In an EPL match, the referee is trying to manage 22 millionares. The pressure on each player to perform is immense. When his career is threatened he might do things he would not normally do.
I think it is time FIFA changed the rules and used two referees (on the field) to manage the top quality matches - like in hockey or basketball.
Another change that can be adopted from ice hockey is to have a "sin bin". For minor infringements a player will have to sit out of the match for 5, 10 or 15 minutes depending on the decision of the referee. The yellow and red cards need be used only for genuine fouls.
Meanwhile let us be sympathetic to the referees, after all they don't have access to several cameras angles or slo-mo replays.
