspin backhand these days, he has a penchant for unforced errors. hits it long or to the net quite often.
looks like he can blow a winning position anytime.
on the other hand, Nadal makes much less unforced errors, would chase down any ball, and hits some stunning winners. .....

so I was a bit surprised to see Federer manage to pull it off in the fifth set ....
he played great, but am still longing to see him play the flawless tennis he is capable of. :-)

he didnt play the way he played in 2004 or 2003 finals... he made very few unforced errors then... now he tries too hard and rafa was great... he played scintillating tennis... that forced fed into errors he made

the match goes down in the history books as an epic. But there can be only one winner, and dat was Federer today.Personally, i'm a Nadal fan but Federer is THE master & he proved it today. Also i'm sure as long as Federer is around,Nadal can never become No.1 player. But dont give up Rafaa.

Yaa thats true. But age is on the side of Rafa.So we can expect Rafa to be no. 1 after couple of years. And I am sure that he will also win the rest grandslams.Today he proved that he can play in any surface.

one of the best i have seen in Grand slams. Fedex was lucky today to survive. actually Nadal played better but luck went Roger's way during crucial moments. in tennis what matters is not the number of points but when you take them. well done Nadal and Roger.

Dear Judas Preist,

Federer took the final set comfortably? Did he rock or he was rocked? Down 15 - 40 in two consecutive games on his own serve, the genial Swiss was about to pick up the runner's trophy when he lifted his game with some big aces. He had been blown off court in the 4th court. Tell me, has any other player pushed Federer on grass to 0 -4 in the first four games of a set as Nadal did in the 4th set? The concept of tie - break favours the big servers and Federer escaped because of those tie breaks and a single loose game from Nadal in the crucial final set. Nadal had Federer many times on the mat and it was sheer providence (which Federer called it as luck) which won him the day. Otherwise, it would have been Nadal who would have equalled Borg's record of a win in Paris and Wimbledon in the same year. It was destiny that one of Borg's records had to fall today and as someone who had watched on TV the 1980 Borg - McEnroe finals live, I can confidently say that this match between Nadal and Federer was also an epic final. But, Federer needs to win next year also to beat Borg's record of five successive titles, he needs to enter the final of 2009 also to beat Borg's record (of playing six consectuive Wimbledon finals). Maybe Fed will do what the incomparable Pete Sampras could not because of that solitary aberration in 1996 when he uncharacteristically lost to Richard Krajicek in the quarter finals who went on to win the title.
