Training in China
by Govindan on Sep 01, 2004 12:29 AM

There is no point in wasting more public money in the name of training.Better way is to request olympic association to request for aluminium, stainless steel etc as long as our representatives there changes their mind set.

Need more facilities and modern scientific methods
by Sriram on Sep 01, 2004 12:28 AM

Need more facilities and modern training methodologies need to be incorporated. We all will forget about this Olympics in the next 2 months and will be started talking about Beijing in 2008. Between now and 2008 nothing will be done to improve our chances. We need our Indian Olympic Association Chairman should resign and some one with new ideas and moreover should implement the ideas to improve our chances.
If I am not wrong, I heard from the news that out of 400 crores allocated for sports 240 crores were distributed as salary to the employees. i.e. For every officer they provided a driver, peon, Personal Assistant/Secretary, Petrol, Quartres for the Officer, Peon, Secretary. Holy Cow!!! Now they don't have money to get a decent SHOE for an athelete. This entire Sports Authority of India has to be revamped.

As PT Usha said, if we start thinking about 2012 or 2016, pobably in 2020 we can think of getting some medals.

Indian Athelete
by Raj Prasad on Sep 01, 2004 12:21 AM

Why waste money on training our atheletes, let us import some talented athlete from other countries, namely China, Korea, and Kenya. We may also import diner sperms from past and present athletes, scientist, racecar drivers, cricketers, and any other tablet we do not have. I am sure we will find enough women to have and raise these children. Then we can win some medals.

I think its high time our officials & Netajis start concentrating on developing sports in the country rather than going on trips abroad every time the Olympics are held ... Mr Kalmadi & co just go to every sporting event as if they are there for helping India get medals , but they just enjoy and have fun . I think its time for someone like PT Usha to be the President of IOC. I think other sports in India should take a leaf out of the books of cricket in terms of administration of the game.

Ties!
by John on Aug 31, 2004 11:18 PM

2016 is 12 years away. By then, you can pretty much forget all the current talent as they will be old.

I think training with China is a good idea not just to win more medals but politically. If China can help us win more medals or atleast make us perform better in all the events than we did now, that would foster more friendly ties and mutual confidence.

Sports Culture
by samarsena on Aug 31, 2004 10:59 PM

Though most comments on the rediff boards including P.T.Usha's, blame blameable things for the debacle at the Olympics, none has blamed the most blameable. 1) India being a Cricket crazy country doesn't bother about other sports: What about Australia?-Cricket and Rugby being its number one and two sports. 2) India is a poor country and doesn't spend enough money on sports infrastructure and on Athletes?: What about some poorer, smaller African countries. They win few medals regularly.
The most blameable thing is the SPORTS CULTURE, which we are lacking. Most of the Australians on week ends go for Rugby, Swimming, Football etc. In Britain, even middle aged people play Hockey and Football at the weekends. This is because the Sports Culture in these countries is very strong. By the way what most Indians do at their free time? (Here I am not talking about the vast population who are below poverty line, but the middle class, higher middle class, and the rich class).
Strong SPORTS CULTURE backed by good infrastructure can only bring medals. This is the responsibility of the whole society-not government's alone.

olymphics and our great sportsmen
by narasimha on Aug 31, 2004 10:37 PM

Dear Sir,

What a great shame! Our great politicians should feel sorry of the state of affairs of our sportsman. The Great Chiana really it is great. We are also overpopulated they are also over populated. They exceed the world it is really great. At least now our great leaders should think of our nation should think of our young talented childern. We are great in politics, our youngsters are crazy of cinema heros and heroins they like to spend for gossips or watching TV and wasting their valuble time instead of concentrate on sports. The corporate colleges and the Cable TV's are wasting the valuble time of our yongsters. Fortunately we got great President and and a Great PrimeMinister who are having a vision at least to think of the fate of our talented players.
