thank you, ambassador Prakash ji

I am really disappointed in the posts i see here. The Indian people have been faulted by many american friends i have for being a show-off unappreciative kind. we live in technology world now, and it always helps to learn from one another's expereince. i have not known any indian ambassador being as people friendly as prakash ji who frequently writes on rediff. why can't we say thank you? i certainly like his articles.

Prem Mohan in the form of george. How is your Madamji? yes those nationals came to India, went to South Africa, South America and Africa and showed their power of destruction. Do you want Indians to learn only the language or their uncivilized plundering culture as well? I guess your Madamji has already did bring that culture. Con party had taken the plundering to a new level.

Learn atleast one foriegn language in school. NOT HINDI
by Jagdish Reddy on Mar 29, 2012 09:36 PM  | Hide replies

In addition to the mother tongue and English. It is time for Indians to learn at least one foreign language like Spanish, Portugeese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, Russian or German.
Most of South America speaks spanish. Brazil portugeese, most of North and west Africa speak French. In future you will be travelling and selling your stuff all over the world or even buying and travelling. It will come in handy.
I do not see a reason to learn Hindi. I could understand hindi movies better. Other than than, I do not see any other reason. Hindi is also based on Sancrit as most other Indian languages and you can easily get by with your broken Hindi and English, anywhere in India.

German is a pointless language. There is certainly more reason to learn Hindi than German

yeah its a good fix for frequent travellers.. but nothing beats knowing the host's local language during one to one communication..
it can be a game changer in business and dealings.. something which even the most perfect app will not achieve

Something has been lost in translation...
by Onie on Mar 29, 2012 08:40 PM

The general thesis is correct - language translation keeps on improving and we are already at the point where you can use translators to communicate in written form with something like 80-90% accuracy.

That said, WAP is about as obsolete as the Dodo and the world has moved on from GPRS. More importantly, neither have anything do with voice recognition or language translation.

The statement attributed to the MIT student is rather nonsensical yet I am pretty sure that an MIT guy is too smart to say that, so I can only imagine the honourable ambassador has taken some liberties in paraphrasing the MIT-ian's original statement.

Is this the calibre of our ambassadors?
by Nick Fauzier on Mar 29, 2012 03:11 PM  | Hide replies

There is more to language than just getting things done. As M wrote in an earlier comment its a way of integrating with another culture, but also exercising your own brain. Once technology can do all this and more the ambassador should just go to sleep for rest of his life and let mobile phones and gadgets do his work. I am sure at least in this case they will do a better job :)
