English.
by GAUTAM MOOKERJEE on Jun 27, 2014 06:52 AM  | Hide replies

This topic has been on since the 50s When Nehru and Azad were around. It was their opinion that English will bind the country together till all the other languages develop.Otherwise the imposition of Hindi as the national language would simply break the country apart.Unfortunately as in everything else in this country right from poverty to infant mortality from illiteracy to lack of toilets, there has been little development in the regional languages that they can take the place of English. So there is no point in drawing comparison with the likes of Japan,Korea or Israel.

We are not a poor country but we are made poor by our policies. Our language policy is one example that needs to be fixed.

Will remain the language of science and technology all over the world. The Chinese now are fast catching up in English language education, while India wants to go backwards. Most Europeans speak and write impeccable English, that is how they communicate at International level. Japanese publish only in English journals. Who will read anything scientific published in Hindi? As it is, the level of English proficiency is dismal in India now, compared few years back, especially in North India.

None of these countries you mention are changing their primary medium to English.

Difference between learning English and changing the medium.

Even Europeans are all trying to learn English
to survive in this Globalised world. It is
better India tries to be a Global Citizen and
not fall back on narrow regional fanaticism.
Our passion for English is connected with work.

A doctor in India, in Singapore, in US,
in UK, in Canada, in Australia, in
New Zealand,
gives the same medicine for the same
disease in the same language. That is
very important in this Knowledge based
Economy. Same is true for IT and Engineering,
Sports and Finance. Accounting and Economics.

English is the savior
by on Jun 27, 2014 06:14 AM  | Hide replies

Without English, India will have no standing in
scientific innovations, engineering feats,
medical wonders, sports, Olympics, athletics.
Workable Hindi is learnt by all Indians because
of Bollywood, TV serials, Cricket etc. Mother
tongue and cultural diversity alongwith food,
clothing, rituals, religious functions can all
be conducted by regional languages. That's it.
We should encourage more regional movies with
English sub-titles and literary translations
to English. This will promote better culture.

We need more "Convergence" rather
than "Divergence". This can only
be done thru English as a language
both nationally as well as --
internationally. We can use a mix
of Sanskrit words in Indian English

Not a solution
by Ab J on Jun 27, 2014 06:09 AM

Yes other countries use their own language. But they use one single language. There is no country in the world that has 25 languages. Even China imposed Mandarin on its masses to get a global recognition. Forcing Indians to adapt to 25 languages will be a cruelty beyond imagination.

India is unique in that respect. So its solution is unique. If people have problem with Hindi, use English. I would prefer to use English than learn 25 useless languages. Anyway people use their native language at home, so there is no fear of cultural extermination

Good article

I am Telugu. I would like to encourage local languages too. I too hate the class system that looks down on people who dont know English. We need to educate more people and find the talents wherever they are. Because of the importance we give to English, lot of hidden talent never been exploited because they were not good with English and they could not succeed in the world which rewards only people who have good English skills.

Being said that, central govt, Supreme court should continue to use English. We can not make Hindi as the primary language of communication in Supreme court or in central govt, a move with which non-Hindi speaker will feel like second class citizens.

I am all for encouraging local languages in states. But English as link language between states and between states and Central govt should continue.

Hindi is a regional language
by Pure Dravidian on Jun 27, 2014 03:33 AM  | Hide replies

If Pakistan and Rapistan accept Hindi as their national language so be it. But why should all other Indians follow this? We have mature classical languages like Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam etc. Many of these languages are taught in all major universities of the world. Tamil is recognised as most ancient language in the world. People all over the world watch Kollywood films. All nobel prize winners hail from TN. Gandhi wished he was a Tamil because they were the main reason for Indian independence. Now Hindi people rape and murder people wherever they get a chance. Tamils again rescued India from plain Hindi barbarism and history revisionism. It's a matter of national respect towards Tamils to declare Tamil the first national language of India. Only later other languages should be added to the list. No Hindi.

Chidambaram admitted that South India could be a superpower if it was a seperate country. I don't know why South Indians don't wake up from their poisonous slumber. It'S evident that we need an India without Hindi, but with Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam to become a world superpower.

Did you even read the article?

The question is simple. Should a child in Tamil Nadu be able be a doctor studying in Tamil medium, just as they can in English medium? I believe they should.

Yes. you are right. All the resources the northern companies are looting from south from the centuries. I wish we had separate country for southerns. Northern people rapists, racists, jealous, dirty drunkens, the alltime cheaters, peace breakers, they are the people who puts the brothers to fight, they are the people who creates religious abuses, they are selfish, they try to dominate by looting the southerns, they break the regions and small states in south, and so many rewards can be given to them

I speak Dozen of Indian languages, Dozen of European languages, After my graduation for the first 3 years I struggled to get a job as Accounts or Admin Assistant. Since I did Telugu medium, They were asking all whether I did in English medium. English be a Global Language, now the southern people are more fluent in English and we are brilliant in our skills. Don't impose any particular language, let be the local languages or English Medium . In fact north Indian who shows much impression on western cults look like English schools, drinking, naked dresses except Rajastan or few areas.

Regarding my blog I am asking for Tamil & other translators. Please help in this.

Where do I advocate Hindi over non-Hindi speakers? I am advocating that a child in Tamil Nadu also be allowed to be a doctor in Tamil medium, just as they can also be in English medium. A child in Bengal should be able to be an engineer in Bengali medium. Countries a fraction of the size of these states do this.

Dude, I read your twitter feed. Your twitter messages are all about popularizing Hindi in non Hindi states. You very passionately get into twitter battles with others to prove that Hindi is already spread into the Southern states.

You may be under the impression that your machiavellian design to help supplant Hindi into non Hindi parts of India would remain undetected so long as you cover it under the shroud of technical education should be possible in all regional languages including Tamil and Malayalam etc.

This seemingly innocuous approach of yours is what makes your kind even more dangerous. Already many southing Indians have responded on this board appreciating your approach as against a blatant 'Impose Hindi on non-speakers' approach.

I, however, realized immediately that you are a con artist who is totally wedded to the approach to impose Hindi on the South and North East. So I dug further into your blog and then to your twitter messages and the reality was stark as day.

Your loyalties are exclusively toward Hindi, Hindiwallahs, and the imposition of Hindi on non Hindi regions of India. So stop pretending otherwise.
