Individual Games
by Prashant on May 27, 2005 10:22 PM

I think younger generation are taking to individual sports more than team games. Even though basketball is considered a team game it is still the individual who hogs the limelight. Except football I think younger people prefer to get more limelight which they get in individual sports like tennis etc...

shriram
you are absolutely spot on

i am very much happy to see someone bring out such facts .

the only solution to get it back on track is to avoid corruption and capital investment factors and faster progress of the ICC on several issues and more implementation of technology in the game.

i am one of the kinds of "audience who are surveyed by CA " and from the past two yrs i switched from cricket to EPL,UEFA champions league and tennis(any match containing stars(top 5)).i felt sorry for myself that i am not following cricket compared to the previous yrs.

there must be two divisions

first division, second division teams(intermediate),third division teams.

where second division teams get one chance in the whole yr to play with the top teams.(only once)

the relegated teams will be in the proper division accordingly as per the ICC points or some other format and third division teams will get promoted to proper divisions

i think this type of format should work out and as soon as possible twenty-twenty cricket should be implemented globally so that cricket gets back it's lost glory since nowadays people as observed are getting bored of the 100 over matches(not me though ).

Cricket is a RELIGION
by Shiv on May 27, 2005 09:47 PM

I can only say that while cricket may not be pouplar all over the world, no other sport capture the imagination of Indians as much as this game. It is and will remain a religion, a passion, a celebration. It may be weak in popularity in some countries (like WI)but is going strong (and I mean real strong ) in Aus, SA, NZ, Eng (the British love cricket - they will NEVER give it up), SL, PAK.

I think this article was written just to provoke lazy bums like me to just get up and debunk the stupid theory.

On cricket,s waning influence
by reghu on May 27, 2005 09:21 PM

I dont think tht the story is entirely true, partiuclarly with popularity increasing in India ,pakistan and Srilanka, who by the way are shaping the way the modern game is played.Europe and the U S and rest of the world anyway have not cared about the game and to say that the popularity is diminishing in those parts seems inaccurate.Probably in England it seems that football if finding an incraseing fan base and satellite television sure has been a large contibutor. The reason for the poor standard of the game I think is due to the fall in playing standards of Once Giants like West Indies and England. As regards tennis,do people still watch it,I think the days of tennis are over after the times of Borg,Mcenroe,Sampras, Agassi, Navratilova and
Steffi...

Very much true
by Manuel Vaz on May 27, 2005 09:11 PM

How true! With Australia dominating the sports for more than a decade and no other nation coming even close to match them, it is hardly surprising that cricket lovers are switching to other sports like tennis, football, etc.

Also, the once indomitable West Indies have slumped to such a low that doubts are already cast whether cricket will survive this island nation in the near future.

In India, a cricket crazy nation, the scene is no different. With the national team dishing out insipid performances, spectators are favouring other sports over cricket. And with stars like Narain Karthikeyan, Vishwanathan Anand, Sania Mirza keeping the Indian flag flying high, the future of cricket in India also looks bleak.

Time to look at things positively
by Shiva on May 27, 2005 08:23 PM

Dear Rediff,
I do wish that instead of thinking negatively its time to work for somethings. But it is good to have the other thought too. Hailing from India, and being brought up in US I try my every bit to encourage the sport in this non cricketing nation. I have also contacted our newspapers to cover our efforts in US but they have simply ignored. I dont know of a single headline which showcased USXI visiting hyderabad to learn cricket. But as a member of the team I do remember people saying that we dont match the competetion. I totally agree on that but then if we were cricketing heros we would have been in Indian national team. The attitude of our team was to promote the game but then the perception of the people and press was we were an average team. Imagine if the teams like Zimababwe, Kenya quit their process of cricket?? You dont want cricket to be played in India, Australia and England so that you get to see some good games.
Correct me if I'm wrong, there are about 5 to 10 teams in the english premier league that have not made to the play offs since their inception?
The gist of my case is to have an article about our efforts so that it encourages us and others.
