Conversion of ship container to toilets.
by narayanan vishwanathan on Jan 06, 2015 09:35 AM

Well done. Well said that MLAs and MPs in their constituencies can undertake this work using their development funds. How many MLAs and MPs would really would like to undertake this work. They always look for Road building contracts or contracts of such nature where they can swindle the whole allocation of development fund of their location. I feel such toilets can be installed by MLAs and MPs in their constituencies using their development funds? If PMs office is really serious, this can be implemented in right earnest and this would be right beginning for SWATCH BHARAT as declared by the PM.

Good work Mr. Suresh, this is not first time such toilets are fabricated, Delhi Admn has done it two decades back wich is mobile with bottom tank to hold waste, wcich can be discharged in sewer lines, this being mounted on tractor drawn trolley can be moved from one location to other most of the const. with locally avble materials. In Australia rural public conveniences are similar to Rly. toilet except they have to discharge wood chips which are in small chips which will decompose into earth, after few years, this compost is used as manure in forest nurseries, worth following in rural India, where water is shortage for flushing.

the toilets cost Rs 1.5 each ..its costlier than a rural house with 1 BHK .

But if ppl pay for its maintanance then it would be worth it.

or it can be built with gypsum board contruction which will cost less.

Can you see the commodes, wash basins, flush tanks, overhead tank, pipelines, showers, exhaust fans, Doors and Labour charges..

Try to see the positive angle bro.. The endeavor needs to be appreciated..

More such voluntary efforts by self-help groups transform India.. Not easy, but definitely NOT difficult..

Rs 700,000/- for 5 toilets! It is on the high side. They have already built a Community Hall in the village,I find. If only they had built the toilets under a lean-to roof from the Hall, it would have been much cheaper and equally durable.

Also, for a fraction of the money spent by this person, you can build a beautiful earth-friendly structure.

Public Toilte

Great to see movements are happening in pre-fab field. Unfortunately , I am truly surprised to see such a premium price for this set of 5 toilets. This is bad and should have been given enough thought before shelling 7 lakhs for these set of 5 toilets in a navy container which would be at the max available for not more than 3.5 to 4 lakhs for the cost of structure, unless there is some special technology involved here. Mr Menon , I am sure this is social service and no business involved here. Innovation at such a premium price is insane.

Simple yet great concept

Charity beguns at home. Not just charity but whole lot if values, chief among them `cleanliness'. Hats off to Suresh Menon for this simple remedy to a persistent Indian problem - sanitation. If only we could think and build more such ingenuous remedies, our nation can also become one of the cleaner places on earth.
While we hear sneers on what one person can do, Suresh has showed what one man can do. Much like Gandhiji, Kailash Satyarthi, Pele or Edison. Its a fitting tribute at the end of article "to start being the change that you wish to see in the world".
