Nice article espousing the virtues of tolerance, and expertly citing Gandhi and of course the ancient texts. And the author very worriedly ends saying whether India would follow the same tolerance!
But which tolerance is the author talking about here and why? This article reeks of "secular" politics that Indian's have been brain washed for the last 60 years.
I am really doubtful about the articles timing - BJP/Modi doing a successful Pravas Bhartiya Divas!
I am all the more disappointed that Rediff still continues to entertain such ideologies. May be its time people showed how intolerant we are about such people and ideologies. ENOUGH!

Gandhis tolerance to intolerance local converts who are now anti roots and nation caused nation in this after 68 yrs HIndus still have no nation yet, while converts have many mini pakistans in india and around iNdia.
During Swami Vivekananda's life time the orthodox priests opposed him strongly. Swamiji ended up calling the Namboodhari controlled Kerala as a 'mad house'. Swamiji had Kayastha background and hence saw through the social evil of caste system which made the orthodox priests stongly oppose swamiji. The BJP and RSS recently started adopting Gandhiji and Sardar Patel last year. They had similiary adopted Swami Vivekananda a few decaded ago, until then they were highly suspicious of Swamaji's teaching, especially during Swamiji's lifetime since they were unsure when can Swamaji point out the next social evil.

Swamiji was against social inequality and caste based barbarism and hence had to face heat from the orthodox preists. In fact the head of the Ramkrishna mission had filed a court case a few years ago saying their mission shouldn't be called a Hindu organization. One can google this fact - ramakrishna mission not hindu

The Bahujans of India need to be aware of the games of the delusional orthodox who have only given grief and negativity to our country. Indians should not be fooled by people who mix mythology with history and mythology with science. Swami Vivekananda never taught that Indians invented inter-planetery travel and surgery to replace an elephant's head on a human head, he was much more sophisticated than the delusional orthodox priests.

Swami Vivekananda observed that these orthodox brahmin priests were swindling the general public by performing meaningless and useless ceremonies and demanding lots of money.
Why should law on loudspeakers be different for anyone? Why should law of taxation be different for anyone? Why should one tolerate uncleanliness from others? Tolerance is a threshold and it has been violated due to votebank politics long time ago. Why should killing of innocent goats be tolerated by those not wanting to see bloodshed? What kind of tolerance are we talking about? Why should the citizens tolerate injustice?

The Indian Constitution needs a major amendment. Its outdated and is being exploited by politicians, thus the problems.
Tolerance for whom and tolerance for what? Don't expect me to be tolerant while stepping in my foot and taking away what is rightfully mine. Tolerance is for people who know th meaning and the benefits that arise out of it!
Majority religion need not be taught lessons on tolerance. Irrespective of many incidents of insults to majority culture, still the offenders are moving free (latest examples is PK). This is due to tolerance (or ignorance?) of Hindus. Any ways, it seems MK Gandhi was of the opinion that it is always majority who should be tolerant (keep silent) no matter whoever is offender. This is called pseudo-secularism practiced since Independence. Same applies to forward castes (particularly Brahmins) who are always expected to keep silent, no matter whoever hurts their sentiments.

The tolerance approach is being followed by the Narendra Modi government. This is a good principle to amalgamate all the SAARC nations under the banner of the Indian Union. Tolerance towards and opportunities for all will garner the people of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Srlanka, Burma, Bhutan and Nepal under the Indian Union. No other country in this list will be able to run a good democracy with top higher education, top businesses, and high military power; none in the list with the exception of India will be able to run an English speaking democracy with some law and order in the Washington and Westminster style poiltical combination.

Most educated Brahmins see the terrible injustices that the caste system brought with it . We( I am a Brahmin but I have renounced the caste system) oppressed the Sudras and the Dalits for centuries, for thousands of years ...and we continue to hurt the sentiments of all those who are not Brahmins. We need to totally drop the caste system if we wish to be a progressive nation.
