Anju Hats off to you!
by Anil on Aug 28, 2004 03:44 PM

I saw some of the comments given by the fellow indians, who by themselves have nothing to prove. "So What..(one of the comments)" is not what India wants. So I will do it is what India wants. Useless comments will not bring medals, only people who are brave like Anju, who take pride in what they are doing can bring medals. Do not forget she is the first and the only Indian to get a world championship medal. She has tried her best. Infact this time the indian contingent in athletics have brought some pride. Foolish cricket mad crowd can only talk and cannot cannot make India proud. With all the bureaucracy of indian officials who just want to enjoy foreign trips by using the tax payers money will not bring india any honour. People like Anju who face the world with determination will. Hope there are some honest indians out their appriciate what she has achieved. "ANJU you have made us proud". I even want to congratulate 4 x400 women's relay team for a creditable effort. Hope down the line 10 years we would have athletes who will emerge to bring India on the sports map.

Thanks and best wishes to Anju George
by Manish on Aug 28, 2004 01:36 PM

To Anju George and her supportive husband,

Congrats, coming sixth in a such feirce competence is not all a defeat as others might think. You created National record at an olympic stage. I am satisfied with your performance. Please compare your entire career the leap you zoomed has surpassed the national record which was again set by you. Please accept my best wishes for your bright future, may be you have bleak chance in next olympics but please don't ever regret. I wish you become role model for others both men and women. Unlike few other celebrities I don't want you to turn arrogant egostic or have a feeling that "I am above ordinary". I have read lot of your interviews you seemed to be unassuming simple women. Best wishes for you and your family. Also to your supporting husband, who has clearly set an new dimension for men to support their wives to excel in her role.

Rediff staff - Is there any way , you can forward this message to her please?

Thanks,
Manish.

we r proud of u anju
by vaneet on Aug 28, 2004 11:08 AM

well we all must be proud of anju, she had failed to get us a medal but then the sheer effort she put for the event eclipsed the medal dissapointment, despite being in a gloomy indian camp she remain focous and gave her best, she is among a rare breed of athletes in india who should be ideal for people like malleshwari and other lifter's and shooter who really cry hard for rajiv gandhi khel ratan award and lack of facilities but then failed to deliver anything and then they talk about rethinking there carrears, yeah i m talking about Ms Bhagwat, well anju, we need medal from you in bejing, and we know you can do it

now for next 20 yrs we will keep saying Anju bobby missed a gold medal by just 24 cms & bronze medal by 12 cms.

she was a probable medal winner but she came 6th & we call it a creditable effort..

Good Work!!!

Despite not winning a medal, Anju still managed to make India proud. Medal is not everything but effort definitely matters. Unlike Indian hockey team and others in the Indian hockey contingent. She did well to give a stiff competition to athletes like Marion Jones.

Friend,

Not a nice comment. Being amongst one in the top three is the only WIN? Please look at the other angle, she came sixth in the world. In fact she was once third in 2003 (don't go by the medal please).

How many sportsmen reached the finals in athletics from India? That too first time in the long jump. Do you know the kind of training or budget allocated in the countries like Russia? Do you know that in the 80-90s some of the east germany women athletes gained masculinity features because of the training given to them by then the communist government. Do you know at what age they start entering sports. Do you know how much they spend on "special food" for the athletes?

Anyway, I dislike professional sports but not the sportsmen though.. Wish the government stop supporting or participating in the sport events.. Whats that we are gaining out of it anyway? what amount of physical exercise or games are young children receiving in rural or urban areas in India?

Is my second paragraph ironical to the first? No, I don't want to discourage sportsmen who already took it as a career.

Thanks
Manish

Congratulations Anju
by Anita on Aug 28, 2004 05:16 AM  | Hide replies

I would like to congratulate Anju heartily for her performance in the Olympics 2004. Reaching that level was only possible due to her determination and strength. It is a great feat considering the lack of facilities and infrastructure Indian athletes face. I think the Indian govt should look up to the chinese model and really do something about sports. Also, the govt have to rise above politics ( like changing hockey coach in the last month!!, and including Malleswari by default!). I think the interest of the Army in sports is great ( result: Rathore). Congratulations to all the India athletes who fought so hard under the given circumstances.
