This is one of those few times when I disagree with Aakar Patel.
Right to life, with dignity, is our fundamental right. And pollution does encroach of that right. SC is completely within it's right to intervene.
As far as ""one day in Delhi"" argument is concerned, well it's a beginning. Also, Diwali is not just one day. During Diwali week pollution levels skyrocket in Delhi to several times and it's sensible to start with Diwali. Because it's a drop in the ocean we should not do anything is, to me, not just a lazy argument but also nonsensical.

If Aakar is concerned about pollution level in Ankleshwar, he should approach SC to bet relief. Because nothing is being done in Ankleshwar and hence nothing should be done in Delhi (although I don't think this is what Aakar implied) is illogical.

Also, i'm a strong proponent of banning loundspeakers for religious and cultural festivals, which causes noise pollution, especially at 5 AM in the morning.

Correct. Shitting down petroleum industry and banking car sales and making driving an automobile (as it is against fundamental rights of living) should be the next logical steps.

sulphur di oxide, which is a toxic gas generated during cracker explosion,is around 2:1 ratio.. ie. for every 1 gm sulphur, 2 gms sulphur di oxide.
Pollution is of course a big challenge for us and need to be addressed immediately and in manner which eradicate / or curb the root cause of it. Rightly said these short term measures are not going to do anything besides hurting the sentiments and livelihood of affected class. Over the last 7 years not even a single bus has been added to DTC fleet thereby increasing the dependency on private transport rather than public transport. No green area which traditional and deshi trees which purifies the area has been added rather the stress is on planting trees which only beautifies and also has lesser or nominal air purification capacity. Similar is the case of whole NCR region. And in the name of curbing air pollution window dressing by banning cracker, adopting odd even policies are experimented.
The article is in poor taste and it clearly does not respect but questions the wisdom of highest court of land. The article starts by pointing our some other sources of pollution. But has court permitted such things ? Why did not the author take the concerned parties to court ? Or what did he do to attract public attention to this blatant abuse of environment are some of the questions he must answer ? In fact on a broader level every one of us should as what we have done to prevent abuse of environment on a personal level and am sure majority will agree that they have done nothing. Author should know that in India, Delhi is among the worst polluted cities. There could be many in the line but let there be some beginning and we must support this wholeheartedly. Author raises question of goat and question the court. But one must not forget that court in such case follow the law and the law against cow slaughter is passed by parliament and not court. Problem of pollution and climate change are larger issues, yes and already many countries are moving in that direction. Already China has set in process the banning of petrol and diesel cars and many european countries are taking steps in that direction. People are getting more aware of such things now as effects of climate change are becoming more visible now in the form of inpredictable rains, storms, famines, rise in diseases related to lungs and overall degradation of health. Hence we must welcome every such step.

Well said. An immediate ban on sale of petrol and automobiles is a must. I agree surf you.

Deep Avali means the festival of light. Meaning drive away all your ignorance by the light of knowledge. We Indians have a peculiar habit of misunderstanding everything and start busting crackers, which are full of harmful chemicals. We have to clean all our rivers.lakes, ponds & air. Even the land has to get rid of all the chemicals. Crackers are certainly not a part of the festival.
Not everything about crackers is bad. During deepavali children i.enjoy ii.celebrate iii.learn courage and caution
Better cracker management is possible by regulating the type of crackers and cautioning people. Parents should be with children during cracker activities.
Why composite pollution improvement not looked into? AIR WATER SPACE EARTH etc Which polluted by many ways sounds is making everybody crazy and irritated to a level that they become intolerant.WHY NOT TO CONTROL SOUND POLLUTION?
Dear All, Our Country is rather a continent and why every important institution to be located in New Delhi like UN which has its International Court in Hague not in NEW YORK why we cant move our Supreme court to another place wherein its energies concentrate on all India rather than New Delhi the capital city and in my opinion Nagpur has got all the building and space for same and accessible to all Indians equally because of Rail/Airport connectivity and will give Supreme Court more perspective of Indian plethora rather than concentrating all its focus on Capital city.
I live in delhi it does increase pollution--There are many other ways of celebrating the auspicious day--meet greet exchange sweet do pooja---enjoy with family n friends--why to make it controversial--

sweets! did I hear? bad for health... too much sugar... adulterated khoya... Instead we should only buy Chocolates prepared by MNCs. They are the only safe stuff. Ha Ha Ha
Courts should not encroach in to the domain of the elected Government. Cracker management and environment are clearly the jurisdiction of Government. Court should have left the issue to the Government to take a call.
On a number of issues which are administrative, Courts are interfering. What will regulate the courts.
But for poor Government, there are Courts, Parliament, Opposition and above all 'people' to regulate.
