The sentence was too light
by Jai Babu on May 23, 2012 01:35 PM  | Hide replies

He invaded a room mate's privacy and filmed his private moments. Whatever the room mate's sexua1 preferences be, Dharun Ravi had no business engaging in this voyeuristic task. And he has shown no remorse whatsoever. He needs to spend time in American jail with a a mean big brothaas prison gang giving him the TREATMENT!

Ravi should have been punished heavily
by Abhijit on May 23, 2012 12:07 PM  | Hide replies

To be gay or straight is one's choice. Others should respect it even if they don't like it.

Ravi did very ugly thing by spying and spreading the private life of his roommate.

Ravi might have got awarded in India for catching illegal things on camera. Govt and people might have made him a hero. But to respect privacy is law in US.

POI should not be supported by India
by Srinivas on May 23, 2012 11:05 AM  | Hide replies

People of Indian origin leave the country loving another nation and hating India. They go out for pleasure and money. They should never be supported by GOI/People of India

If you are outside India, do not expect Indian embassies to help you if you are in trouble. They help "influential" people. Apart from that Indian embassies are busy printing fake invoices and bogus receipts.

should learn!
by Chamarthi Srinivas on May 23, 2012 10:58 AM  | Hide replies

one should understand the sentiments of the people involved. Judge is remarkable in his words about the same, how ones actions effect the people and society around us should be taken into consideration. we have to train our kids in that direction rather becoming Drutarastra of the modern time protecting all the bad behaviour of our children!
love to hear Dharun got less sentence but my sympathy is with with Climentis.

My sympathy is with Dharun... If people commit suicide for every small thing ... then it is their problem...

Dharun's family is well connected with DMK. They will manage to get away with light sentence if the case goes to higher court.

Todays Children are Sensitive or Insensitive?
by Shashikumar on May 23, 2012 10:32 AM  | Hide replies

Today's Children are so sensitive they commit suicide for things like Teacher scolded in the class for not doing homework etc.

There are other kind of children who will kill the teacher if they ask them why they didn't do homework.

Who is right ? Who is wrong?

A wrong deed is always wrong - regardless of person's age! And a civil society would do well not to tolerate the same.

Cunning and Crooked
by asha on May 23, 2012 10:08 AM  | Hide replies

Ravi should have been given a minimum sentence of 5 years in jail. His behaviour of spying is cunning and crooked typical of Indian mentality. He is living in another place where the culture is different. He had been living there for many years and still haven't learned to respect the privacy of other people. His intention (black mailing)is totally unacceptable and he should have paid for it.

Thats so unfair. First of all his father himself admits that they are american. American schools and colleges are very discriminative. The system itself is like that. SO no point in blaming Ravi alone. And as far as clementis are concerned they have lost their son anyway which is a very sad thing. But why do they have to create the same kind of pain to Ravi's parents. Why cant they forgive him because even if he gets any punishment its not going to bring their son back.

About 50 Indian Amercians have been killed who came to study there, not one is punished. What is your comments on this ? Atleast this guy is punished somehow, but what about the dozens Indian Americans killed? where is the justice.

You would spit on the US and yet, people like you @ Heypal (I wonder who would be a pal to a low life like you) would not stop being frustrated at having been denied a Visa for the US and other low lives like you will go on complainig about the violence in the US and will still go on applying for, getting visas to the US and going there in droves.

BTW, you mischievous troll, in all criminal cases in the US, regardless of whether against Indians, or others, the perpetrators are sought out with vigour and prosecuted. In the 50 Indian Americans' cases also, most of the perpetrators would have been caught and prosecuted and in jail or getting ready to go to jail, and if in Texas, which incidentally is one of my favorite places after India, they would be getting ready for the chair. In some cases the criminals don't leave any clues and cannot be caught. After all the police are also people, they are not GOD. Even in India or any other country, sometimes some cases remain unsolved.

What Ravi did that was wrong, but as per NJ law, invasion of privacy is not a prison-term offence. He never should have been charged with any crimes.

To be frank 'Who really cares?'
It is surprising to see that Rediff is trying to project this guy as if he is some freedom fighter who is being convicted!!
So next what? Some novel by US based Indian author on this followed by a movie in hollywood & bollywood?
