They see some faults in society and point them out. Nothing to do with the soviet era. The way to deal with them is debate and discussion, not prosecution and death threats.
This scholar has mouthed all these statements with a view to pushing the sales of his book. Am yet to discover who labelled him a scholar or on what basis. Only pedestrian views have been expressed in this article, no more!
I disagree with the statement: "A university is where you can think the unthinkable and say the unsayable. It is the one space in society where one can do that. There is a very deep danger if you start to interfere and dilute that principle." What if the slogans are 'anti-national' and are supportive of the 'separatists' who want the country divided? What if the participants eulogise 'criminals' who have been given death sentence by the highest court in the land, after a long trial? The Government should take action against these crooks, who are subsidised with government money, but raise slogans against the country. He does not mention the 'exclusion'/ or 'just mentioning' in history books of the glories of India's past in architecture, science, literature etc, of contributions of Chatrapathi Sivaji, the part played by lakhs of Indians during the freedom struggle (other than Gandhi, Nehru and a selected few), all due to the purposeful omission by British and then later by the left-leaning, so-called intellectuals who wrote (distorted) Indian history.

When left were writing the history, what you Right were doing? if you have any intellectual capacity, do something. Stop cry baby.
There's absolutely no such chance, maybe frustrated ones who were into things other than studies might come together and create ruckus otherwise this generation of students are for enjoying their lives and for getting a decent career
Today's youngsters are career oriented, they don't have time for leftists and ultra leftists, who has spoiled the lives of many brilliant students of 70^s and 80^s.You may get some idiots like Kanhaih who are roaming around for years in the universities doing research on some irrelevant subjects enjoying tax payers money, but this is only 2-3% of the student population.
"Interesting new ideas emerging" WHAT ARE THOSE? DID WE NOT EXPERIENCE MANY IDEAS WHICH HAVE RUINED THE AIR/WATER/FOOD AND CHARACTERS TOO? WE WANT OUR OWN CIVILISATION BACK! ALONGWITH MODERN DEVELOPMENTS TOO IF THOSE ARE HARMLESS!

student movements wont do good as students are taught by ill knowing teachers!
If at all he talks about student movement, first he should talk about Assam student agitation. Perhaps it did a Guinness record doing 5 year long movement against Indian Government. It was against of Bangladeshi foreign nationals in Assam. If he couldn’t find anyone form NE (as it is mentioned in the interview) than he must have written His-Story and not history.

He should also have said about the 1st students movement which is of AISF. Sahid Bhagat Singh and his comrades were the leaders of that student movement.

An Indian History without Sardar Patel, who did the very difficult task of uniting over 500 kingdoms and regions into the Indian republic, is not History at all but another 'his-tory' !
