hi trikarn. No they are two different things. Guwahati was the host of the 33rd national games and carried on succesffully without incident inspite of the ULFA threats in February. As for the Asian games, if India had won the bid Delhi would have been the host in 2014 after hosting the commonwealth games in 2011

The following article exposes the economic benefits fallacy of hosting such huge public games as Asian Games, Olympics, etc. Theory and reality show benefits simply do not exist.

From the article: "Cities who host the Olympic Games (or Asian Games) must commit to significant investments in sports venues and other infrastructure. It is commonly assumed that the scale of such and event and the scale of the preparation for it will create large and lasting economic benefits to the host city. Economic impact studies confirm these expectations by forecasting economic benefits in the billions of dollars. Unfortunately these studies are filled with misapplications of economic theory that virtually guarantee their projections will be large. Ex-post studies have consistently found no evidence of positive economic impacts from mega-sporting events even remotely approaching the estimates in economic impact studies."

Read the comment posted by Gopal Krishna above. When you make such tall claims - more than 5000 crores - substatiate it with some reason. Such silly comments to support your political views doesnt even deserver a reply. India can do far better things with such a huge money. Finally Mr. Ayyar looks like a senseible politician.

Mr Aiyar goes again with his stupid comments. Does he not know how much tourist inflows , foreign exchange, employment opportunities etc, such events bring. The spin offs from such functions far exceed the initial expenditure.
Weel done Mani, you are a true politician ignoring long term benefit for short term results

Irresponsible Aiyar

Both Kalamdi and Aiyar are politicians without any sense. Why than host the Commonwealth Games also? withdraw from it. Aiyar has that typical south indian ego. To top all this now he wants to be a foreign minister. Maharashtra's people will never forgive him for what he said on Savakar. Now I feel that no true sports loving person in the country will ever forgive him.He has no respect for countrymen. No wonder why our country is behind in sports and leaders in corruption, scam and a new one - human traffiking.

Indian sports.
by df on Apr 22, 2007 06:04 PM

I am no expert on sports I am just another Indian who would love to see India shining in sports. I got a chance to stay in Australia for few months and I was surprised to see the respect and money that is given towards all the sports here. Even if you want to do skating, you will given full assitance from the society and the government. I am sorry if it hurts someone but I think Australian cricket team is much better than the Indian team and still I did not see any Australian cricketer endorsing products like they do in India. The only cricketer I saw in Ad was Mark Taylor (old player) doing an Ad for fujitsu Air conditioner. Thats the only one I saw. Australians excel in swimming, tennis, cricket, rugby, hockey and many more games...This is because there is no one sport that overshadows other sports. Sportsmen are sportsmen not Gods...Game is a Game not religion...

This minister is an idiot.
by V Singh on Apr 22, 2007 06:00 PM

He is known for shooting his mouth.

Instead of saving 5000 crore we lost out an opportunity to bring huge amount of tourists into the country who could have provided impetus to economy.

Also imagine the infrastructure that could have developed because of all this ?

Our ministers and netas (both BJP and congress) are only interested in uplifting the poor by keeping them poor so that they need upliftment for the next 1000 years .

"garibi hatao " does not work when you give freebies to poor people. it works only when there is an investment in growth.

There is no point in India wasting money on such events, they don't create lasting economic benefit . The argument for sports infrastructure falls flat if you look around on how the facilities constructed for national games decays once the games circus is over. Even in cities like Bangalore, the stadiums are used more for poultry shows, dog exhibitions, etc than for sporting events. For as long as we don't have a sporting culture, there is no point losing sleep over such games. When even developed countries struggle with the economic hole these games leave behind, why should India get dragged into the mess? Just to satisfy some ego?

sporting culture can come if there is impetus to sport. Stadiums are decaying because they are still an elitist babu dom that control them.

you develop parks and stadiums and throw them open to the public then sporting culture will come.

Oh yeah, i have seen the enthusiasm of people when it comes to using these stadiums. They come armed with bats and wickets - what will happen to the expensive tracks? Creating huge stadiums is not going to create a sporting culture!
