Hats off Mrs.& Mr.Tapeshwar Ram ! the hardwork for 3 decades. I think such people require their share of Happy Days in their life time. Earlier, there wasnt a forum. But seriously if there is one..now.. where in i can contribute something to enhance his trip to Delhi, i would appreciate.

What you say is correct BUT do you see whats India? Govt which promised OROP is not prepared to listen OR much less answer when they will implement. If this is the kind of promises made by Govt to educated & Military people, imagine what these poor uneducated & unorganised rickshaw pullers will get? I can give Indian Govt daily $100 Trillion & dont ask anything in return. But pl dont ask me when I would start it.

I am prepared to pay for their Train TKT TO & FRO their Village to Delhi. Tell me where/whom to send (before India withdraws Money order facility also like Telegram) because they may not have a Bank Account. OR give the name of the Good Samaritan Doctor in Calcutta (who gives him free medicines) to who I can send the money. I am not a multi millionnaire and also can not give to every rickshaw puller but can give small amount to such people whose stories get published. This man Tapeshwaram Ram deserves much more.

If several people volunteer to give Tapeshwar Ram money, he can possibly share it among others who are in the same boat. Though wishful thinking

Vinod, I am not sure if you read the headlines: he sees his wife only twice or thrice a year!

What more can one ask, for happiness??

Hand-pulled Rickshaw and old Kolkata(Calcutta).
by anup roy on Aug 24, 2015 02:47 PM

The good days with various classes Kolkata had seen - before the days of cheap politics entered its body like termites - lured the poor, hardworking class that was ready to do so called menial jobs. There was a saying that nobody starves in 'Calcutta'. Those 'nobody' were the labourers in the jute-mills, forging shops, small machine shops, coolie, 'jhanka-mute', roadside cheap eatery help, dock-labours, rickshaw-pullers etc. Many 'red' leaders would say that they were exploited, may be they are correct; but people from Bihar and eastern UP and Orissa accepted it and made property in their villages, gave education to their children. They endured a very tough life in the city, but nurtured a dream to go back to their village at last and enjoy comfortable retired life, and they did it.
Compare them with uneducated lower middleclass poor babus like me - I would despise a menial job like rickshaw-pulling and I starved with my family in consequence, in the city where nobody starves.
The government when decided to remove all hand-pulling rickshaws from the road the rickshaw pullers were in distress; therefore it is being removed gradually from the streets of Kolkata.
There is no shame to do any job that pays adequately and sustains families!
I wonder, do we find the hand pulled rickshaws on Chinese roads these days.

Unbelievable figures
by Hari Rao on Aug 24, 2015 02:30 PM

A rickshaw puller in poverty ridden Kolkata earning Rs 5000 a month during 1980s sounds unbelievable. Even a class I government officer did not get that much then. The correspondent should the verify the figures before writing.

Whatever the figures, it is disgraceful for India to allow hand pulled rickshaws and such poverty. If only the government has the will, their plight can be improved. Just see the example of Tamilnadu and how prosperous the rickshaw puller community has become today.

Do you know that the latest boasting of India is "100 Smart Cities" by the Ministry of Urban Development AND what more the Minister of Urban Development himself announces that "they do not know the "definition of Smart City & do not know what it should have". Further, they have also allocated a budget of Rs.50,000 Crores without knowing what it will be. Dont you think we have a very smart Minister of Urban Development & equally Smart Ministry of Urban Development? What else will you expect in a Country where they Plan, Design, give Funds & also execute the Plan without knowing what they are doing. I have written to the PMO's Office since he is the who has announced the 100 Smart Cities but as usual my letter would not have seen the day light. Mera Bharat Mahan.
