Indian Performance at Olympics
by cool guy on Aug 22, 2004 04:58 PM  | Hide replies

What a shame!! A country of 1+ billion people cannot produce talented sportspersons who can bring glory to their country? Look at China how fruitfully r they utilising the huge population. how r tiny countries performing so well. This clearly proves that there is a clear void which needs to be filled up. . first n foremost the corruption invloved has to be wiped off..a systematic and organised training should be given to the talented bright stars. Its high time the people and the government should realise this naked fact.

Doping in sports
by Sivakumaran Raman on Aug 21, 2004 08:07 PM

Doping is now an integral part of sports like weightlifting and athletics. Everyone is doing it and some get caught. The whole thing is such a farce that the Olympic Federation should seriously consider legalizing drugs in sports. Also, we should stop criticizing our sportspersons for doping. They are being condemned just because they were caught while sportspersons from countries like China avoid detection with the help of state-sponsored, scientifically designed doping programs. The Indian government should consider starting scientific programs on doping.

Shame, Real shame, Revamp the entire selection procedure
by Sameer on Aug 21, 2004 12:46 AM

The fact that such a tainted person got to Athens and that there was a hand involved, is really shameful.
This shows the selection procedure's flaws, the real talent is neglected/rejected and corruption and favourism take eminence.
With exception of Rathore (Individual performance) and maybe Paes-Bhupati (Will they?) we cant say about any body, its impossible that our country cannot produce atleast one gold medal producing person, no ... but our selection procedure is so rotten and corrupt, not just at the national level but even at district levels!
Hence we need to go to the roots and solve it.
As for such tainted people, they should be publicly blacklisted.
And some body in this forum said our people return empty handed, who said do? they come back with TVs, Music systems, electronic gadgets etc. and we find more 'officials' than sportsmen....well, not just them even their families...

Lets do a reality check!
by Vinatha on Aug 20, 2004 07:57 AM

It is highly preposterous that athletes are resorting to performance enhancers in this fashion. Before we condemn them however, we need to ascertain whether these drugs were taken in ignorance for harmless reasons and lead to their eventual downfall, or whether the athletes were aware that these were banned substances.
Whatever the reason, Indian sports has borne the brunt of it. We hardly have sports persons of calibre who qualify and those few who do, end up screwing their own chances and that of the nation.
Indian sports needs a facelift and it has to begin immediately...not close to the next olympics. Alas!

Although this is sad, I believe this is more rampant than is made out to be. And why are only Asians or Bulgarians/Hungarians/Russians/Africans being checked? Don't Americans take drugs? I cannot believe that.

Drugs
by G Mookerjee on Aug 20, 2004 06:41 AM

Should we not call it a day at the Olympics? We are simply not good enough. Our athletes resort to drugs to
show their performance. Our sportsmen are not fit enough. Our huge delegation of officials are irresponsible and unaccountable.Except for one Rathore here and there,we will bring back nothing except bad name.It is a shame for which the officials and administrators are largely responsible.

I am ashamed by these findings
by antara on Aug 20, 2004 02:10 AM

Its disgusting not because we have not won but cause we are found to be using banned substances for the events.

I feel these people who go there are ambassadors of our country and should be held seriously accountable for such acts. They go there not just as individuals but as Indians and then to be doing such things its shameful.

They come on taxpayers hard earned money and should have some answers to give the people of India. Hopefully the sports authorities responsible for organising such contigents will take a hard look at what is going wrong.

What a shame !!
by Tushar on Aug 20, 2004 01:39 AM

What a shame our atletes found positive in the drug test. On one side, Rajyawardhansingh made all of us proud, but no it seems that happiness is not in our destiny. Now, I feel that we are not going to win any new medal. Hockey is hopeless, In tennis also Mahesh and Paes crashed out of the race for Gold, maximum they can do is to win bronze. All eyes are now on Anju George. All the best to her.

Very indifferent.
by Sil on Aug 20, 2004 01:19 AM

It is cetainly quite disgraceful that Indian women in Olympics show positive results for drug testing. It is quite extraordinary that when Indian women struggle so hard to achieve success in whatever field they strive in....especially sports, there is so much controversy surrounding them. May such incidents decrease in the future or there might be a new adjective hanging behind the Indian women in Olympics. The Indian women in Olympics who were tested positive seem to be very indifferent toward their team and country. And maybe the authorities should take more painful efforts toward preventing such mishaps occur again.
