Well, scientific temper is not something that is really valued or propagated in our educational system. Rational scientific reasoning is becoming more of a casualty under the current dispensation ruling the country where all kinds of unscientific irrational reasoning is being deliberately imposed on the less educated gullible sections of our society to justify 'puranic mythical' discoveries (?) as gospel truths to highlight India's supposed great scientific 'Hindulogical' past. Let science remain in the realm of science only without sinister attempts at redefining its conquests to better shape the planet earth. Science is the unending quest of knowledge where we are constantly seeking to unearth whatever that remains shrouded in mystery. Demystifying the mysterious is what is science & this quest goes on unabated.

Really wonderful description given below. But it is true that India was very much advanced scientifically even thousand of years back. Our ancient Books like Ramayana and Mahabharat are its proof as they have mentioned some unbelieveable events which people cannt think of some hundred years back. Pushpak Viman, Agni vaan, Shabdabhedi vaan, Lakshman Rekha, Ram Sethu , our Jyotish shastra describing in detail the exact time of all the planets, Charak Samhita describing the medicines for all deseases, Ayurveda shastra describing the medicinal properties of each and every plant, roots, seeds , flowers [ unbelivably must be having wonderful laboratory at that time ] . We have neglected our own vast knowledge, traditions , all this and looked to west and adopted their culture.

It is indeed true that our ancients developed astronomy to a high degree. The tragedy was that the science got linked to the pseudoscience astrology. As far as weaponry and other war paraphernalia is concerned imagination is more in action than facts. All ancient civilisations, not Indians alone, built up fantastic myths which may entertain us but should not influence current thinking.

Scientists no longer say Darwin's "theory" because it is a proven fact, not speculation. The study of evolution which started with fossils now makes use of geology,molecular biology, mathematics, genetics, statistics and computer modelling. Over the last 200 years sceptics of all hues (religious leaders, creationists, believers of intelligent design) were brought around to what Darwin and Wallace had established. The realisation of truth would have come much earlier but for the reluctance of people to believe that humans have evolved from lesser organisms. Please read Richard Dawkins' book "The greatest show on earth" for a comprehensive account.
