pakistanis bring in a lot of fake indian notes in dubai where they exchange them with the indians doing hawala using the isi. this is huge undertaking. many congressis are involved in this and are vulnerable to isi pressures, compromising india's security.
I always keep a few thousand Rupiah with me when ever I leave India. This helps me to rent a taxi cab in case I cannot arrange a pickup at the airport on my next visit to India. Also, helps pay for snacks etc. during transit in India. Most snack shops don't accept credit cards or foreign exchange. And even if they do, they always hand back the change in Rupiah - what am I suppossed to do with the change?

Also, what if other countries implement similar laws? Then no traveller can carry money when travelling outside the country. Just because you cannot control counterfeiting, you now cause inconvenience to innocent people. Personally I beleive that the Indian government itself is a big counterfeiter. They print and cirulate the bank notes and distribute it through the reserve bank. And after the note has entered circulation they simply abandon it and declare it as fake. This way they get to spend the money without taking any liability. I personally have received Rs. 500 notes from SBI that looked 100% verifiable and yet figured as fake as per the serial number on the note as published by RBI. Several people have looked at it and unable to find any discrepancy. The watermark, raised braille sign, silver thread with Bharat RBI imprint everything checked out! This is a great way for the dishonest government to spend money and control inflation. What do you think?

Almost all Exchanges/Banks in the airports dont give the good rate prevailing. So NRIs r forced to shed foreign currency in return of INR at a loss and ultimately this is where Exchange centers/Banks makes huge profits. I agree with you the govt should allow atleast INR 2K-3K just for eating/taxis etc.

I completely agree that NRI's should not be forced to use exorbitant exchange rates at airports for food/taxi. However why even the Rs2-3000 limit. Say I bring $2000(ie Rs 1Lakh)for my India trip but end up using just half of the Rs1Lakh. Why should I be forced to exchange it back to $ and then exchange is back to Rs for next trip and end up paying conversion fees multiple times. If govt wants to check counterfiet currency they should make it a law for money changers(including banks that offer remitance facility) that any currency change reciept can be used to reconvert Rs to original currency without exchange fees and a reimbursement of exchange fees paid.
-That the limit is ONLY ON Indian currency. the statement in above article that - - NRIs can carry as much Omani rials or any foreign exchange they wish & then get it converted here - this way we get foreign exchange & curtail illicit rupees coming in. This rule should not harm NRIs, since they can carry the currency of the country they reside in - to the extent they can afford to. This foreign exchange can be converted into rupees here just by flashing your Passport & work permit etc.
Think logically - how come a person residing in forign country, earning in that currency can have so much of Indian currency with him? He can be having foreign exchange with him that he earned there.

Please learn how to exchange foreign currency in foreign airports...or step outside of house once in a while. This is just another way airport officials can get foreign currency for themselves..as bribe..
