Mistakes in your descriptions

1) Maradona was never a forward, as you suggest. He was a midfielder who played center-forward.

2) Franz Backebauer is not the only player to win the world cup as both player and coach. Mario Zagallo of Brazil did it too.

3) Johann Cruyff did not invent "Total Football". Holland's coach Rinus Michel, and earlier coach Vic Buckingham were responsible for Total Football.

Zinedine Zidane is the best of all
by Hariharan S. on Apr 17, 2004 12:58 PM

Zidane is the best footballer I have seen (in the last twenty years).

His sense of "football space", impossible angles, timing of passes, big match scoring opportunities is unmatched. Add to these, his sublime dribbling skills and bag of tricks. And of course in the world of hype and cockiness, is there any footballer who is more elegant, down-to-earth and soft-spoken?

Zizou is the Pete Sampras of football!

Maradona, undisputed
by Arvind Iyengar on Apr 12, 2004 01:25 PM

Pele had the support of a great team and moreover, if one noticed, Pele's co-ordination with each of his team mates and excellent finishes as a forward, earned him the glory. On the other hand, Maradona was more of a one man army as far as Argentina was concerned. In terms of sheer beauty and style of the game, Maradona scores clearly over Pele.

now in the era of tough football zidane seems to me the most noiseless, silky and sublime player. you cannot understand the way he lords unless you take him off. whether it is real madrid or france he is the galacticos supreme. my best footballer ever.

why dosent anyone pay attention to defenders
by varun on Apr 08, 2004 11:42 PM

Its great that a lot of people are actually following football,i didnt think there would be too many. But one thing that I noticed after going through the poll is that people only vote for attackers or forwards. Its like football is just about Maradonna and Pele.Sure they were great but how come no one ever thinks of defenders or keepers. It was sad to see that while Pele and co. had more than 70% of the vote, greats playing behind the half line like Maldini and Banks have either 1% or 0%.I think the only defender in the list was Maldini(and Beckenbauer if u count him as a defender). It's really sad that while people go gaga over forwards, nobody appreciates the amazing skills and play of the defence.

Zidane is the greatest
by aviram on Apr 08, 2004 10:46 PM

A striker can never be 'the' greatest player. It has to be a playmaker and i think zidane is the greatest player of all time. A man who hardly has to run in football! Can just walk through defences and can provide such tearing passes that players who score(Ronaldo) from them get to be known as one of the greatest players!
Zizou Rulez!
