We know where we stand today, but are our plans for future ?
by HSS on Aug 27, 2004 03:19 PM

It is high time that the Indian Olympic association, know the place where they stand in the world according to medal tally and the confidence level our players had in the events they had participated in Olympics. It is a shame that we were not able to cross the first level of heats to qualify for the finals. India being the populated country in the world along with China has to learn from them we only got one silver medal whereas on the other hand China stand at second place with 25 Gold after USA.

Moreover like we have been encouraging Cricket and Hockey, we should also encourage other sports with same level. It is high time that the sponsors should come forward; otherwise the Indians should stop watching Cricket and stop using the products which are advertised by the Cricket players. We brought cricket to such a place that we forgot about other sports which should also be encouraged equally.

Some of the suggestions would be to encourage the new generation to come forward and Similarly have talent search from across India and get them trained for future Olympics in such a way that they compete with Olympics timings not your Indian timings and use the latest Technolgy.

Advantage Americans?
by Emil on Aug 27, 2004 02:43 PM  | Hide replies

I don't quite understand how timing the events with prime time viewing in the US gives an advantage to US athletes.

I believe it has all to do with money and nothing else. Timing of events in this commercial age is always going to be based on when it is most profitable for the organisers.

For instance when there is a cricket tournament, it will always be timed with India's viewership as that is when the organisers can get the most advertising and sponsorship money.

When are cricket match timings changed to suit Indian viewership? We get up at all odds hours to watch matches in Australia and the West Indies! Don't talk through your hat.

Well this msg is not about usha colum but more on the prospect of future medals. To me it seems the best way to go forward for medals should be to focus it on the armed forces, puting stress on shooting, wrestling etc.

Anju George
by Raj on Aug 27, 2004 12:53 PM

PT Usha's column is her opinion, like it or not. Also, if she is expecting a good performance from Anju George, well, so should we. After all she is a world class performer, and has proven herself...probably more than the pessimistic bunch criticising Usha's optimism. Whatever the result, Anju George is a hero for India. If any of the 'run-her-downs' feel they are better, please stand up!!

Anju : will she do it?
by Viswanath on Aug 27, 2004 11:57 AM

Dear Usha

Your article on Anju was good, and few years before people would have said, that after usha, its the end of the road.

The way Anju finished was really good and it was a cool and composed effort, and no signs of panicking or exertion. My mind tells me that she will pick any of the medals.

I wish Anju the very best!

With best wishes
R.Viswanath
